Malala Yousafzai, the educational campaigner from Swat Valley, Pakistan, came to public attention by writing for BBC Urdu about life under the Taliban. First of all, ten stars for Malala! Ten stars for her health, her stamina, her courage, and her brilliance!But truth be known this was a difficult book to read. I think it needed better editing. I kept getting lost in the timeline. For example, the way I read it, Malala was fourteen when she was shot. I knew that wasn't the case. Also, the first part of the book was so choppy that I almost gave up reading the book. I only continued because I wanted to learn about this fascinating teen.History has never been my favorite subject. It wasn't until a brilliant teacher in college did I begin paying attention. Let's face it, history is about men and their wars. Women are rarely the stars. So when a book about a female who is making history, gets bogged down in the wars, I started losing interest. When the war affects Malala and her family, then I felt involved again. Then I was glad for the bit of a history lesson that was set up in the book. Wish there had been a smoother way to move from personal story to the region's history.I hope, hope, hope that Malala writes more books. I hope she finds friends. I hope her mother can get on with her own education and can stand and give a few speeches of her own. I hope the family becomes more feminist so that mother can have her own life. I wish the family all the goodness life can give.

My 11-year old son read this and was so touched and inspired by Malala's story. He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

I checked the audiobook out from the library, forgetting that I had bought the ebook when it was on sale... because I'm that sort of person. As amused and annoyed as I was with myself when I realized this, I actually ended up getting a better experience with the book this way. Malala speaks at the beginning and end of the book, and there's her UN speech as well. So, the audio version is definitely worth listening to.It's pretty emotional, hearing about how so many children in Pakistan are unable to be educated because their poor and/or female. I think it was very important of her to point out that the biggest issue with the ignorance there is because of this lack of education. These people are studying their holy text, but aren't understanding the words. That's something to be said of all religions. It's scary what happens when the uneducated come into power and twist a holy book to their desires. And knowing she stood up for her education despite the threats, she is amazing. Truly.I introduced my 5 year old son to the story of Malala last year, we own a couple picture books about her. I wanted him to know how important it is for all people to be given the opportunity to be educated. Also, I want to raise him to understand that there is no type of person better than another - people of all races, religions, genders, etc. all deserve the same opportunities.To me, the worst part of this was knowing there was a period of time when her father regretted letting her choose an education over her safety. I cannot even imagine the grief her parents went through.I've been reading a lot of non fiction lately, and I've noticed there is a lot of rambling in them. This book didn't have that. It is a fascinating story and I am so glad she lived through being shot. I wish I could afford to go to her talk in Houston, I expect it is going to be great.

This book is an autobiography of Malala Yousafzai. She wrote about her experience in Pakistan and the effect that the Taliban had on her, her family, and the society. She’s very courageous as a national leader. As a young woman in a country where individual groups and traditional civilians want her silence, Malala didn’t hold anything back when talking about her story. She is authentic and bold. The book also had her parents perspective on the situation in which they went through. Her parents had a significant impact on her and her leadership as of today.I thought that the book was thorough. The story was in chronological order; it made it easier for the readers to follow. She also gave a short but essential background of the society and of her parents which all had affected her and the person she became today. If the reader didn’t know about the culture or her parent's history, they wouldn’t understand why people are inspired by her or what the current situation in Pakistan had on her. She didn’t mention much about her two brothers. Knowing about them would allow us to see their perspective on her as a sister as she is straying from the norm.An important theme that I found compelling is persistence. Malala didn’t give up her passion for education and even risked her life to be educated. Malala values education and school not only for herself but all the girls and boys. When the Taliban bombed schools and forced girls to stay home instead of going to schools, Malala tried everything in her power (interviews, diary, documentary) to be able to attend classes again. Even when shot in the head, she didn’t give in. She turned a local issue into a worldwide discussion.Another theme is gender roles in Pakistan. Women aren't treated equally as men, but instead, the society represses women. Malala grew up with parents that are more liberal which allow her to have more freedom. That is not typically in Pakistan. Malala came to the leader not just for the people in Pakistan, but for all (girls/children) around the world. Because she is a young woman and fight for her rights to be educated, she is slowly changing the society and their view on gender roles.I truly enjoyed the book. Knowing Malala's story made me admire her even though I’ve never met her. I’m also motivated and is inspired to better my education and keep on pushing myself even when it is difficult. She is a role model for everyone. Women, girls, and boys will enjoy reading this book. They could benefit from reading this book by being more motivated, courageous, and to speak up for what is right. Also, anyone who wants to know more about life in Pakistan and Malala’s experience in that society should read it. The book thoroughly talked about her experience in Pakistan and her work.

