I pre-ordered this book about six months ago, and have been eagerly awaiting its arrival ever since. It far exceeded my expectations! Jill's designs are just stunning, and this is a book that you will definitely want to add to your beading library!The focus of the book, as you can tell from its title, is on beaded ropes. Lest you're worried (as I was) that it would only contain necklace projects, I hope you'll be happy to note that it contains several bracelet and earring projects -- and even a stunning ring called Ziggurat Ring.It is organized as follows:* Chapter 1: Supplies and Techniques* Chapter 2: Spiral Ropes* Chapter 3: Peyote Ropes* Chapter 4: Netted Ropes* Chapter 5: Herringbone Ropes* Chapter 6: RAW Ropes* Chapter 7: Other Stitches* GalleryIf you flip through the "Look Inside" feature of the book, you'll notice how lovely all the projects are. I always know that I'm going to love a new beading book when I flip through it and immediately want to start making everything in it -- which was also the case here. In addition to the projects, the Gallery section contains lovely, inspiring eye candy not only by Jill, but also by the likes of Melissa Grakowsky Shippee, Melanie Potter, Nancy Cain, and others.As with the other books in the Lark Master Series, the instructions are precise, the diagrams are excellent, and the supply lists are clear. I also love how these books are hardback, since they are so much easier to bead from.On a personal note, if you've ever taken a class with Jill or are friends with her on Facebook, you'll know that she is one of the sweetest and funniest people around -- and a bead artist who truly lives and breathes beads. Her instructions also have her fun sense of voice in them. I took a class with her last year when she was still in the process of writing this book, and she said that the editors had her get rid of some of the "Jill talk" in her instructions, but I think you'll find that her fun voice and spirit is still present in every project. Beading with her is a true delight.Happy beading!

Well I have to admit that some of the designs and instructions in Beautiful Beaded Ropes will take some time and study, as well as practice, but it is certainly no reflection on Ms. Wiseman's book. It is well-written and illustrated, with good, clear instructions. Beaded ropes are among my favorite designs, so that will drive me to keep practicing until it is easier to get it right.I've had this book for a few months now, and have found that each time I begin a project it becomes easier to understand the instructions. I am not a beginner - I would rate myself as average - so there are some things that are more difficult to follow than others, but I find that is the case when learning to do anything well.Compared to other jewelry-making books I have, I would give this book a B+, and I look forward to seeing other publications from Ms.Wiseman.Overall, this is one of the better books for instructions, visuals, and of course beautiful things to make.

So yes peeps you are going to get a completely fresh new outlook on an artist from a first-timers perspective. Ok here we go in my typical format:Pros:1) Like Heidi's book the placement of the Gallery in the back featuring multiple artists is a very large plus in my opinion. Could have added a few more and not gotten a squashed look but overall pretty terrific.2) Her variety is subtle, for the subject matter surprisingly there is a lot of variety. Keep in mind her book title is ropes so don't think you are going to get a flat bracelet in here as part of the variety.3) Her graphs/diagrams for each item are splendid and very detailed. It makes them very easy to read for any level. The beginner may take a little while to catch on but they will catch on.4) She speaks to all levels of beaders as the more experienced can add or subtract things in each example to make unique and different outcomes.5) The ways she uses to connect, accent or manipulate the ropes is unique and very much inspirational in it's own sake.6) She has one technique I have never seen, so there might be others or that one that some of you haven't ever seen.Neutrals:1) There is no supplier list to for some this can be a must.2) The stitch explanations can be considered just touching on them as they are not completely in depth. I would recommend that a true beginner have an alternate source for the stitches while the rest of the beading levels should be fine with this book.3) She has a hardbound book which is better than all other bindings except Perfect bound or Spiral bound for crafters. Probably not her choice I have learned but still may be a consideration of importance for some.4) Her supply list for each project is basic with no suggestions of alternate types or even colors. That can go either way for people depending on their crafting abilities and techniques, hence why it is neutral rather than either of the others.5) Every single project may not appeal to all. For some this can mean one project is viewed as usable up to all are usable. I think most will be somewhere in the middle to more usage category. I personally like the majority and so far looking through only two will probably not get made by if even that. I suggest looking at the Table of Contents in the preview to see if more than a few appeal.Cons:Well I have looked and looked and I can't find any obvious Cons unless there is some glaring mistakes I feel pretty confident in saying most that purchase this book will be at minimum, satisfied with some being over the moon about it. I am beyond satisfied with my purchase.Hope this helps some of you looking for some insight before purchasing.

