This is a book about regeneration - about what it means to be "born again." What I appreciated most about this book is its timing. We live in an era when the term "born again" is more often used as a term of derision than a description of God's supernatural work in a human heart. We've all heard it before: Oh, him! He's one of those, ugh, "born agains!" We forget that Jesus coined the term himself - and not George W. Bush. In this book, Piper allows Scripture to define the term, purging it of its 21st century baggage. Needless to say, the content of the book is great, and I wholeheartedly agree with John Piper's exegesis.My main criticism of the book deals with its execution. I found there were a few redundant places, and some other places where I wish he'd say more. But, overall, I recommend it. Especially to people who are curious to know what the Bible has to say about salvation.

The phrase born again is widely misused and misunderstood. In his book Finally Alive, John Piper's goal is to explain the new birth clearly and from the Bible, and he does just that.Dr. Piper gives a complete gospel presentation in 190 pages. His book is divided into sections that answer five questions: What is the new birth, why must we be born again, how does the new birth come about, what are the effects of the new birth, and how can we help others be born again?All are born dead in sin. In order to have eternal life, people must be born again. But how can one who is dead have life? Only by the regenerating power of God. Piper shows that this regeneration, or life, causes faith and belief. Though they appear at the same time and are inseparable, the new life is the cause of the faith, just as fire is the cause of heat. "Spiritual life and faith in Jesus come into being together. The new life makes the faith possible, and since spiritual life always awakens faith and expresses itself in faith, there is no life without faith in Jesus."Belief and faith are not the only fruits of a new birth; Dr. Piper shows that obedience and love also necessarily follow. "Our love for God obeys him freely and joyfully because in the new birth the spell of the world is broken and it loses its power....God himself is at work in the new birth so powerfully that we cannot keep on practicing sin."How does the new birth come about? By the hearing of the gospel. Not the mere hearing of sounds made by certain words, but the hearing of the historical, factual narrative of the Lord Jesus Christ and the truths concerning Him. Because God uses the spoken gospel as a means of regeneration, Christians ought to be encouraged to spread the gospel. And because the new birth results in true and unselfish love, Christians ought to be burdened to spread the gospel. "...What should we be doing to help unbelievers to be born again? The biblical answer is not obscure, and it's not complicated. He is a Biblical thinker and one of the most important Christian authors in the modern era. The sheer amount of pages he has produced in his career is staggering.Finally Alive is one of his newest, and it is a great read for new Christians. Why should we be born again? How are we born again? What is the Holy Spirit's role in salvation? These, and many more questions regarding the new birth, are answered in this short book. I thought the best part of the book was the last section on sharing the gospel, How Can We Help Others Be Born Again? His Ten Encouragements for Gospel-Telling at the end of this section are practical and were the highlight of Finally Alive.Piper's numerous works understandably have a lot of overlap, but I think Finally Alive is one that contains enough new material to make it worth your while, even if you have read much of what he has put out already. This book is geared towards those who would like to know more about being "born again." When people ask me which Piper books I recommend reading, I always recommend The Dangerous Duty of Delight first (this is the basically the cliff notes for Desiring God), and Don't Waste Your Life next. These books are short, readable, and life-changing. While Finally Alive may not be my first recommendation, it is certainly on the short list and would be a great one to pick up.

The new birth is so worthy of a complete book, examining it from all angles - when, why, how, to what end, and more. This is that book. Manifestly scriptural, you can literally watch Piper's exegetical process. A little too academic for those who just want the author to tell them what to think, and a bit repetitive for folks who don't want to savor as they read. But very devotional and beautiful for anyone who's willing to take an unhurried look at the amazing work of God in every genuine believer in Christ Jesus.