I love this book, it is a classic and well worth the read whether you consider yourself a "christian" or not, so when I saw this version for 99¢, including the audio narration, I was thrilled and purchased it right away. Then I started to read it, in the prologue there is a note from some priest who has taken it upon himself to pare down the book by removing all of the "sermons" that he believes slow the story down. While that is fine for some people who may prefer this pared down version, it should be advertised up front as "abridged", which it is not. Had I known I was getting a much less meaningful version of the book, I would never have purchased it, which is why I rated it as 1 star.

Pilgrim's Progress is a classic that is just as powerful today as it was when it was first written in 1678. If you are like me though, you have struggled with the reading of this beloved book. The way we speak now has changed a lot through the years and sometimes picking up a book from a different time period can be challenging to read.I am excited to tell you about the new publication of Pilgrim's Progress. It is updated, in Modern English, but still has the original illustrations. This made such a huge difference for me. What an enjoyable read it was! I did find myself, especially at the beginning, comparing it to the original text. I wanted to see for myself how much it was changed and amazingly, very little. It's tweaked just enough to make it easy to read for today's readers.Another very unique feature about this new publication is the Bible verses that are added to the text. I'm not talking about just a Bible reference either. Entire verses including where they are found in the Bible are throughout the whole book. For example:In my dream, I saw a man clothed with rags standing in a certain place, with his face turned from his own house. In his hand he held a book, and he bore a great burden upon his back. (For my iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. -Psalm 38:4)This was such an amazing aspect for me. It enriched the reading in such a spiritual way. I applaud whoever came up with the idea to do this. I'm sure it took a lot of work and study, but it was well worth it.Pilgrim's Progress is not a quick read. It is something to be savored. To be meditated upon. I found myself reading some of the lines/paragraphs more than once. Then I would sit and close my eyes and think on it. If you allow it, it can speak volumes to your heart. What an encouragement for the Child of God! This is a great story with a picture on every page! It is an allegorical story following the character named Christian. Christian meets lots of people along his way to try to get rid of the burden on his back representing his sin. He cannot remove the burden on his own. Some people lead him astray and some people point him back to the right path towards Jesus and Salvation. Christian eventually reaches the cross and gives his life to Jesus. Jesus forgives his sins and the burden falls off his back into a bottomless pit and he is made new with a new identity in Christ! That is only the beginning of the story however and Christian goes on to learn what it means to live a life for God. He also eventually equips himself with the armor of God. It's a great story and one I recommend to every parent with young children! When my mother read this to me at 4 years old I gave my heart to Jesus. When Christian reached the cross I told my mom, "Mommy I want to give my burden to jesus too!" I pray this story will continue to share the gospel with many more people for years to come!

This is one of the better versions of the Pilgrim's Progress. The version is written in clear modern language. The Bible Verses are conveniently located so one can easily read and compare them to the way John Bunyan uses them in the story. (The Bible verses are actually written out not just marked) I have several versions of the Pilgrim's Progress, so I have read this story over and over many times. I would highly recommend this version and the one written by Barry Horner. Both of the books have their advantages. If you have read this story before and you really didn't get anything out of it, I would suggest you buying this version and trying it again. I have gained different insights with each and every reading.

It has been slightly updated , the neat part is what ever they have changed , updated they give you the original phrasing as along side it . The really great thing is that they also print the whole scripture verse Bunyan is using to support his Auto Biographical Allegory . It also includes the 100 early wood cut pictures in their entirety , ( Note : the hard back would be a great edition to your Library if you do not already have a illustrated Pilgrim's Progress . This makes this a great devotional tool and a great teaching tool . God used J.Bunyan in a remarkable way as he had minimal schooling thus he learned to write , spell and compose sentences based on his learning to read and through the study of the English Bible , basically self taught ( I would say Holy spirit taught ,but that might offend some ) . He has been recognized as the first writer of the English Novel . Many doubted that such an unlearned man could have written this book . His response was to write 'The Holy War " an allegory on the war between Satan and his army in the taking of the City of Man's Soul and its recovery by God The Father Son and Holy Spirit and the following attacks made on man's soul for the rest of his mortal life . ( This book also available by Aneko Press ) Note this Aneko Press has a number of Christian Classics in print , Paper back;, hardback ; digital Kindle . They are to be highly commended for the service they are doing to keep these treasures available . First Class would give them 10 stars if I could .

