Review

What a fabulous book with so many possibilities. It is a great resource for quilting designs that are doable! Martingale has done a gorgeous job of putting everything together. The spiral binding is a must, and the illustrations are excellent. This is a book I will use not only in my teaching but in my own personal quilting. My plans today are to sew out a few designs and I know I will have a fun time! Keep up the good work Martingale, your products are of the highest quality! --Debby Kratovil, Author/TeacherThis spiral bound reference features 501 quilting motifs selected from more than 26 years of Quiltmaker magazine pages. Get clear guidelines for selecting and transferring motifs, along with handy index cross-reference for motifs by size and style to help you find just the right designs for your quilting needs. A must-have resource for every quilter. --Fons & Porter's Easy Quilts, Spring 2014Now that you have finished appliquéing or piecing your project you are faced with the daunting task of quilting it. Whether or not you quilt a piece yourself or send it out to be quilted, settling on a quilt design that will work with what you have created can be difficult.Generally I have a design in mind but often times I find myself just repeating the same few quilt designs over and over. What I really need is a good source of quilt designs to look through seeking inspiration. The editors of Quiltmaker® Magazine and the folks at Martingale/That Patchwork Place have just come out with a new book featuring 501 Quilting Motifs. In fact it is called 501 Quilting Motifs - Designs for Hand or Machine Quilting. This book offers a marvelous collection of 501 quilting motifs selected from more than 26 years of Quiltmaker® Magazine.Quilters of all skill levels will be able to use these motifs to create their own one-of-a-kind quilts. Some of the different categories of designs include flowers, feathers, vines and leaves, seasonal and holidays, children and teens, geometric designs, and more. While I enjoy leafing through the pages of the book looking at each and every pattern, there is also a quicker way to locate a motif. This book also includes two very useful indexes where each motif is cross-referenced by size and style. Looking to fill a square? Then look in the section titled "squares" and look for the size of your square. Rectangles, triangles and borders are also listed along with their size. Before you even start looking at the motifs you will find a section of clear guidelines with advice on what sort of design would work best with what style of quilt. How to adapt a motif to fit your needs, be it machine or hand quilting, or just changing a motif to fit your particular quilt. Questions about how much quilting your project requires and how to transfer motifs are also addressed. The editors of this book say you will be able to make well over a thousand arrangements featuring the designs found in the book. I believe them! If you like to collect block patterns and quilt patterns then this book is a must have to add to your library. --The Applique Society Newsletter, May/June 2014

"I have half a dozen or so books with quilting motifs to inspire me, but what sets this one apart from the others are the introduction pages, full of guidance on selecting motifs, adapting them to your projects, as well as marking the quilt top, with a handy table of marking tools featuring pros and cons of each one.The quilting motifs are presented by theme: children and teens, flowers, geometric, hearts, etc., each with placement ideas for blocks of varied shapes as well as for borders. My favorite selections are the flowers, with the vines and borders coming in a close second. The index lists motifs by shape and size, expediting the selection task.I have a few tops ready for quilting, and this book has arrived just in time. Its many motifs are making my fingers itch to quilt!"

It's not what I expected. I was looking for something with continuous line quilt designs for machine quilting but the designs are more designed for hand quilting, with a limited number of machine quilting designs. Were you to use this for machine quilting, you'd have tons of threads from all the stops.

If I had to limit myself to only one quilting book of designs . . .this would be the one I'd choose. This book is worth twice what I paid. The instructions for the 501 designs in this book are easy to follow and include line drawings that can be easily traced. The chapter on various feather designs is worth the price of the book alone! There's everything from nature, to classic and even whimsical. The designs aren't only well done, but every single one is applicable and practical and a quilter or beginning quilter won't have any trouble following the designs. When I received my copy, I'd brain tied trying to decide what to do on a border. With the deadline quickly approaching, I ordered this book and knew within 15 minutes of thumbing through the book, exactly what I'd do.Highly recommend this book for quilters of all levels.

I use wax paper to trace patterns from the book. Then I pin the wax paper to the quilt and sew right through it! Works GREAT! Now my hand-quilted designs are more interesting.

A very good book for anyone wanting to expand their hand, machine or longarm stencil library. Many of the patterns can be adapted to continuous design patters for longarm quilting.

When I ordered this book, I expected it to be just a general book. WOW, was I surprised. It's beautifully published, hard bound with spiral center and the contents are well worth the cost. I'm done buying all the templates that I have been for quilting. I've already used it and given several for gifts. Can be used for hand quilting, machine quilting or even could be used for applique patterns.

I tried to use the design with paper and cut out my own, but that didn't work so well. The designs are great and there are so many of them. You just need to find the right product to use to transfer onto your quilt.

Great starter book, great patterns . I just wish I the book was in notebook form so you can take out the pages and return them.

I bought this book because I am just starting to free motion quilt. I really had no idea how to fill a space and this book has given my lots of ideas.