About the Author

Bodie attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) and received a BS and MS (in 1996 and 1998 respectively) in mechanical engineering. His specialty was a subset of mechanical engineering based in advanced materials processing, particularly starting powders. He conducted research for his master’s degree through a grant from Lockheed Martin and developed a New Method of Production of Submicron Titanium Diboride. The new process was able to make titanium diboride cheaper, faster and with higher quality. This technology is essential for some nanotechnologies. During his years at SIUC (a secular college), he continued his personal study of biblical apologetics, and even began teaching this topic to a junior high church class. While at SIUC, he was the president of one of the few Christian RSOs (Registered Student Organizations) called Christians Unlimited, and was also an officer in the student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. After earning his master’s degree, he accepted a position of Visiting Instructor at SIUC and started in the fall semester of 1998. He was only 24 years old when he began teaching undergraduate engineering courses at the university. After working for SIUC for a couple of years, Bodie accepted a position as a test engineer through Aerotek Engineering to work for Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria, Illinois at the Peoria Proving Ground. While working at Caterpillar, he taught apologetics to junior high and high school students at his local church, which was a natural outcome considering his love for science, history, and theology. He did this until taking a position with Answers in Genesis in 2003. Currently, Bodie is a speaker, writer, and researcher on a host of topics, including fall of Satan and related events. Bodie was saved when he was nine. As a youngster, he was active in baseball, football and basketball. His hobbies also included hunting and fishing, which are almost unavoidable pursuits while growing up on a farm in Western Illinois.

The Biblical passage relating to the Tower of Babel is a subject with surprisingly few words yet the passage unleashes a morass of unanswered questions for a thoughtful student. I was pleased with the high level overview presented in this study as it touched on every significant question I had. I found the book very readable, the logic easy to follow, and was astonished several times by the insights. After reading and using the book as preparation, I taught this subject to a senior class containing knowledgeable and scholarly Christians. There was a lot of checking of math done on the ages of the patriarchs and cross referencing verses, yet everyone came away with significant new insights on a subject they have read and studied repeatedly over a lifetime. We have a deeper appreciation for, and excitement about, Genesis Chapter 11, largely due to the good writing in "Tower of Babel."

Excellent book! Well written, thought out, with lots of research. Helps to connect many dots about how the world's cultures developed. Also, helps to explain the color variations of mankind and the physical ethnic features of us all. Additionally, I now understand, more than ever before, what "God's chosen people" means when talking about the Hebrew/Jewish nation.

Bodie Hodge brings in the cultural aspects of history often overlooked by those who do not think outside of their own culture and period of history. He makes a good case for the Tower of Babel being square, not round, like many other such ancient structures throughout the world still surviving from ancient times. It contains a lot of exposition on the words used in the Bible and the context of the times. The author makes sense of those times and what is meant. He brings in the legends that have survived by oral tradition throughout the world that show amazing similarities with the biblical accounts. He shows by mapping the movement of people groups (tribes and nations) through the various territories how the descendants of Noah spread throughout the earth. He also debunks the so-called contradictions found in the Bible and explores other mysteries like when the book of Job was written. All in all it is fascinating reading.

This is a fun book on several levels. The chapters are fairly short, but they are full of fun stuff. Many of which you would not expect. Racism, evolution, continental shift, how to read Chinese calligraphy, language shifts, etc. It is almost like reading an encyclopedia. Yet never dry as dust scholarly. The author does shoot down quite a few speculations. But is not afraid to admit when she doesn't have a settled answer in places. I really dug this one.

The research is very well done, relying for the most part on Scripture (as it should). However, it is quite laborious to follow and one may find his/her interest and attention span waning. In the final analysis, one can only marvel at the care Moses took under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to record the generations of individuals and peoples that comprise the Word of God. For those anticipating doing research on the topics surrounding this infamous structure, they would be well advised to begin here. You've done yourself proud by undertaking such an ambitious project.,Mr. Hodge.

This was interesting to me, a lot of interesting information about the original peoples of the Bible. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the Biblical accounts of the history of man on earth and origins of nations in history.

There is a lot of information here about directional spreading of Noah's descendants but everything is general. I was hoping for more detailed information on what names Noah's family had in the languages of the other city-states and empires. Perhaps there is no way of knowing available to us yet.