I am working towards my graduate degree in history and this was an assigned book for one of my courses. While most books I am forced to skim through and do not read cover to cover, this book I could not put down. I read every word on every page, and stayed up late into the night to finish it in the two days I had to read it. I can say with great confidence that Joe Starita's "I Am a Man" is the best book I have ever read across all genres. Not only is the story he tells heartbreaking and compelling, but Starita's writing style is eloquent and nuanced, giving this historical, scholarly book the readability of a novel. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone, whether you are a historian or not.

I'm glad to have devoted time to reading this book. I live just across the river from Niobrara, Nebraska, which is the Ponca homeland. If I were a school superintendent anywhere around here I would make it required reading for high school graduation. It is not just the story of a remarkable human being (Standing Bear), but also the story of an important part of our young nation's history. Standing Bear's story is a courageous saga. He was a person of the highest qualities a human being can have. Gentle, yet determined; simple, yet perspicacious; reflective, yet realistic. The world gets far too few Standing Bears. Thus is the world as it is. The United States, great country as it is among nations, should never be allowed to forget its shame in the unspeakable manner it abused its native peoples. It cannot be exceeded in this sin. We will never cease to pay for it. Joe Starita has written a fine book explaining all this. He's done his research both in Indian matters, and in government and legal matters. You won't have wasted your time to read his book. I read a lot about the Native American Indians and how the mistreatment of humanity in those times by both the Indians and the Whites appears nothing short of tragic and appalling. Mr. Starita's in-depth research into this period of time in history, and especially the life of Chief Standing Bear, is very impressive. The book is definitely worth reading if you care about that time in American history. I highly recommend it.

This is a great book covering a difficult subject. I never knew the history of this tribe. As most historians only cover the more popular tribes.

This book is fantastic! I have cried, laughed, and been angered by what I have read. Most of all, I have read about an amazing man, the wrongs committed against him and his people, and the loving common people who worked to turn around the wrongs and right them. It reads like an exciting novel, and I have learned a lot from it.

A great book to learn about the tragic hardships Indian Tribes had to endure from the forced removal from their homelands to the "Warm Country".Highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn about how America past was shaped into today's modern society... How Native Americans were stuck in a foreign society and forced to assimilate and conform to western rules.

It gives us history that we did not get in our schools in my day and it makes us (me anyway) glad to learn that there were Nebraskans who sympathized with the plight of Standing Bear's people. It also tells me about another person who had a lot to do with securing human rights and who needs more recognition. Perhaps Nebraskans, especially Omaha people, will do something in recognizing Standing Bear and the judge who made the decision to recognize the Native American as a citizen of the United States at 15th and Douglas Streets, downtown Omaha.

I'd been given this book years ago as a gift for one reason; I am a lace maker and the giver thought I'd be interested. The gift copy sat on my bed stand for years and I finally gave it away. I then bought a Kindle copy since it would be easier to read.My supposition was that this was primarily a fantasy based book related to a mysticism around lace. That's not correct. This is a murder mystery/drama with some use of mythology as a device. There really is not much here regarding lace at all and ironically it is the one form of lace I do not make ( bobbin). That aside I felt deeply attached to the characters and enjoyed the book thoroughly. This is not my preferred genre but the writing rose above that definition.I am now reading the author's follow up book The Fifth Petal and have been surprised at how much I missed these characters. Worth your time, lots of historical content about Ametica's treatment of witches.

Amazingly well written story that is as unique as each shell in the sea! It gripped me from the beginning with descriptions that created visions of this world, it's inhabitants and the lace they created and read. There is a brief period as you near the climax that left me questioning if there actually was one or had I missed it...a period needed to prepare the reader for what was to come...A climax that made my heart beat faster, my shoulders tense and hooked me on every word as I navigated the unexpected twists and turns, the revelations and understanding of the evil that unfortunately is very real in this world! The most unusual thing about this story is that I was satisfied when I finished it, not crying out to know more or feeling patronized with a happily-ever-after closing...but left in a place to believe in the power of hope and healing. You won't regret a moment spent with this story!!

I love a book that doesn't give the reader all the information at once, and that's the case here. I liken it to meeting a new friend - you get to know them a little at a time. The characters the author develops are interesting and real, and the story unfolds at a great pace. Our heroine, Towner, isn't perfect and is easy to like, but even though a large part of the book is first person from Towner's point of view, we sense there is something more, something hidden under the surface. The storyline kept me entertained and wanting to return for more. Loved it!

While I thought the writing needed some editing, the storyline is compelling and the characters are drawn clearly and well. I don't know if this is a self-publication effort, but it reads like one. By that I mean that most books by traditional publishers are tightly written with very little ambiguity in the telling of the tale. This book is not that though it improves as the story moves along. Point of view changes are not smooth and sometimes confuse. If I have to reread a portion of a book in order to understand what is happening, I judge it not as well written as it could be no matter how much I like the premise and the story.

