Decent book. Covers the majority of the basics, found the information to be fairly useful. When I bought this book I read a review from a person who said they never rely on just one book, but always use at least two of them together to try to get the whole picture. I did the same and used this book as well as the Antigua and Barbuda Island guide by Christopher Beale. I found this book to be more informative on the "how the island works" end of things, I found the other a better guide as far as what life is like on the island. Between the two of them and some common sense, we had a great trip.

I couldn't find many guides on Antigua. I ended up buying both this one and the Insight Guide. We used the Rough Guide more as it was organized in a way that I preferred and seemed to contain more information. At the end of the day, it's really not that hard to find your way around Antigua - nothing is terribly far away (it takes ~1/2 hour to drive across the island), the roads are decent, and there aren't too many twists and turns to get lost. There are only a few sights that you really ought to see and the rest of the time is easily filled at beaches (there are an endless number of pristine, undeveloped, private beaches and a few developed ones that seem to attract the masses if you prefer that sort of thing) doing whatever you like to do at beaches. My only complaint is that it would have been nice to have a solid snorkelling guide. For some reason, we had the impression that Antigua has quality snorkelling, but we did not find much of it (and the guides did not help in this regard). It seems there are about three places with reefs offshore that you can boat to, and one reef that you can access from onshore that is decent, but really, snorkelling is not one of the big features of the island and most beaches are sandy (and pristine - really lovely).Anyway, you really can't go wrong visiting this island. I would put some quality thought into what part of the island you would like to stay before you go. It really depends on what you are seeking: if you like to be around touristy crowds, go to St. John's or Jolly Harbour, if you are seeking a different, more private experience, I would head South and/or East.Best of luck!

Have not had a chance to use this book for touring the islands since we won't be traveling to Antigua/Barbuda for another 5 mo., but it appears to be the most comprehensive guide a tourist can buy for these places. If it's anything like the Rough Guide we used for Trinidad/Tobago, it should have the islanders in awe of all the information it contains. Looking forward to carrying all around Antigua & Barbuda when we get there.

This book neglects to mention one important aspect about traveling to Antigua. You must pay $20 USD in cash to get out of the country. When I was there, both ATM machines were out and no one seemed to care.

If you're planning on heading to Antigua and Barbuda and, like me, value a guidebook, then the Rough Guide Directions is essentially your only option within major guidebook circles. Fodors/Frommers/Lonely Planet/Moon/Eyewitness don't bother with destinations so small, so Rough Guide it is unless you're willing to get a "Caribbean" type compendium or you want to try something offbeat. Thankfully, this is a pretty good guidebook, but there are two things you should know before you purchase it...Number 1: this book is *old.* The publishing date says 2007, which means it was probably written in 2006. That's over six years ago now. I suppose the lack of competition doesn't give them a big incentive to publish a new one, but heck I feel leery of guidebooks which are two years old, let alone six. Now it should be mentioned that I didn't actually run into any troubles, with the exceptions of some price disparities, from the old guide--no restaurants that the book recommended had closed, for example. However, I would imagine that some of the restaurants/hotels/etc written up by the book have changed or don't exist any more.Number 2: Antigua can be a confusing place to drive around, and the guidebook could do a better job with directions. There are some maps in the book of course, but I would recommend picking up a bigger one at a car rental agency (assuming you're driving) because I had significant trouble getting around. The book isn't terrible with its directions, and by and large I did find everything I was trying to reach, but often there was a lot of frustration before getting there.Other than those two issues, however, this is a nice guide. Lots of pretty pictures, clear organization, good recommendations, etc. I am happy I purchased it for my trip. As long as you know its limitations going in, I think you'll be fine.

This book was well written, organized, and designed. The maps throughout the book were informative and helpful. (Although we did not use them for driving, just for orienting ourselves on the island and for figuring out what to do and where, we used taxis). Nice photos and clear and easy to understand system of listing places to stay, eat and things to do.Almost all of the prices are outdated, so our trip was even more expensive than we accounted for. And some store times were outdated, but that kind of stuff is to be expected.Whenever I travel I usually buy two books about my destination to be able to compare and see different points of view. And although this book was by far the more comprehensive of the two, the other book Antigua and Barbuda: Island Guide by Christopher Beale did have more emphatic personal recommendations which I found useful. Although Beale's book had faults, I found that the combination of the two books to be complementary.