Possibly the best book on the Tower of Babel. As a history teacher, I've read many papers, books, and articles regarding the histories of the ancient civilzations. This is by far at the top of my list. Not only is it very well researched, it is incredibly insightful to many ideas some may have never thought of. This book comes with my highest recommendation..

While viewing this film, I found myself entranced, often moved to tears, by the sheer beauty of the natural scenes and the photographs of them. This is a film one could never get tired of no matter how many times one watches it.Mr. Brandenburg and his wife/helper condensed their daily experience of the north woods of Minnesota into the taking of just one photograph a day, sometimes not settling on a selection until sundown was almost complete.Now that I've seen this video I am impelled to do three things: (1) take a trip to the wilderness areas of Minnesota; (2) send the DVD to a friend who herself is a photographer in the East; and (3) run, not walk, to the proper Amazon screen to order up quick the accompanying book so I may have a permanent record of these beautiful woods in the photographs, great in their simplicity, of Mr. Brandenburg.

I love this book!!! I first saw this back when it first came out in 1998... finally.. way down the road i thought of it again and was very happy to find that amazon sold it....the photography, the words, everything is very well done. This book is great as a gift, coffee table book, or one to look at whenever you want a peaceful emotional escape:))))

My friend introduced me to this book. I am so inspired that I bought a copy to keep for myself. I am a novice landscape / nature photographer, but I photograph people professionally. There is a lot of pictures shown: big and beautiful. The writing is good, and helps to understand the pictures better. I love that fact that author / photographer only took one picture per day!

Beautiful images with a very interesting story. Highly recommend if you love the beauty in nature and see it from a photographers perspective.

If you're a photograph nut like my wife, you'll love Jim Brandenburg's magic with his camera, shot in Minnesota. An outdoorsman, Brandenburg goes on a one month wilderness trek, where he will shoot only one picture a day. The photos are amazing.

I saw the exhibition of these photos in the 1990s. The book brought back my responses to the exhibit, although the reproduction quality in the book is not as good as the displayed work.

I watch this DVD over and over. The photographs that Jim Brandenburg conceived of and captured..only one shot a day for 90 days are masterpieces...every single one of them..

A beautiful coffee table book that chronicles a "season" in the north woods. You will look at it over and over and guests will love to view it.

Excellent book that provides a wealth of information about Glock pistols, It identifies the different generations, their rarity and why they are rare. All facets of the Glock pistols are presented in a basic chronologic order of manufacturer. I would have liked a complete list of part numbers by model and their interchangeability. All in all a super book for Glock fans and worth every penny!

I felt like it was Christmas, my birthday and all the holidays rolled into one when I won a print copy of Calypso on Instagram from Little Brown a few months ago along with a ton of Sedaris swag - jackpot!! His first collection of essays in almost 5 years! I sat on it, and savored the cover and the early reviews, and finally decided to sit and get lost in it. Only knowing how sad I would be once I had finished.I LOVE every book he's written. I've gone to readings and shows more times than I can count, and I snatch up his books the minute I catch wind there is a new one. And I get way sad when I finish them. Because I devour them. I read them typically in one sitting and can't get enough.This one was devoured in about three hours flat. I know, I know. I should have paced myself. Savored it. But what I love the most about his witty stories - is those that revolve around his family. And this one is chock full of them - once I was in, it was all over. He delves into his deepest, tragic memories of his long passed mother, her alcoholism, his sister Tiffany and her 2013 suicide, his aging father, now in his 90s, and of course his sister Amy (love!) and his other siblings getting older as well. There's plenty of Hugh and snippets of the Hamrick family, and I felt a bit like I was getting the yearly family Christmas update letter of the Sedaris family - but with the good and the bad all mixed in with old memories and fresh ones being made...It's peppered with classic Sedaris social commentary including some relevant political stuff - Trump and Comey are both mentioned, but it is not the focus of the book. Most of the essays take place at the family beach house - The Sea Section (lololol) and recollections of the past are aplenty. Some of my favorite parts revolved around Davids FitBit obsession, his signature stage culottes, "Your English is So Good" a guide to REALLY learning the language, the story of a lipoma tumor, learning about that cover image, and how the title Calypso came to be. I found a lot of animal themes that I loved as well! Stories and references to dogs, turtles, sharks, kittens, a fox, and many more.I read several reviews that Calypso is "dark" but I felt it was more sad and somber, if anything. Not dark at all. As he gets older in life, his observational humor tends to head in that direction - aging, death, sickness, tragedy, tumors! But the sadness comes with a hearty does of one-liners and you will not be disappointed in this one! Dark and depressing - nope. not at all.Calypso is fresh, it's funny, and it was so real and so honest, that Me Talk Pretty One Day has been bumped from my top DS book and Calypso has officially taken the crown.