I really wanted to like this book - it has some great plot elements and interesting characters - but, in the end, it was just too much melodrama for my taste. It reads like a self-indulgent soap opera - albeit, a well-performed one. If that's your thing, here's your book - enjoy ;-)

I loved everything about this book from the setting, to the characters, to the plot that kept me guessing to the end whether I was being led astray or not. I loved the book so much that I immediately purchased Ms. Barry's second book without reading a sample - and I rarely pay that much for a Kindle book. I mean, how can those charges be justified when there are no printing/shipping/etc. costs? But anyway, the second book, to me, was a bomb. Absolutely nothing like the first one. I was left wondering if it was created in a hurry to follow up on the success of her first. Either way, I had high hopes after reading this book that I'd discovered a beautiful new writing voice. After the second book, that I couldn't even finish, I have high hopes that it was a bump in the road and book three will be back on track. But I believe if book three comes out I'll download a free sample first...or visit the library.

Set in Salem, Massachusetts, this novel intricately weaves together resonate history and sense of place, with mystic suspension of belief, and a thrilling mystery centered around two missing women, memory gaps, and the death of the narrator's twin sister. Barry's story telling is textured, patterned, smart, and suspenseful. I was enthralled with this beautifully moving book. That said, some of the content is traumatic and tragic, and might not be suitable for all readers.

There are so many levels to this book that it demands a close, attentive reading. There are more threads to the story than there would be in a huge piece of lace. The characters in this story, good and bad, are reminiscent of people we all know, and their actions are the ones we know, somewhere in ourselves, could happen far too easily. From fundamentalist fanatics to would-be (and apparently real) witches, this is the story of the whole human race, encased in one short time in modern Salem, Mass. Do yourself a favor, and read this book! It will haunt you for a long time to come.

I am in my 30s, been married for 4 years, and am a full-time working mom. My marriage has been in distress, and my husband refused to go to counseling. I purchased this book in hopes of finding some guidance.The book is a very quick read. I was surprised at how small the book actually is; however the book is loaded with information. I liked that it was written from the women's perspective and that the author provided stories about her struggles with her husband. The information was very relatable, and I definitely had a couple of "ah-ha!" moments. There were passages that seemed to describe my husband perfectly. I am not very religious; however I was not turned off by the biblical references.My question is, now what??! I am not sure how to implement changes to improve my marriage. The book explains that a husband absolutely needs to be respected and affirmed. There was a little guidance, but I need help with how to really implement changes. The lack of practical tips left me disappointed, but overall I thought the message of the book was very helpful. The survey results are undeniable and help me understand the importance of respect in a marriage.My husband and I are stuck in a cycle of lack of respect on my part and lack of love on his part. I am very hurt and angry, but I want to better my marriage. I am going to try the following actions for the next 30 days to see if there is an improvement. I have not talked to my husband about this book yet, I am going to wait to see if I get results.My 30-day action plan:1) Always accept his opinion and judgement on a matter and only offer my opinion if asked2) Initiate casual physical connections at least once a day (ie: rubbing shoulders, sitting next to on couch, etc.)3) Initiate sex at least once a weekI will give an update regarding the results. I am unsure about item #1 above. I consider myself a modern feminist; however I know that my husband thinks that I am critical and demanding. I am hopeful that by acting more respectful that he will in turn actively seek out my opinion so we have an equal relationship. I certainly don't have anything to lose at this point. I already thank him on a regular basis for important little things that he does to help with our child and around the house. I also tell him that I love him and always ask him about his day. (Wish he would do the same for me!) Any other tips would be appreciated!UPDATE 05/08/2013:We are definitely in a much better place in our relationship now compared to 30 days ago. I did not follow my plan exactly as I had intended, but I did make a lot of changes. I also learned a lot about how I treat my husband and how I need to continue to change.Comments about my specific action plan steps:1) I often forgot that my plan was to always accept his opinion. I need to work on this area. I have found that if I carefully listen to what he has to say, acknowledge what he has said, and then offer my two-cents - he is much more open to my opinion. Or if I wait awhile and then later offer my opinion, that works too. My DH just really wants to feel that he is heard and that his opinion is respected.2) I often forgot to initiate casual physical connections until the very end of the day. I admit that it felt like a chore on my "to-do" list which is really horrible. It made me realize how much our relationship has changed from our early courtship to now being parents of a toddler. I am working on being more casually physical, and my DH seems to really appreciate it. He has been reciprocating quite a bit.3) I only did this once the whole month. Epic fail on my part. I am committing to implementing this step during the next 30 days.Although I was not successful at carrying out each action step - it did open my eyes in a big way. I realize that I can make a lot of positive changes in our relationship. I also realized that I critique my husband A LOT about things around the house that need to be done or should have been done differently. He NEVER critiques me. Literally, never. I would hate to be treated the way I treat him. So I am definitely working on making changes in that area too. If I continue to be aware of my actions, I am confident that things will continue to improve. I plan on talking to my DH at some point about the book, but I am waiting until we are on more solid ground.

