Maister, one of the world's leading authorities on the management of professional service firms, is the author of several successful books, including Managing the Professional Service Firm, True Professionalism, and Practice What You Preach, and coauthor of The Trusted Advisor.Charles H. Green is an executive educator and business strategy consultant to the professional services industry. Charlie has taught in executive education programs for the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, and for Columbia University Graduate School of Business, as well as independently through his firm, Trusted Advisor Associates. His current work centers on the nature of trust-based relationships within organizations, and on the management of professional service firms. This is a very good book--thoughtful, provocative, instructive. Having said that, there is nothing new here, nothing that hasn't already been said before, in "How to Win Friends and Influence People," by Dale Carnegie. Carnegie's book is the "Bible" on how to build trust, sell the right way, manage effectively, resolve customer and employee disputes, and succeed in a highly-competitive and often hostile world. In the '80s, while working for a large mid-western company and assigned the task of changing the culture of our large retail organization, I must have read a hundred books on selling, negotiating, problem solving, how to get along with the boss, management, dispute resolution, etc., etc., and the basics were all the same, and available in Carnegie's marvelous book. Having said that, I recommend this book. It's pointed, it's filled with example after example on how to build trust--the cement of long-term client relationships--and it gets at the heart of the matter: to be successful, you must learn how to listen effectively, be transparent in your motives, be flexible and open to change, be dedicated and driven, and most of all, be humble. Humility is the key to self-control. Final note: I know people who read book after book looking for some secret message that will enable them to leap over mountains and achieve great success, career satisfaction, and personal achievement. They read books such as this one, miss the timeless lessons being illustrated, and move on to another book. Stop: what you're seeking is right here. This book has all the Dale Carnegie essentials: read it, study it, ponder it, and remember, it's not the destination that counts, it's the journey.

As previous reviewers have noted, Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People” is more comprehensive, more actionable, shorter, and more readable. Nonetheless “Trusted Advisor” has a few good nuggets for those working to build and strengthen professional services relationships.The core of the book is the trust equation:Trustworthiness = (credibility + reliability + intimacy) / (self-orientation)1. Credibility: Listen empathetically for rational and emotional issues to help clients frame the problem then partner with them to craft a detailed solution with carefully managed expectations.2. Reliability: Deliver consistently and excellently on projects, mindful of small touches along the way.3. Intimacy: Communicate as you would with a close family member or friend, sharing and working through professional, and where appropriate, personal issues.4. Other-orientation: Always work (transparently) in your client’s best interest

Sure, be the trusted advisor, someone who never gets anything wrong. LOL The philosophy is good, but quite hard in practice. The other key take away is that you always work for your client's best interest. That's how you build trust. I'd say more important than that is you SHOW how your actions benefit them even at your own expense.Otherwise, they won't even realize how good they have it

I was referred to this book by a colleague. As a consultant, I need to provide the best possible service to my clients. This book is really basic. I found that most of its recommendations were things I already do and have done for years. It provides reliable advice on how to establish and maintain relationships with business associates. It does not provide much advice on how to prioritize and place needed boundaries on client contacts. Good but not great starter book.

This book is right on target. Anyone who desires to develop lasting relationships with clients will want to read this book. From the outset the authors hook the reader by establishing the three basic skills that a trusted advisor must have: (1) earning trust; (2) giving advice effectively; and (3) building relationships. And it gets better as the book progresses. The concept of building trust is brought home in a succinct equation: T = (C + R + I)/S where T is trust, C is credibility, R is reliability, I is intimacy and S is self-orientation.I have found this simple equation to be most useful in gauging the strength of relationships built over the years. It also explains how frustratingly easy it is to lose the trust we've built up. Those who have difficulty maintaining long term solid relationships with friends or clients would do well to check their self-orientation. It is highly likely, if you're honest with yourself, that you are pretty much motivated by your own self-interest and that will come through to clients and friends - regardless of the words you speak or protestations to the contrary.I wish I had come across this book (and the follow-on book by Charles Green, Trust-based Selling) years ago. It would have explained much about the success I had with clients as well as the failures that I suffered. This book will move the successful mentor/coach from the level of conscious incompetent to conscious competent and on to the ultimate goal of unconscious competent.

This book lights a pathway to a service that leaders and business owners need and don't easily find, the wise, honest, and trusted inner circle advisor. We have no shortage of consultants, professional services, and various fiduciary relationships, but there are few on the level that the authors describe. The trusted advisor is grown over time on a foundation of talent experience, and education, but in the end is more than that; more than just a consultant or technician. It is someone who surpasses all of that with a special combination of care, honesty, character, and wisdom. It is something to work to become, but does not come with a framed certificate or degree.

I thought it was a book about making papaya and banana smoothies and was shocked and disappointed to find it's really not about that at all. Read it anyway thinking he'd get to the smoothie part eventually but he never did. I learned a few things along the way. My girlfriend gives it a gasping 5 stars.