Some parts of this collection of essays are exquisite, and even I read them twice, but as always with Sedaris, it ‘s a mixed bag. “Your English Is So Good” made me howl. However, for some reason Sedaris has this fascination with people pooping. Such humor is not my cup of tea, so to speak. The essay “I’m Still Standing” made me gag several times (elderly people bepooping themselves in the close quarters of a crowded plane doesn’t tickle my funny bone, I’m sorry); furthermore, poop allusions can be found splattered across the text. Come on, David! That is just so juvenile, or maybe I’m just a squeamish prude. And I do understand that Sedaris is trying to bring out the humor that accompanies the decrepitude and disappointments of getting older and then of getting much older. Of course, most of it is black humor that can be a little depressing, but some of it is just straight-foward humor related to the ironies of life. Overall, I still recommend reading this collection because it contains more gold than dung.

If you love David Sedaris’ writing, I promise that his newest book of stories entitled CALYPSO will make you laugh, perhaps cry a tiny bit, and love him even more (which I didn’t know was possible), and wonder how can a grown man have the imagination of a child (a slightly twisted one) at times, anthropomorphize foxes but not think it necessary for him to be locked up, realize that his siblings share the same language and sick sense of humor and should be crowned as our own American royalty because their humor is so badass, and I am still holding out for a Sedaris family documentary written by David, starring David, directed by David but equally starring his father, sisters, his partner Hugh, and bit roles to Hugh’s mother and sister, as well as his brother Paul’s wife and daughter must be playing Sorry! as they do so well and absolutely get producer credit.If you need me, I’ll be re-reading CALYPSO. When you finish it and want to talk about escapades at his house in Sussex, their family trips to the beach on Emerald Isle, or when he and his sisters go shopping in Tokyo, think of me as your go-to virtual book club member.

This is a collection of essays mostly about family and relationships: between Sedaris and his husband; Sedaris and his siblings; Sedaris and his father. The author has the rare talent to make descriptions and observations about mundane day to day existence, extremely entertaining. Reading Calypso is like eating comfort food. It sits well and you don’t want it to end.Chief among the characters is paterfamilias Sedaris. The Sedaris clan are a close-knit bunch and as Sedaris states: their father waited until late in the game to steal their hearts. Growing up, their Dad was a somewhat detached figure. But with the passage of time and a softening of his edges; he is a lovable curmudgeon who regularly nags the author about looking after his health.Among my favorite passages were Sedaris’s reflections on: middle age, Fitbit obsession, shopping sprees and hanging out with family on vacation. Sales for the board game Sorry may have spiked as a result of his observations about game strategy and the play of his 12-year old “show no mercy” niece.Sedaris muses about his sister Tiffany. She was estranged from the family (what fun she missed out on!) and lived a hard scrabble, tragic life. Also, very sad, is his description of an unfettered public expression of racism that he witnessed as a boy after his family had settled in North Carolina.The only passage that didn’t work for me, was his comparison of swearing and cursing in various cultures. It goes on for way too long and it felt like filler material.Reading Calypso often made me laugh out loud and usually had me grinning. I wholeheartedly agree with one sentiment that Sedaris expressed; I have zero interest in hearing about the dream that you had last night.