This is an excellent cookbook.Inside this book you will find many tasty and healthy recipes.These dishes are great for people with hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.It's also good for those who just want to eat healthy.I hope you must find this book useful.

Lots of interesting recipes but when you get to the nutritional values they list calories, fat, carbohydrates and protein. Sodium not listed anywhere! How can you call a book a Low Sodium cookbook and never give the ONE nutritional value that is of most interest? Book is going back.

Many mistakes all the way through. Nutritional information Incomplete, didn’t include sodium in the nutritional information!

First, half of the text is illegible. It looks like there was no ink in the printer. I am on a low sodium diet so was really surprised that in the nutrition information for a low sodium cookbook does not provide any information on sodium, the reason I bought the book in the first place. There are some obvious errors in serving size and calorie count. I would like a refund as this cookbook is useless to me.

I have to watch my sodium and so I'm always on the lookout for books like this. This one is a bit different than others in that it focuses more on slow-cooker, or "crock pot", types of recipes. There's a wide variety here and while I definitely find some too complex for my tastes.The first section somewhat goes over general guidelines and how the author codes references. After that the first section of recipes are mostly sauces and such, intended (usually) as a base for something else later in the book. The section that follow run the gamut, *generally* increasing in sodium used towards the end of the book. I found dozens that I intend to try and book-marked about a third of the book overall.VERY well recommended if you're looking for low sodium ideas!

As others have noted the sodium amount in the recipes is not listed in the nutritional values. Others have noted this and I didn't look closely at the reviews prior to purchasing this cookbook. I also found it amazing that Pressure Cooked Crab Leg and Easy Simple Lobster are included as low sodium dishes. A 4oz lobster tail contains 1,239Mg of Sodium. A 3oz serving of crab legs contain 650 Mg of sodium. (Sodium levels from MyFittnessPal.) I am very disappointed that the American Heart Association would put their name on a cookbook as Low Sodium when it obviously isn't designed for that purpose.