It was somewhat enlightening, but nothing I would recommend. After sitting in my desk for more than a year, I read SCF. It was an eye-opener. I never realized how little I knew about the female anatomy. After reading the book I better understood why over the years women said I was "too fast" and/or "too rough."Although I was a little overwhelmed at times with the technical aspects of the book, the first time I put the techniques into practice I was shocked how easy it was to step up my game. I made a VERY GOOD first impression with the new woman in my life. The responses to my moves were overwhelming. For the first time, I felt like I knew what I was doing. Throughout the night and in to the early morning, I always prioritized her. My contentment took her by surprise. I truly focused on savoring all aspects of pleasing her instead of worrying about my needs/desires. Since this was our first time together, this approach went a long way towards allaying her concerns that my interest might be short-term. As a result, I have laid the ground work for building a key facet for a strong, long-term “relationship.” I stress relationship because the book is about much more than sex. The premise of this book is pretty unique in my reading. The book is written, as the title will clue you in, as if it's the memoir of a female natural historian of what is essentially alternate Victorian England. It's a lot to take in but it works surprisingly well.Our memoirist, the eponymous Lady Trent, starts off the "memoir" introducing the reader to herself as a child and relating her early and lasting fascination with dragons and the research of dragons. From the asides and tone of the book you learn that Lady Trent is now an older lady who has become famous during her lifetime for her discoveries, which let her get away with a lot of things that a less-famous and younger lady would not be able to pull off.I did like that there were some original ideas in this iteration of dragons - it's always great to see something new brought to the table. With the scientific approach to dragons there was an emphasis on some things that usually get glossed over, like the physics of flight and commercial uses of things relating to dragons (trying to avoid getting adding spoilers). I also liked the quirk of dragon remains being extremely difficult to preserve and this presenting a real challenge for science.This book really appeals to a lot of things I like - fantasy, dragons, Victorian/Regency mannerisms (fantasy of manners), and a fun adventure. Although there are definitely conflicts and some violence in the book, because of it being told at a bit of a remove because of the "memoir" format it never feels very immediate, which for me worked well with the Victorian/Regency style feel.While this is not my new favorite book it was definitely an enjoyable read. This was the first book in a series and I'd be more than happy to read the sequels!

I love this book so whole-heartily that I came to buy it's sequel (A Tropic of Serpents) and stopped by to leave a review because I just want more people to enjoy the wonder of this book. First off let me tell you, Lady Trent is one of the greatest narrators I have ever had the pleasure of spending an entire book with. I love her. She is a well-developed and lovable woman with real fears, concerns, and desires. She understands her limitations, she just refuses to let them hold her back.Now on to the real review.First the cons:Honestly, I can't really think of anything I didn't like about this book. It was just that good, I literally loved every part of it.Now the pros:1. Lady Trent is a realistic strong woman, she doesn't pretend to be a man. She knows that she isn't. She is a woman and she has a woman's concerns and limitations. She doesn't put down other woman because they haven't achieved what she has and although she does find her friend Manda Lewis's obsession with sensation novels a bit frivolous, I never did get the feeling she actually hated Manda or really held it against her.2. This book is about dragons. Dragons man. And they don't disappoint, there are some amazing illustrations in the book of these majestic and awe-inspiring creatures supposedly drawn by Lady Trent herself. They really enhance the mood and help you to understand Lady Trent's desperate obsession with figuring out how they work.3. Jacob, Lady Trent's husband, is a humorous and likable secondary character. I loved him and well I won't say much more. You'll just have to read it.4. Dragma and Lady Trent's relationship is hilarious and develops quite nicely over the course of the book.5. The book is an easy and quick read and has a steady pace. It will suck you in and it will be hard to put down. But if you must you can and will you pick it up again it will be easy to get back into the world and the conflict of the story.Buy this book, you won't regret it! It will be one of the best purchase you will make this year. I promise!

Written in the style of a memoir, the voice of Lady Trent is alternately proper and full of mischief. Although on paper they may sound similar, this has a very different feel from Naomi Novik's Temeraire series as the first-person voice is distictly feminine."A Natural History of Dragons" chronicles Lady Trent's early years and her first expedition, leaving plenty of space for future volumes. Thankfully, the story has a satisfactory conclusion rather than leaving the readers with a cliff-hanger as some first-of-a-series books do. The characterizations of various characters other than Lady Trent (and perhaps her husband) are somewhat two-dimensional and the I felt the pacing of the plot was a bit rushed at the end compared to the rest of the book, but the saucy narrative makes the book hard to put down.As an added bonus, the hardcover copy of the book is absolutely beautiful. The deckled edges combined with text printed in chestnut brown ink immediately evokes the feeling of holding a handwritten journal. Also, Todd Lockwood is amazing as usual and the inner illustrations of various draconic species are stunning and lovingly detailed in an elegant sepia ink. The fanastic cover needs no words. This is definitely a book to purchase as a hard copy.

This is an autobiographical story of the author's visit to a western mining town many years ago. It is easy to read, full of lots of humor and colorful characters. I borrowed a copy to do some research and liked it so much I decided to buy my own copy.