I've resold and collected marbles for just over half a year now, so I'm a novice, and while using auction sites, marble identification sites, and collector forums helped me with some of the very basic knowledge, I quickly realized what a hollow online resources are. The marble forums, in particular, where you think you could get advice for the finer details of marble identification, end up being a collection of know-it-alls who don't qualify or source their information at all, and are quickly offended if you question their advice at all, no matter how friendly you are. I've learned to steer clear, or not post my own threads and just try to do very thorough background research in the forums on my own.In reading this book, I've discovered that, indeed, a lot of these experts online are misinformed or didn't provide enough information, or in the right context. This book is unbiased and gives very clear, concise information on marbles and their approximate prices in relation to each other. I've actually discovered now that my Ebay sales mostly mirror the prices given in this guide, more-so than other guides. This guide also gives you some identification guidance as well, but I really like how it says early on that there is no 'official' grading service for marbles, that some marbles are hard if not impossible to specifically identify to a maker or origin, and most people do use their personal experience and educated judgement to sell marbles. This book is only a guide, just like the others, and there is no definitive rule in marble collecting..The marble world is fallible and full of holes, especially to resellers who need to know specifics to maximize their profit for picky collectors. This book provided the most guidance for me that I have found as of yet, and I have purchased two other well-known marble guides now as well. You're best bet to unbiased, experienced advice and guidance is right here. I bought my copy used from a public library and it was in very nice, usable condition, so don't be afraid to buy it used if price is a bit of an issue, just make sure you're getting the most recent edition you can, so the marble prices are as accurate as they can be.And as a final note, don't be afraid to visit antique conventions, where at least a couple marble collectors usually hang out, and sometimes there may even be a marble community in your local area that has regular conventions, flea markets, and swap meets of their own. Hands-on experience is the best way to learn in this field, and when you meet marble enthusiasts face to face, they are much easier going than the online crowd, and can give you much better advice in person than through photos and text.

This is a very nice book from Amazon. It is well planned, very comprehensive & nicely illustrated with many quality photographs. One feature that I especially appreciated is that every photo has a caption directly below it. As I am a beginner to the hobby, at least in regard to what the many varied marbles are called, and to who manufactured what and when, this book really helped me to acquire a good over-view of just those facts. One of the very few ways in which the book might've been improved, is if a few more examples of each company's marbles could've been shown. I do realize that many of these marbles are scarce & that space was limited. Another feature that I liked is that most of the photos were extra-large, likely larger than actual size. The book featured a large typeface as well. This wasn't the first book that I purchased as an introduction to the hobby, but it certainly is the best yet.

I bought a few very large batches of vintage marbles that I knew nothing about. This book has been a life saver, helped me describe marbles in my eBay listings and has taught me a lot.

This does a good explanation of the marble but isn't very easy to actually identify what you may be looking for. The marble history is great however.

Robert Block is an excellent resource for marble collectors!

I expected more topics to be covered. Price guidelines tended to be off and underestimated what the marbles sell for on ebay so I didn't find it all that useful.

Very informative for all marble lovers!