My husband was going to leave me after 20 years of marriage. Listening to this book on tape, and him listening to "For men only", turned our marriage completely around. I thought I knew a lot about men, having read a ton of relationship books. But this gave me a deep insight to my husband's needs and how he is hardwired to respond. Now, when I want to discuss an issue and he is quiet, I know that means he is processing the issue step by step and not ignoring me. Wish I had learned this 30 years ago. Could have saved us both a lot of heartache.

I love to read true accounts, and this one was not a disappointment. I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I was amazed at all the survivors accomplished by using just what they found on the island, as well as their wrecked ship. Amazing what people can accompish when they put their minds to it!

I feel the same way today.I have read several of these 19th century adventure books, like Ernest Shackelton's polar voyage and George De Long's experience on the USS Jeanette wreck. This ranks right up there among the best of these.It contrasts the experience of two sets of castaways on the same deserted island in the Southern Ocean south of Australia. Wow..fantastic and incredibly well researched book. Couldn't put this down and finished it in a day! This book as incredibly well written. So often books like these can quickly become dry and you loose interest. Joan was able to use an amazing amount of research and backsory to build up an engaging authentic masterpiece. She was also able to weave together multiple plots quite successfully, and as reader, I wasn't confused. Another reader pointed out similarities in this tale and Ernest Shackleton's adventure, which I would definitely agree with. Check out Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage which was the book that really sealed the deal for me in adventure saga's.Since I was a kid and first read Robinson Crusoe, I've been enamored with tales of shipwrecked souls. There aren't too many in general out there, and not sure how I missed out on this one for so long. It was so good I bought a copy for my grandmother who really enjoys nautical tales, and she really enjoyed it was well. A++

To me this was a page-turner, a thoroughly enjoyable story of a real historic event. The author has scoured the available written logs to produce a factual yet also entertaining narrative.She follows the fortunes of two groups of shipwrecked sailors. One is made up of people that learn to care for each other: they read the bible every day, pray for their deliverance, band together and help each other at every turn. "Love one another as I have loved you" is the crucial scripture that informs their every action from early on. They prosper against overwhelming odds. Another lacks all leadership, morality or inner guidance and quickly turns on itself, its selfish individuals either murdering, cannibalizing or bullying each other to a quick death.

Never just a dry account of the tasks required for survival, she paints portraits of the two crews with all their strengths and shortcomings.Although the two ships smashed into the forbidding rocky coasts within a short period of each other, neither knew the other was there.Captain Musgrave exhibited good leadership and, that along with the skill and ingenuity of the Frenchman Raynal, resulted in all five men to survive. Misfortune struck the Scottish ship, being burdened with a weak captain and a crew unwilling to do what was required to live.The book has special meaning to us, as we were two of the very few people allowed to visit these islands a few years ago on a small expeditionary ship. We walked among the Royal Albatrosses on Campbell Island, and made our way past beachmasters , Hookers sea lions, on Enderby Island. The biggest surprise in the book was no mention of penguins, which today are quite abundant. The yellow-eyed penguin populates Enderby, and the Snares penguin is endemic to Snares Island. One is not allowed to walk on Snares because it is covered with nests of 5 million pairs of sooty shearwaters on the fragile peat. It’s a sight one doesn’t forget when, at dusk, the sky is black as these birds return from a day hunting at sea to feed their chicks.

His analysis is deep and penetrating, if very lengthy. Isby goes into detail into every aspect of the conflict in Afghanistan (and Pakistan), and examines the many challenges the US and its allies face there. His analysis of the relations between al Qaeda, the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban, and there support networks in Pakistan's tribal areas is particularly noteworthy.The challenges that Isby identifies are daunting to say the least, yet he shows how all of them have viable solutions, if only the US and its allies will be willing to put in the time, effort, and resources to properly see them through.An outstanding read for anyone seeking an in depth look into the conflicts plaguing Afghanistan, Pakistan, and US policy in the region.

informative but not a very good read FYI

I purchased the kindle version of this book for a class on the Conflict in Afghanistan. The author is of course very knowledgeable, and the book is easy to read.