After months of working time and again to create my own John Owen megabook containing all of Owen's books (and never finishing it), someone else has done it. And it's really great from the content end of things. A gigantic amount of writings have been crammed into a single Kindle file, complete with working tables of contents. At $2.99 my design qualms pale when you consider the value. Nevertheless, my complaints are as follows: (1) Tables of Contents in the front of the book have a light font color so that they are difficult to read. [See note at bottom of review] (2) Page breaks were not put at the ends of chapters and books. (3) Footnotes are hard to distinguish from main text. Formatting them in a smaller size would have been helpful.Ignore my qualms. This is a great bargain. It is clear to me that when it comes to this collection, content went before design, but that's completely fine. After all, these are virtually the complete works of one of the greatest Puritan theologians. The text is accurate and does not appear to have been OCR'd. When you consider that this is a hundred times cheaper than the print editions, you realize what a great collection it is.[I want to note something. It has been about a week since I purchased this ebook, and the strange colored Table of Contents which I complained about in my earliest version of the review has changed back to the traditional black font. I really don't know what caused it, but it was likely something on my end of things. All that to say, the Table of Contents is just fine, and I apologize for any confusion.]

John Owen was a professor of divinity at Oxford during the 17th century when England was in upheaval between Anglicans and Puritans. Owen represented the best of Puritan theory and his works have survived the test of time, and are still read today. His treatise on the Death of Death is still an Easter masterpiece of what the resurrection means for every Christian. More people should read Owen, but up till now his books were either hard to get or expensive. Here is the opportunity to study one of the great Christian theologians since the Reformation in an inexpensive form. Highly recommended.

If you want to grow in your faith in the grace of God that is yours in Christ Jesus, read old dead guys! Owen has the very best work these days, as few really preach on sin , let alone how to handle sin the way God intends.....After all, He is the One offended! A must-read for any serious student and follower of Jesus Christ!

I purchased this item so I could use the text -to- speech option which was promised in the description. Buyer BEWARE if you want this option it is NOT available. I had worked with Amazon techs on this and they promised a refund which I have never received. Otherwise it's a great way to purchase the Works of Owen, though his work on Apostasy is missing. I would recommend the other complete Works of Owen which I have purchased and am happy with.

I am presently reviewing the Kindle e-book by John Owen titled Pneumatologia (which I previously purchased). That work is one of the twenty-two books which is included in this collection. I have only recently purchased this present Kindle e-book titled, The Essential Works of John Owen. Once I finished the Pneumatologia entry I hope to publish my review on that book. But based upon that book and those Kindle e-books which I have previously read and the massive content of The Essential Works of John Owen entry herein reviewed, I would like to submit a couple of quotes from the Pnematologia e-book (since it is included in this twenty-two book entry) to encourage the purchase and reading of this present masterpiece. The reason I want to submit this review now is so that those who contemplate purchase of The Essential Works of John Owen would save themselves from purchasing some of the entries included herein which also are available as single book entries. To give a flavor of The Essential Works of John Owen, I submit the following quotes from the Pneumatologia entry:"First, The nature and being of God is the foundation of all true religion and holy religious worship in the world. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Odelia, the reporter for the small town paper. Along with her cats Max and Dooley they strive to solve the murder of a famous singer. In the mean time they are trying to prove that Chase, the hunky cop who has moved to town, was set up as a bad cop, because he had destructive information on the Commissioner. Another cantputdownable must read.

So cat relations seem very similar to human relations. Harriet is Dooley's lost love. And Brutus' lovey dovey. The attitudes between the cats is very humanistic. I can't wait to see how things develop in the people world between Odelia and Chase. I'm also curious to see where things land between the cats. I love that Odelia, her mom and grandmother can talk to the cats. For now, on to the next book in the series.

Odelia Poole, Max the cat's human that talks to cat's has an interview, she is a reporter, with JG George a famous 60's pop stat. She along with Max find him dead in his pool. Get ready to go into conversations with cat's helping Odelia solve the murder. A good change from your usual mystery!