[CT]Components of a Grant Proposal [IP]The grant proposal is your response to a request for proposals. The RFP contains your instructions and, most often, an outline of content. In this chapter, youÂ’ll learn what the outline usually looks like and get some tips for "reading between the lines." [H1]What to Expect [NF]RFPs can range from a single sheet of guidelines to hundreds of pages of instructions and attachments. In nearly every case, the RFP requires a needs section, a project description (with goals and objectives), an evaluation section and a budget. [H1]Read the Directions [NF]The entire RFP package is instructional and you are expected to read every word in it. Accomplished grantwriters turn first to the outline to determine how much work will go into the proposal. Then they also start reading the remainder of the packet to ensure that they are not missing important information. [SIDEBAR] [E-ssential] [SB] Experienced grantwriters turn to the instructions to identify the extent of the work required. Based on the outline, they can determine (a) whether they can schedule adequate time to work on the proposal and (b) the cost estimate for their services. [ESB] RFPs from the Federal Register are several pages in length. Each page contains up to four columns of very small type. It should take approximately one hour to review the contents, highlight those that are promising, and make notes on important information that will help guide your writing process. ItÂ’s also helpful if you use the directions as a framework for discussing the program with your clients and taking notes while they talk. The notes will help you write the narrative. The outline for the proposal will be apparent, but additional directions may be scattered throughout the RFP. YouÂ’ll find other important and relevant information such as: [BL]Paper size and composition (the Environmental Protection Agency, for instance, requires use of recycled paper.) [BL]Spacing (if not specified as double spaced, single space your documents and double space between paragraphs or indent the beginning of each paragraph.) [BL]Minimum size of type face [BL]Deadline for submission (and whether by postmark or arrival date) [BL]Maximum number of pages [BL]Address and phone numbers for contact people and for submissions [BL]Formats [BL]Qualifications for grantees [BL]Purpose and goals of the grant program. (These are critical as you want your program to further the goals of the grantor.) [BL]Necessary forms and attachments [BL]Instructions for completing forms. [BL]Additional sections required (e.g., compliance statements, tables of contents, abstracts, etc.) [BL]Instructions for the order in which you must compile the finished grant proposal packet (sometimes also provided as a checklist). [SIDEBAR] [E-Alert] [SB]You may find instructions in the back of an RFP for submitting to the State Single Point of Contact, as well as to the granting agency. Make it a rule to check. There may be no other mention of the State Single Point of Contact anywhere else in the RFP. [ESB] [H1]Follow The Directions [NF]There are three rules to grantwriting: [NL]1. Follow the directions [NL]2. Follow the directions [NL]3. Follow the directions Redundant? Yes! But even though itÂ’s been stated several times throughout this book, it bears repeating. The simple truth is that if you forget or ignore directions, or miss something altogether when youÂ’ve gone through the instructions, your proposal will not be reviewed. Then your work has no value whatsoever. [H2]ThereÂ’s No Review Criteria? The directions may or may not include review criteria. In that case you can be assured that whatever the questions or headings they use in the outline are exactly what the granting agency wants prospective grantees to answer. [SIDEBAR] [E-Question] [SB]What is the most important thing to remember about responding to RFPs? [ESB] [H2]When RFPs Have Review Criteria Some RFPs replace an outline for your narrative with review criteria or a rubric. Read the questions or qualifications contained in the criteria carefully. Try to determine the gist of each question the grantors are posing. It will clue you in on how to respond. Then respond to each question as completely as you can. [H2]Sample of Need Section Instructions Following are instructions, in the form of review criteria, for the need section of an educational grant: 1. NEED (Ten points) "The proposal provides a brief explanation of why the project is needed. It summarizes the demographics of the district and the selected buildings that will be served by this funding; possible causes for an increase in the number of students requiring special education services or a decrease in state assessment reading scores; and the need for new resources and programs for students who are not achieving in reading or who are at risk of reading failure." [H2]Include Relevant Data In following the instructions, you will provide relevant data, first about the district and then by the building(s) in which you will implement the program. Relevant data would include the number of children and the percentage by building of children failing state assessment and other tests of reading. Other relevant data would point out possible causes for the need. [SIDEBAR] [E-Question] [SB]To emphasize possible causes for need, ask yourself: Are the data worse in buildings where most of the children come from lower-income homes? Are they in buildings where student mobility is a factor in achievement. And donÂ’t forget to cite the mobility rates. [ESB] [H2]Include Programs that Failed In addressing the last part of the criteria, youÂ’ll want to talk about what programs the buildings have tried in the past and why they havenÂ’t worked or helped children achieve as much as the principals had hoped. When you complete this section, youÂ’ll be set up to begin writing in the project description, addressing just why this project will succeed where others have failed (i.e., because it addresses previously unknown or emerging needs cited in the needs section.)

The Everything Grant Writing Book minces no words in informing readers that two of the most important abilities in grant writing are: The ability to follow directions and the ability to meet a deadline.I loved the authors' style and could see that it really wasn't intended to "insult" (although I wasn't insulted at all). What they convey is that you can have the best writing talent and your cause can be quite noble, but the sad fact is that most grants contain a myriad of directions that CAN be rather complex and daunting. I often have thought that these directions help them to "weed" out proposals right off! If these directions are not followed TO THE LETTER, your grant proposal usually isn't even read! Likewise, I have NEVER ever known a committee to make an exception and accept a grant proposal that is late. I would rather that the authors drive this point home in a book than for grant seekers to learn the hard way... An excellent book that I'm buying for my own personal collection.

I am taking a college Grand Writing Class on line. I use this book to help me understand the concepts for the class. I have a learning disability so having this book on kindle is helpful to be successful in class.

Terrific book - spells out, but someone who does grant writing for a living, exactly what you need to do to get the grants you need.