David H. Maister, one of the world's leading authorities on the management of professional service firms, is the author of several successful books, including Managing the Professional Service Firm, True Professionalism, and Practice What You Preach, and coauthor of The Trusted Advisor.Charles H. Green is an executive educator and business strategy consultant to the professional services industry. Charlie has taught in executive education programs for the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, and for Columbia University Graduate School of Business, as well as independently through his firm, Trusted Advisor Associates. His current work centers on the nature of trust-based relationships within organizations, and on the management of professional service firms. Green is a graduate of Columbia and  Harvard Business School. He spent the first twenty years of his career with The MAC Group and its successor, Gemini Consulting, where his roles included strategy consulting (in Europe and the United States), VP Strategic Planning, and a variety of other firm leadership roles. This is a very good book--thoughtful, provocative, instructive. Having said that, there is nothing new here, nothing that hasn't already been said before, in "How to Win Friends and Influence People," by Dale Carnegie. Carnegie's book is the "Bible" on how to build trust, sell the right way, manage effectively, resolve customer and employee disputes, and succeed in a highly-competitive and often hostile world. In the '80s, while working for a large mid-western company and assigned the task of changing the culture of our large retail organization, I must have read a hundred books on selling, negotiating, problem solving, how to get along with the boss, management, dispute resolution, etc., etc., and the basics were all the same, and available in Carnegie's marvelous book. Having said that, I recommend this book. It's pointed, it's filled with example after example on how to build trust--the cement of long-term client relationships--and it gets at the heart of the matter: to be successful, you must learn how to listen effectively, be transparent in your motives, be flexible and open to change, be dedicated and driven, and most of all, be humble. Humility is the key to self-control. Final note: I know people who read book after book looking for some secret message that will enable them to leap over mountains and achieve great success, career satisfaction, and personal achievement. They read books such as this one, miss the timeless lessons being illustrated, and move on to another book. Stop: what you're seeking is right here. This book has all the Dale Carnegie essentials: read it, study it, ponder it, and remember, it's not the destination that counts, it's the journey.

As previous reviewers have noted, Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People” is more comprehensive, more actionable, shorter, and more readable. Nonetheless “Trusted Advisor” has a few good nuggets for those working to build and strengthen professional services relationships.The core of the book is the trust equation:Trustworthiness = (credibility + reliability + intimacy) / (self-orientation)1. Credibility: Listen empathetically for rational and emotional issues to help clients frame the problem then partner with them to craft a detailed solution with carefully managed expectations.2. Reliability: Deliver consistently and excellently on projects, mindful of small touches along the way.3. Intimacy: Communicate as you would with a close family member or friend, sharing and working through professional, and where appropriate, personal issues.4. Other-orientation: Always work (transparently) in your client’s best interest

Sure, be the trusted advisor, someone who never gets anything wrong. LOL The philosophy is good, but quite hard in practice. The other key take away is that you always work for your client's best interest. That's how you build trust. I'd say more important than that is you SHOW how your actions benefit them even at your own expense.Otherwise, they won't even realize how good they have it

I was referred to this book by a colleague. As a consultant, I need to provide the best possible service to my clients. This book is really basic. I found that most of its recommendations were things I already do and have done for years. It provides reliable advice on how to establish and maintain relationships with business associates. It does not provide much advice on how to prioritize and place needed boundaries on client contacts. Good but not great starter book.

This book is right on target. Anyone who desires to develop lasting relationships with clients will want to read this book. From the outset the authors hook the reader by establishing the three basic skills that a trusted advisor must have: (1) earning trust; (2) giving advice effectively; and (3) building relationships. And it gets better as the book progresses. The concept of building trust is brought home in a succinct equation: T = (C + R + I)/S where T is trust, C is credibility, R is reliability, I is intimacy and S is self-orientation.I have found this simple equation to be most useful in gauging the strength of relationships built over the years. It also explains how frustratingly easy it is to lose the trust we've built up. Those who have difficulty maintaining long term solid relationships with friends or clients would do well to check their self-orientation. It is highly likely, if you're honest with yourself, that you are pretty much motivated by your own self-interest and that will come through to clients and friends - regardless of the words you speak or protestations to the contrary.I wish I had come across this book (and the follow-on book by Charles Green, Trust-based Selling) years ago. It would have explained much about the success I had with clients as well as the failures that I suffered. This book will move the successful mentor/coach from the level of conscious incompetent to conscious competent and on to the ultimate goal of unconscious competent.

This book lights a pathway to a service that leaders and business owners need and don't easily find, the wise, honest, and trusted inner circle advisor. We have no shortage of consultants, professional services, and various fiduciary relationships, but there are few on the level that the authors describe. The trusted advisor is grown over time on a foundation of talent experience, and education, but in the end is more than that; more than just a consultant or technician. It is someone who surpasses all of that with a special combination of care, honesty, character, and wisdom. It is something to work to become, but does not come with a framed certificate or degree.