Hard to imagine cats talking but among other they communicate some how and as a cat owner I do communicate with my girls just not verbally. Odelia the reporter and her cats make for a cute read.

Absolutely enjoyed this book. The cats are hilarious. They join forces to help their owners catch the murderer. Looking forward to more from this author. This is the second, be sure to grab the first in this series also.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Bringing in a couple of loving cats to the mix was a little strange but I finally got used to them. Now I want to see if all will be in the next story including Clarisse. I am hoping that she will find something better for herself.

If you are a stickler for good grammar, proper punctuation, correct vocabulary, and careful proofreading, this series is not for you, unless you can temporarily set your standards aside. If you can, then this series is an enjoyable lighthearted romp. The cat characters far outshine the humans.

The second book in a series. I hope this series is a long-lasting one! I'm eagerly awaiting the third book in the series. Run, don't walk to get the first two books, if you haven't. Enjoy the laughs the cats create.

If you look thru my other reviews WWII USN and submarine books are a favorite reading subject for me. After having read many and having something to compare to I am sorry to say that I would rate this book as an average read at best. Although it covers a subject that I enjoy its just not very engaging as a written work. Like a number of books written on a ships history it begins with an introduction to the role of submarines, the stresses of surving on one and some of the main officers. Once the crew is assembled and trained the book basically covers the experiences of the sub and its sailors patrol by patrol til the wars end. However a good book cannot rely on just that but needs an author to expertly weave all of these experiences together into a single interesting narrative but in my opinion that is not achieved. The chapters regarding the patrols are a bit tedious and often times there are a couple of pages in a row devoted to just explaining what the submarine did down to the minute during an attack. 1141- took final bearing, 1142 shot first torpedo etc. Alot of passages are hardly more interesting than a skippers patrol report. Chapters devoted to crews experiences in between patrols are mostly mundane. There are a few episodes such as a sailor getting arrested to provide some color but for the most part it just talks about them drinking beer or servicing the boat. If you've read other sub books I dont think you'll read about anything particullary new. The part of the book that shines the most is the pages describing the Puffers long submergence and depth charging on one of her first patrols. Here the authors pulls together several former sailors experiences and how they felt the crew was affected which I thought was interesting. Typically sub histories will characterize the crew of the Puffer as being deeply shaken by that experience but that does not seem to be the case. All in all I would only suggest this book to someone who has to read them all otherwise if you are looken for a similar type of book that is truly a five star I would suggest Ostlunds Find Em, Chase Em, Sink Em. Great subject but the writing is flat and very pricey.

like the others, i was quite reluctant and hesitant to shell-out $45 for a softcover book. however having a lifelong penchant (and weakness) for written accounts on WW2 submarines i bit the proverbial torpedo and have now just finished reading this fine WW2 history of the USS PUFFER. FIVE STARS all the way and a successful war patrol (clean sweep! tie the broom to the periscope shears!)! the chapters are well-segmented from the construction inception, through each successive war patrol, to final de-commissioning and disposition. ironically the bulk of the text are not of the author's...but verbatim WAR PATROL REPORTS...and several inclusions of former PUFFER crewmember veteran's oral histories, anecdotes, and especially rather lengthy FPO letters home written by an PUFFER officer (to his wife during the war). besides the postwar memoirs (by actual veterans) and or history texts (by noted historians), books of this ilk, are usually the product of a baby boomer seeking to learn more of his/her father's past WW2 service. this work is no different, as the author attended several PUFFER reunions, interviewed PUFFER crewmembers, researched the archives, etc etc in his quest to understand his father's role in the Silent Service. having amassed reams of research material...a book was a natural outcome (otherwise his oral history interviews would have never come to light). what aspect i especially appreciated was the overall narrative of a WW2 boat that was not a headline glamor maru-killing ace sub, but rather an unsung workhorse representative of most of the WW2 submarines (it just happened his father served on her). all former PUFFER crewmembers including their WW2 USN serial numbers are listed which for me renders this work an invaluable resource index. the author's obsessive effort to disclaim the longheld notion that PUFFER's crew was completely disbursed after the horrifying first war patrol could have been abbreviated as well as the sections on physiologic & psychologic aspects of life aboard a diesel boat. one minor error: enlisted submarine personnel did not wear the silver TWIN DOLPHINS qualification badge during WW2 (it was instituted in 1956)...instead wore a TWIN DOLPHINS cuff striker on their liberty blues and or summer whites. during WW2 commissoned officers were the only ones authorized the wear the GOLD TWIN DOLPHINS quals badge. all submarine personnel, enlisted and officer, were allowed to wear the COMBAT PATROL PIN insignia (a combat battle star was added for each patrol deemed successful by the higher-ups). also interestingly enough, there is usually scant mention as to the real reason behind the (faulty) magnetic imploder (on the fishes)..as the author stated it was thought more effective to explode underneath the ship as to 'break the keel, ie., backbone'...when in truth it was devised to originally sink enemy man-of-wars which tend to have a thick armor belt which neutralized most contact exploders (that was the theory anyhow). for all WW2 submarine historians, aficionados, readers, etc...this book is a definite affirmative.

