It all started with Scribble, then came the Dots, the Shapes, and the Snippets! On one of the rare weekends I was home, away from work, my son gathered the whole series, grabbed his paints, scissors, and constructions papers, and said he wanted to make scribbles, dots, shapes, and snippets with me! We spent more than 2 hours cutting, coloring, talking, and laughing! The next day, and the following, and the following, for almost a month now, son started to build a whole Snippet City (seriously, I need to vacuum now!). A city complete with walls, houses, fire station, zoo, bridges, trees, roads, even signs. My son has gone crazy creative--and all he needed was paper, crayons, a scissors, and...well...some time with mom! He even asked me to take pictures so he could send them to the author. What more can a children's book accomplish? Thank you Ms. Alber!

Snippets is a phenomenally engaging story that touches on some heavy topics for any child, fitting in, diversity, and how different isn't a bad thing. Throughout all of this story the author has managed to incorporate a basic geometry lesson and teaching children to identify shapes throughout! My niece and nephew were fully engaged on both fronts, with the capping moment, as we closed the book, being them pointing to the book and yelling "rectangle!". Strongly recommend!

What a great perspective on being unique! This is a wonderful story about inclusion and celebrating one’s unique talents and gifts. Great jumping off point for a collage project in art class too.

This story is absolutely adorable! Not only were my kids and I engaged to see what was going to happen next, they were taught a lesson in kindness as well! Their imaginations ran thinking about all they could do with those snippets! Wonderful story!

Diane’s books are all great sources of inspirations for children (and adults) - not only for arts and crafts projects but also to challenge us to see things differently, accept imperfections, and find value in seemingly useless things. I highly recommend this book to all families with young children and schools working with preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary grades.

This is a great book to read with your children. It opens their minds, is quite engaging....my kids wanted to make "Snippets" immediately. The entire series is great. I plan to purchase them again to donate to my children's school. I think they are great for all kids to read and to have in their library at home. Enjoy. This book will not disappoint.

Enjoyed reading this book with my daughter yesterday night! She loves paper craft and this book would come in handy when we make a house using different shapes! Love the colors and the appeal 😀

Just finished reading "Snippets" with our 3 boys and they were all engaged. Very cute story idea! My kindergartener loves to create with the scraps basket!

Immediately added to my favorites shelf. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The Woman Who Smashed Codes will be compared with Hidden Figures, and that's fair, to a point. Both books have at their core a story of remarkable scientific/mathematic achievement, overlooked because of gender, largely forgotten (until now) as others took credit. But it is so much more, so rich in its account of not only an extraordinary woman, but the time in which she lived, two World Wars and her central role in both, the incredible marriage that gave birth to modern American cryptanalysis, that I think it deserves to be evaluated on its own.Even in the hands of a merely serviceable writer, it would be an enjoyable read. But Fagone elevates the story, weaving it into as rich a tapestry as you could hope for. Secondary characters jump from the page just as much as Elizebeth and her husband William; little details transport you to the small, smoke-filled rooms where Elizebeth and her tiny team toiled in obscurity in defense of the country. Fagone firmly establishes Elizebeth Friedman's place in our history, and not only gives her her due, but demands that we reevaluate what we thought we knew about the wars, and the origins of America's intelligence services (nearly all of them have her fingerprints on them), and the people who are given credit for critical milestones in the country's history. This is a magnificent, memorable, important book.

Anyone interested in the History of cryptography knows William F. Friedman, known as the man who broke Purple the Japanese cipher machine and many things. But who did know that his wife, née Elizebeth Smith, was his equal in cryptographic skills? She created a Coast Guard cryptographic team, broke an Enigma without any help from Bletchley Park, helped expose many Prohibition-era gangs and Nazi spy networks in South America during WWII and worked in tandem with William during WWI. She is as much part of cryptographic history as her husband is.This is her history in that book, I highly recommended it.I knew she was very good but I didn't know she was that good. Thanks to the author for the book, loved it.