I had this book on my shelf for over a year and finally got around to reading it. There are very few books I have put down and stopped reading on the subject of Afghanistan. No Easy Task: Fighting in Afghanistan was one, and Isby's book was another. I read 75 pages of it and stopped. There were several grammar mistakes which makes any book difficult to continue reading. Secondly, the book is entitled, "A New History of the Border Land". The book did not give a history of anything that read in chronological order. It was all over the place. The book was extremely dry, contained very little quotations from sources/ conversations, and read like a textbook written by an analyst for analysts.

I've been to Afghanistan. I have seen Afghan women cry as their babies died of tragically easily preventable sickness. I have seen Afghanistan's wars and what it has done to the Afghans. I have even met the author of this book, who has also spent a lot of time in Afghanistan and Pakistan over the years.I have seen what is at stake in Afghanistan. I know the lives of Afghan people who deserve better are being shaped by decisions made, not by themselves or their kin, but by men behind desks in Washington, Tampa, Rawalpindi Cantonment and other far and distant places. One of the things that continues to blight the lives on the Afghan people is that neither these men nor those that implement their policies understand Afghanistan. That applies to good guys as well as bad guys. I have seen well-intentioned aid workers make ill-informed decisions that led to more deaths than any trigger-happy soldier could inflict.If you want an idea of both WHAT is happening in Afghanistan and WHY, I recommend AFGHANISTAN, GRAVEYARD OF EMPIRES. For a sense of what is at stake in Afghanistan, it pulls together the conflicts in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. The author is an experienced military analyst, but this book is not about battalions and operations. Rather, it aims to put the wars in an Afghan (not US) political and cultural context, which is what the men behind desks, men trying to do good works or men leading troops in Afghanistan never seem to understand, to the Afghans' great sorrow and cost.I have seen the result of many of the policy, military and aid failures that this book describes. By no means all of them are the result of outsides. The author knows enough to realize that Afghans are not just victims, but have been part of the reason why the conflicts in their remote conflict now touch lives throughout the world. If you need to understand Afghanistan, this book can make you better informed, even if it cannot provide the needed answers to Afghanistan's conflicts.

This book examines the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan since the fall of the Taliban in 2001, when the Taliban and al Qaeda escaped to regroup in the borderlands of Pakistan. From there, the Taliban and al Qaeda sought (and still seek) to overthrow the governments in Kabul and Islamabad and to carry the war to the West.Isby provides a very thorough treatment of the actors and issues in these wars that is accessible to the general reader, with just enough reference to pre-2001 history to put things in context. He describes the lands and peoples involved, the dual faceted role of Pakistan as both sponsor and victim of terrorism, the evolution of al Qaeda from an Afghanistan-based to a Pakistan-based movement, the different factions of the Taliban, the role of narcotics trafficking, and the insurgency in Pakistan. He concludes that these wars must be won, and can be won if the US is "willing to pay the considerable costs" of doing so.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know why we're still in Afghanistan nearly ten years after 9/11 and who wants to understand the ongoing crisis in Pakistan.

If I could give a 3.5 stars I would. It's not a bad book but it relies on environments which can't be setup anymore to follow the examples. I hope she makes a second edition with a docker environment. It would also benefit from additional practice tasks beyond the walkthrough.

This is a great book to start learning about pen testing but unfortunately at this moment it is a bit outdated and the external material hosted by the autor is not longer available.

This book is outdated and certain sections of the lab setup are no longer available. If you don't have some Linux experience then you won't be able to fully setup the labs properly. Also the author removed her own software that covers the entire chapter on mobile device pen testing. I have found someone that created a whole web page that fixes some of the outdated links and directions, sadly the author doesn't offer much to update her own book on her website.

A great introduction to penetration testing. I love the hands on approach to learning. You more than likely will have issues running all the examples in the book verbatim due to later versions of the various software involved or the lack of access to old windows operating systems for the labs; but if you focus on the content rather than being able to work out everything exactly in the book, it lays out a great foundation to learn about penetration testing.

Nice info but outdated software makes this nearly impossible to work through.

It is laid out very well. I am yet to complete it but have a good feeling about how it progreses - good for beginners as it guides you from the absolute basics.

I love Tim Green as an author and decided to read "The Big Time" for that reason alone. I'm not a teen/young adult but I think this sould be required reading in middle school, as the author lived up the to quality of his previous works.Let me step up on my soapbox to say that we're become a society who worships wealth and celebrity above all things, much to our detriment. This book is a primer for any child and/or parent with concerns about how success can change your life, not always for the better, and that sometimes it's not only your enemies that you need to keep closer. Step down. Enjoy!