The USS Puffer was built in my hometown, Manitowoc, Wisconsin and that's what initially piqued my interest. I hesitated at first because the book seemed a bit pricey for a paperback but I assure you it's a bargain. The writing style draws the reader into the book and onto the submarine. You'll be given not only an excellent view of each engagement fought by PUFFER but also a glimpse into the personalities of the various men who served in her. You'll learn how the submarines were built and how the citizens of Manitowoc felt about the young sailors who came to town and sailed the boats off to war. The book is a great read and well worth your investment. It's a keeper.

This is a book about regeneration - about what it means to be "born again." What I appreciated most about this book is its timing. We live in an era when the term "born again" is more often used as a term of derision than a description of God's supernatural work in a human heart. We've all heard it before: Oh, him! He's one of those, ugh, "born agains!" We forget that Jesus coined the term himself - and not George W. Bush. In this book, Piper allows Scripture to define the term, purging it of its 21st century baggage. Needless to say, the content of the book is great, and I wholeheartedly agree with John Piper's exegesis.My main criticism of the book deals with its execution. I found there were a few redundant places, and some other places where I wish he'd say more. But, overall, I recommend it. Especially to people who are curious to know what the Bible has to say about salvation.

The phrase born again is widely misused and misunderstood. In his book Finally Alive, John Piper's goal is to explain the new birth clearly and from the Bible, and he does just that.Dr. Piper gives a complete gospel presentation in 190 pages. His book is divided into sections that answer five questions: What is the new birth, why must we be born again, how does the new birth come about, what are the effects of the new birth, and how can we help others be born again?All are born dead in sin. In order to have eternal life, people must be born again. But how can one who is dead have life? Only by the regenerating power of God. Piper shows that this regeneration, or life, causes faith and belief. Though they appear at the same time and are inseparable, the new life is the cause of the faith, just as fire is the cause of heat. "Spiritual life and faith in Jesus come into being together. The new life makes the faith possible, and since spiritual life always awakens faith and expresses itself in faith, there is no life without faith in Jesus."Belief and faith are not the only fruits of a new birth; Dr. Piper shows that obedience and love also necessarily follow. "Our love for God obeys him freely and joyfully because in the new birth the spell of the world is broken and it loses its power....God himself is at work in the new birth so powerfully that we cannot keep on practicing sin."How does the new birth come about? By the hearing of the gospel. Not the mere hearing of sounds made by certain words, but the hearing of the historical, factual narrative of the Lord Jesus Christ and the truths concerning Him. Because God uses the spoken gospel as a means of regeneration, Christians ought to be encouraged to spread the gospel. And because the new birth results in true and unselfish love, Christians ought to be burdened to spread the gospel. "...What should we be doing to help unbelievers to be born again? The biblical answer is not obscure, and it's not complicated. The answer is: Tell people the good news of Christ from a heart of love and a life of service."Piper's love for the glory of Christ is evident in Finally Alive. So is his love for people. His chapters are clear and concise. At times they are convicting, and at times they are comforting. Finally Alive will benefit those who want a better understanding of the new birth and the effects that it should have in the life of a believer. It will also motivate and better equip those who want to share the gospel. Regardless of where you are at--unbelief, new belief, or mature belief--I recommend this book to you.