When Richard Nixon asked Chou En-Lai in 1972 about the impact of the French Revolution, the Chinese Premier famously said, "It's too early to tell." That terse response is generally understood to illustrate the Chinese ability to take the long view of history. But it might be more accurate to regard it as reflecting the constraints on those who write history. Historians can only work with available records: there is no history without documentary evidence. And sometimes decades, even centuries pass before the most crucial evidence comes to light. In fact, ironically, the exchange between Nixon and Chou reflects a misunderstanding that drives the point home even more strongly: they were both referring to the events of 1968, not 1789. Only now, much later, once a diplomat present at the scene clarified the exchange, can historians accurately interpret what the two men meant. There are few areas in which the unavailability of documentary evidence has been more telling than in the history of espionage in the 20th century. Only in recent years have the archives of the CIA, the KGB, MI6, the NSA, and other leading intelligence agencies opened widely enough for us to understand what really took place in the world of espionage in World War II and the Cold War. (Doubtless, some explosive documents are still locked away and won't surface until later in this century, if ever.) And there is no more dramatic example of how what has passed for history has misled us than what we have been taught about the FBI's role in counterespionage in the 1920s and 30s (combating rumrunners and smugglers) and in the 1940s (catching Nazi spies).Working with recently declassified files from the World War II era as well as long-ignored archival records and contemporary press reports and interviews, journalist Jason Fagone has brought to light at last the astonishing story of Elizebeth Smith Friedman and her husband, William Friedman. (Yes, her first name is spelled with three e's.) As Fagone shows in his beautifully written story of this surpassingly brilliant couple, The Woman Who Smashed Codes: A True Story of Love, Spies, and the Unlikely Heroine Who Outwitted America's Enemies, the Friedmans may well have been the most important 20th-century American codebreakers, and quite possibly the best and most successful in the world.William Friedman is celebrated in cryptology circles as the man who broke the Japanese military code called Purple. "MAGIC became the top-secret moniker for these Japanese decryptions . . . MAGIC led directly to bombs falling on imperial ships at Midway," the turning point of the war in the Pacific.Fagone notes, "Today historians of cryptology believe that in terms of sheer, sweaty brilliance, the breaking of Purple is a feat on par with Alan Turing's epiphanies about how to organize successful attacks on German Enigma codes." However, independently, before the US and Britain's Bletchley Park were collaborating on the effort, Elizebeth Friedman broke not one but three different types of Enigma machines. Fagone makes abundantly clear that the two were at least equal in ability. In fact Elizebeth may have been just a bit smarter. (William always insisted she was.)"William Friedman is . . . widely considered to be the father of the National Security Agency," Fagone writes. But both he and Elizebeth came to loathe the practices of the agency not long after its formation in 1952. It's very likely they would be scandalized by the indiscriminate collection of information about civilians by today's NSA.As Fagone notes, "Elizebeth and William Friedman unscrambled thousands of messages spanning two world wars, prying loose secrets about smuggling networks, gangsters, organized crime, foreign armies, and fascism. They also invented new techniques that transformed the science of secret writing, known as cryptology." Although today Elizebeth isn't nearly as famous as her husband, that was by no means always the case. During the 1930s, she become a celebrity for her work against rumrunners and other smugglers and gangsters during the Depression. The public attention halted when she was enlisted by the Coast Guard for a top-secret effort to identify the extensive Nazi spy network in South America—work at which she and her team were extraordinarily successful. Their efforts led to the dismantling of the Nazi network well before the end of the war. However, J. Edgar Hoover claimed the success for the FBI, ignoring their efforts, and he was able to get away with it because he had become so powerful. "It's not quite true that history is written by the winners," Fagone writes. "It's written by the best publicists on the winning team."The Woman Who Smashed Codes is an astonishing story that simply has to be read to be believed. His principal subject, Elizebeth Friedman, was an extraordinary woman he refers to more than once as a genius. (The evidence is there.) And Fagone writes the tale with often-elegant, metaphorical prose. He calls the book a love story, but it is of course far more than thatThe same declassification of secret files that allowed Jason Fagone to write The Woman Who Smashed Codes has led to the publication of several other recent books about women in espionage. The most prominent of these was Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War II by Liza Mundy.

Move over Mata Hari! Elizebeth Smith Friedman extracted secrets from enemies not by her feminine wiles, but by her intelligence and innate ability to solve codes. She became fascinated with codes while working at Riverbank Laboratories to reveal what were believed to be codes in the works of Shakespeare. She met William Friedman there and, as a married couple they were recruited by the army to decipher codes during WWI. Using pencil and graph paper, the Friedmans were instrumental in the defeat of Germany. From 1920-1930, Elizebeth worked for the Coast Guard in deciphering codes sent by bootleggers and drug smugglers. Many were arrested and convicted based on both her evidence and testimony. During WWII, she deciphered radio codes, especially from Nazi agents working in South America. Her husband worked for the OSS and developed both cypher machines and code manuals. He was the breaker of the Japanese Red Code while she broke the Nazi Enigma Code. Mrs. Friedman swore an oath never to reveal what she had done during the wars. Thanks to the diligence of Jason Fagone, archives in the Marshall Library bring to light the work of this American heroine. Though the title is too long and the portion on George Fabyan and his Riverbank Laboratories a bit tedious, the rest of the book reads like a fascinating spy novel. Yet, this is a work of history which finally gives credit to a woman who lived in the shadow of her brilliant husband, but through her own superior capabilities, served her nation tirelessly on the cryptic battle front.

Sophie takes drastic action and so the adventure and the romance begins. This East of the Sun, West of the Moon retelling left out the part of the fairy tale I don't like - the mother convincing the daughter to be sneaky and light a candle at night so she can see what her husband looks like - making it one of my favorite retellings. All the other elements from the fairy tale are included. The mother and the candle wax are included also just differently and I personally like this version of the story much better than the original.Sex - only a kiss or twoLanguage - no profanity, swearingViolence - pain inflicted by villan several times, one character is killedReligion - none