I lived for 15 years in the Silver Valley. My husband worked for both the Sunshine Mine and Bunker Hill Mine. His father worked and retired from the Sunshine. Our family enjoyed many years of living in this mining community, enjoying the natural beauty of the Coeurd'Alene river and camping, fishing and hunting in the area. Fritz Wolff's account of his life in that area and his memories of the mining community/industry were a pleasure to read. He wrote of places and people and things familiar to myself and members of my family. I hope many will want to read this book just because it's an interesting read.

This book describes a young man working in a mine during the summer. He learns the importance of cooperation while taking on one of the most dangerous jobs. He learns from the local populace how close the community is and the friendliness that exists. He also finds the local history is quite colorful and deep in tradition.

I was raised in the community in this book and know the places and faces very well. This is a very fun and comfortable read. The author will warm your heart immediately with the recollections of his youth and how this summer was a turning point for him. He looks back with a twinkle in his eye. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

There have been attempts over the past 3 decades to humanize the mining business. Fritz's tale, seen through the eyes of a college kid 60 years later, is one of the finest. I know or knew several of the people he describes in his narrative; they'll vouch for his authenticity. Thank-you, Fritz. You have ennobled my friends.

One of the best books I've read on mining history in the Northwest. Very personal and funny.

enjoyed reading about Shoshone county Idaho and mining and locals.

Purchased this book bcause of personal interest in the area . I felt it took on an elegantarian view and was a bit arrogant. While the authors descriptions appeared accurate his technical description of the whorehouse/brothel is way of base.

At first when I got this book I was annoyed and a little disappointed. First at the brevity of the book. It is under 100 pages, almost like a pamphlet I thought. Then when I went to read it the language was sophisticated! (WHAT!?!haha) Not at all the type of language I'm accustomed to when reading books talking about self help principles (I generally feel self help books employ a very casual tone and language). Those two things right there meant that I left this book sitting on my nightstand while I tore through many other books surrounding wealth creation, and success.Finally I ran out of those, and in the interim I reluctantly felt I should give this book one more try... I'm SO GLAD I DID! It turns out this book was written in 1910 (woulda helped me had I checked the copyright to begin with-explains the language anyway) OUT OF ALL THE LAW OF ATTRACTION AND SUCCESS BOOKS I'VE READ SO FAR, THIS BOOK IS THE BEST, AND THE ONLY ONE I CARRY EVERYWHERE AND REFER TO DAILY. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. Mind you this was written BEFORE the term "Law of Attraction" was thrown about with regularity. It's fabulous, and gives a concise and clear modus operandi to achieve your dream life, even if your present situation really sucks. Wallace Wattles reminds us that it is a Certain Way of thinking, and living, that produces with certainty the life we create. I will absolutely buy this for everyone I care about.

I think titles like this turn people off, which is a shame! Because there is nothing shallow about this book. It is so deep and rich in content, it would surely benefit anyone who reads it with an open mind. It's one of those books that I'll come back to a few times a year. A classic.

This book changed my life. If you do what the book suggests, you will get rich. I am proof that it works. My dreams became my reality...it all took form around me. I don’t even work anymore. Just do what it says and it will work.

While the information within is priceless, this version of the book was solely for the purpose of capitalizing on Wallace Wattles. This version does not have proper formatting and was sloppily put together. Do not waste money on this version. Margins and chapters are not uniform, no care or time was taken to put this book together. See pictures.

This probably the 8th time I've purchased this book in my life. It was originally a treasured gift to me and I now give it to others. I strongly feel it can be a Life Changer. It was for me.

From organizational skills (you can tell she was a CPA!) to taking back your email, relaxing, sleeping, reducing stress, this book is packed with action items that will guide you to greater focus and creativity. Heck she even tells you how to use those apps! One thing I liked also is that this author not only deals with how to reduce stress BUT what to do if you are in the middle of a downward spiral. After helping the reader to clarify what is important, the author lays out a system that helps for you to know when to deal with different aspects in life and things to do to have more time each day. You will know how to thrive, enrich your life and grow. Loved it!

This is not about autism or an autism support book. This is a self-help book lauding a bunch of apps to purchase that every once in a while drops in a line about 'as a mama of an autistic child - you must be tired- that's why you need to buy this app! It will change your life!' It has a chapter about how to clean out your closet. REALLY?! What does that have to do with my children? The author pushes readers to purchase an email spam filter app, a meditation app, a tasks app, etc, and there is a chapter for each. If you want an organizational self-help book for women who don't know how to use their email and smart phone, get this. Otherwise, get something else.

I loved this book! It was very easy to read and I couldn't put it down. The writing style is very light even when dealing with such a tough issue. Although, it is specific in her case of dealing with autism and can helped parents with autistic children, her knowledge can also be applied to any situation in life. Her 5 steps are very easy to understand. Step 1 – H: Heal by Learning Step 2 – E: Energize Step 3 – A: Anticipate Step 4 – R: Routines Step 5 – T: Thrive.Katherine was so kind to help me with advice from her book to help my brother whose daughter is in the process of getting fully tested to see if she has autism. Many of the symptoms her Kathryn's son exhibits is very similar to my niece who is currently being tested for autism.The author wrote this book from the bottom of her heart to help other parents who are struggling with their autistic children. She has a heart of gold.