The NAB is one of the best committee versions available, Protestant or Catholic. I'm a Protestant and I read the New Testament in the original Greek and find the NAB, particularly this last revised edition, as one of the more accurate versions available. This is saying something because Catholics did not have an approved version of the Bible from the original languages until the 1st edition of this NAB was released back in 1970. Until then they had the RSV Catholic edition by special arrangement. They did have a few private versions by Catholic translators, like Knox's, Spencer,s and Lattey's. But nothing with Church approval. Sad, when Protestants had many at their disposal besides dozens of private versions. But with the NAB and NJB (ponied from the French with Hebrew & Greek) Catholics have some of the best committee versions. NOTE: this particular edition review here has one of the most pleasing type faces and page arrangements of any Bible available. It is truly a beautifully printed book, and the notes are wonderfully arranged. I've used the earlier editions of the NAB and they were poorly presented. This is a vast improvement and is up to date in its scholarship. ADDITIONAL NOTE: The apocryphal book of Ben Sira is translated from the original Hebrew rather than from the Septuagint, where the Hebrew exists. Only a few versions make reference to the Hebrew of Ben Sira, but this NAB rendering is better than any others. It even correctly indicates where the Hebrew of Ben Sira used the divine name in the Tetragrammaton by LORD in all caps where other versions despite having the Hebrew in front of them do not. This edition of the NAB you'll find a pleasure to use and will refer to it often, not only due to this quality but due to it's scholarship. Along with its beautiful page it is well bound. Protestant or Catholic, you'll love it. Treat yourself!

The Bible itself is wonderful. Font is distinctly bigger. Sturdy and wellmade. Overall, it’s a great bible. This will be a great gift for my mom but I might get another for myself. I have close-up photo of the bible cover since I intended to have it painted. But for those who wanted a customized catholic bible, this has a perfect plain cover to use as canvas.

For anyone concerned about the Kindle navigation, there are no current issues. I was concerned over which e-NAVRE edition to purchase and wanted one easily navigable. I have the hard copy book of this version, and for continuity and familiarity it seemed best to buy this. Previous reviews mentioned navigation format issues. After downloading and some experimental clicking, I thought I’d provide this review for 1) anyone deciding which version to purchase or 2) anyone having initial challenges using this version after purchasing.Referencing has been well executed. The scriptural cross-references appear at the bottom of the page in a pop-up box when you click the plus/minus sign next to the verse, and are also located in a group at the end of the book (Old and New Testaments). The same with the study footnotes, indicated with an asterisk. To facilitate smooth reading, the notes and cross-references disappear upon closing the pop-up box by clicking the “x” at the upper right corner. Since all reference material is at the end of the book, nothing interrupts the flow of reading straight through, chapter by chapter, if one desires. The plus/minus and asterisk signs to indicate footnotes are small by design and work well. I asked my XXL-handed husband to try clicking them on a Kindle Paperwhite and he had no problems; I did increase the font size a bit, as they blend into the text on a Kindle reading device. Reference indicators are in a gentle blue on Kindle for iPad and Kindle for iPhone instead of the typical red or bold red, so the text looks uniform. To me, they stand out more when reading on the iPad than on the dedicated Kindle reader. The Table of Contents divides the Old Testament scriptures into five sections and the New Testament scriptures into three sections. Once at the section, navigable clicking to each book’s chapter can be done.In summary, this is a classy, elegant electronic version of the NAVRE Bible. The cross referencing works well. It could require a bit of a learning or a patience curve, but nothing a studious person would consider an obstacle. I admit to some bias, as I own and love the hard copy version. Any previous issues with the Kindle version have apparently been resolved, with a most lovely result. I almost never write reviews. No compensation was provided :)

Harper's NABRE offerings are limited to this: a single, slightly oversized edition, with superior readability. The font face, though not large, is dark and sharp, set against cool white paper, which is, however, thin enough to allow bleeding. The two-column Biblical presentation is clearly distinguished from the editorial apparatus below by breaking the annotations into 3 columns of smaller text.A judicious use of dark red font color clearly identifies the originating textual reference before each footnote, marks off each table of cross-references, and provides an elegant highlighting within the Biblical text of editorial elements like chapter headings. Each listed cross-reference includes a bracketed reference back to the referring verse, and they are arrayed vertically for easy locating – thus avoiding a weakness with so many NAB editions.The margins are quite narrow, and there are no fan tabs, but the starting and ending book/chapter/verse are shown on the outside edges of the page headers, so the text is easy to navigate. Other than the margins, the use of white space is more generous than is typical in Bibles, helping to relax the eye. The publisher added no articles, schedules, or other helps to this edition, except for 14 pages of Zondervan maps. This is just a very well-done, no-nonsense reader’s edition NABRE.