A Bear's Bride was a short, choppy, and mostly harmless adaptation of "East of the Sun, West of the Moon," featuring Sophie, the third oldest daughter of the fairy godfather-cursed family. The ending of An Unnatural Beanstalk in which Eva was worried that Sophie would do something rash upon learning that her father wanted to marry her off to a boring farmer led straight into the beginning of this book. In An Unnatural Beanstalk, Sophie was said to have a reputation of calling upon Mortimer, her family's bumbling fairy godfather, far more than any of her siblings. She follows suit by immediately asking him to help her get out of her arranged marriage. He transports her to the castle of a prince named Henri who gets along with her immediately, and they get married. Considering how many problems Mortimer's gifts cause Sophie's siblings in the other books, this one did a pretty sloppy job of incorporating his character. His magic never actually ends up harming Sophie, as the troll queen is the sole cause of all of her and Henri's problems. The biggest issue I had with A Bear's Bride is its pacing. It's very sloppy. I might have forgiven it if it was one of the longer books in the series and the author wanted to keep it at novella length, but it's actually the shortest next to A Goose Girl, which was paced much better. It is also the only one that ended with a sample chapter of one of the author's other works that was completely unrelated to Entwined Tales, which felt a little self indulgent to me. The worst pacing problem is that Sophie and Henri got married less than halfway through the book, so it felt like there was absolutely no buildup to their relationship. Unlike the fairy tale, she didn't even see him as a polar bear until a decent amount of time after their wedding, which seemed weak because she already knew how handsome he was by then. You wouldn't have Beauty meet the Beast as a prince and then have him tell her "Oh, by the way, I turn into this monster sometimes, but you don't have to look at me when I'm like that because I know you like me better like this." Yet, that's exactly what this book does. Sophie already has her handsome prince and she just looks at him in his bear form later out of sheer curiosity.I will say that the book's one saving grace is Princess Ambrosia, the daughter of the troll queen who punishes Sophie for the unforgivable crime of kissing her own husband. It hadn't even been established at that point that they had never kissed until it became part of the plot. Ambrosia was Henri's reluctant bride and captor who was all too willing to help Sophie save him from her mother's wrath because she had no desire to marry him. She was a very comedic character, much like Davina from A Goose Girl and Rapunzel from An Inconvenient Princess, causing this book to fit the tone of the series better than An Unnatural Beanstalk, despite not being written as well. It was a lot of fun reading about Ambrosia's antics to get out of her arranged marriage without particularly caring about Sophie's well-being in the process. She was fun and hilarious, and I think the book would have been a lot more interesting if it had been told from her perspective. Her mother, Amara, was a pretty bland villain, but Ambrosia made it all worthwhile.Even though A Bear's Bride was my least favorite of the Entwined Tales, I wouldn't say it was an unpleasant read. It was just bland and held little substance. It kept up with the tone of the overall series, despite working with an unpopular fairy tale and making little use of Mortimer's bumbling. It could have been more enjoyable if the pacing were better and it had stayed closer to the source material with Sophie not knowing what Henri looked like as a man. I would only recommend this book to hardcore fairy tale fanatics or completionists who want to read every book in the Entwined Tales series. Otherwise, it's safe to skip over this one.

Bear’s Bride by Shari L. TapscottI received this book as an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for my honest review. I have no relationship with the author (other than the fact that I love the books she’s written). This is my honest review.Sophie craves adventure. When her father promises her to a dull farmer, Sophie runs away. She soon realizes that she hadn’t planned her escape well, and calls on Mortimer, the family’s fairy godfather. Mortimer whisks her away to the kingdom of Briadell to become the bride of its cursed prince Henri. Henri is a bear by day and a man at night. Sophie tries to break Henri’s curse and free her new kingdom from the Troll Queen Amara. This story is funny + sweet + romantic = perfect.

4.5 stars. This has been my favorite of the Entwined Tales thus far, a retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon. Sophie's father thinks that marrying her off will steady his carefree, mischievous and impulsive third daughter now that the two eldest are wed and settled. However, Sophie isn't interested in being tied forever to someone she doesn't love. So she runs away to seek an adventure (did I mention she's impulsive?), but she makes the mistake of calling on the family's grouchy fairy godfather for assistance. In a blink she's been transported to the neighboring mountain kingdom where its troll-cursed prince has been looking for a wife.I liked best how mismatched Sophie and and Henri eventually come to balance each other--he's the steady anchor, and she's the sparkling push.

This is the third installment of the Entwined Tales and I’m just loving them all so far! These authors have played off of each other’s characters incredibly well to make a fun, loving, and full of drama family that we can all relate to. I absolutely loved this story! Sophie is hilarious and spirited while Henri is heroic and a bit somber and they work so well together! I’ve never heard of the fairytale “East of the Sun, West of the Moon” but I definitely am going to look it up now because I’m very curious about the original fairytale.

Sophie wants adventure. Her father wants to marry her to a local farmer which does not at all appeal to Sophie. She runs away and ends up at the castle of a mysterious prince who hasn't been seen in years. This retelling of 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' was very well done. I've enjoyed this series very much as it has exposed me to new authors, Shari Tapscott being one of them. I will definitely check out more of her books.

I felt this story did a great job of keeping me on my toes. As much as I have read about fairies and curses and true love, I never knew quite how the author was going to spin this story, even with the basic, predictable elements. It was a delightful read with a strong hero and heroine, adventure, and true love.