John Piper's work on eldership, salvation, and practical theology have shaped my beliefs as much as any other modern pastor. He is a Biblical thinker and one of the most important Christian authors in the modern era. The sheer amount of pages he has produced in his career is staggering.Finally Alive is one of his newest, and it is a great read for new Christians. Why should we be born again? How are we born again? What is the Holy Spirit's role in salvation? These, and many more questions regarding the new birth, are answered in this short book. I thought the best part of the book was the last section on sharing the gospel, How Can We Help Others Be Born Again? His Ten Encouragements for Gospel-Telling at the end of this section are practical and were the highlight of Finally Alive.Piper's numerous works understandably have a lot of overlap, but I think Finally Alive is one that contains enough new material to make it worth your while, even if you have read much of what he has put out already. This book is geared towards those who would like to know more about being "born again." When people ask me which Piper books I recommend reading, I always recommend The Dangerous Duty of Delight first (this is the basically the cliff notes for Desiring God), and Don't Waste Your Life next. These books are short, readable, and life-changing. While Finally Alive may not be my first recommendation, it is certainly on the short list and would be a great one to pick up.

The new birth is so worthy of a complete book, examining it from all angles - when, why, how, to what end, and more. This is that book. Manifestly scriptural, you can literally watch Piper's exegetical process. A little too academic for those who just want the author to tell them what to think, and a bit repetitive for folks who don't want to savor as they read. But very devotional and beautiful for anyone who's willing to take an unhurried look at the amazing work of God in every genuine believer in Christ Jesus.

About the Author

Bodie attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) and received a BS and MS (in 1996 and 1998 respectively) in mechanical engineering. His specialty was a subset of mechanical engineering based in advanced materials processing, particularly starting powders. He conducted research for his master’s degree through a grant from Lockheed Martin and developed a New Method of Production of Submicron Titanium Diboride. The new process was able to make titanium diboride cheaper, faster and with higher quality. This technology is essential for some nanotechnologies. During his years at SIUC (a secular college), he continued his personal study of biblical apologetics, and even began teaching this topic to a junior high church class. While at SIUC, he was the president of one of the few Christian RSOs (Registered Student Organizations) called Christians Unlimited, and was also an officer in the student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. After earning his master’s degree, he accepted a position of Visiting Instructor at SIUC and started in the fall semester of 1998. He was only 24 years old when he began teaching undergraduate engineering courses at the university. After working for SIUC for a couple of years, Bodie accepted a position as a test engineer through Aerotek Engineering to work for Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria, Illinois at the Peoria Proving Ground. While working at Caterpillar, he taught apologetics to junior high and high school students at his local church, which was a natural outcome considering his love for science, history, and theology. He did this until taking a position with Answers in Genesis in 2003. Currently, Bodie is a speaker, writer, and researcher on a host of topics, including fall of Satan and related events. Bodie was saved when he was nine. As a youngster, he was active in baseball, football and basketball. His hobbies also included hunting and fishing, which are almost unavoidable pursuits while growing up on a farm in Western Illinois.

The Biblical passage relating to the Tower of Babel is a subject with surprisingly few words yet the passage unleashes a morass of unanswered questions for a thoughtful student. I was pleased with the high level overview presented in this study as it touched on every significant question I had. I found the book very readable, the logic easy to follow, and was astonished several times by the insights. After reading and using the book as preparation, I taught this subject to a senior class containing knowledgeable and scholarly Christians. There was a lot of checking of math done on the ages of the patriarchs and cross referencing verses, yet everyone came away with significant new insights on a subject they have read and studied repeatedly over a lifetime. We have a deeper appreciation for, and excitement about, Genesis Chapter 11, largely due to the good writing in "Tower of Babel."

Excellent book! Well written, thought out, with lots of research. Helps to connect many dots about how the world's cultures developed. Also, helps to explain the color variations of mankind and the physical ethnic features of us all. Additionally, I now understand, more than ever before, what "God's chosen people" means when talking about the Hebrew/Jewish nation.

Bodie Hodge brings in the cultural aspects of history often overlooked by those who do not think outside of their own culture and period of history. He makes a good case for the Tower of Babel being square, not round, like many other such ancient structures throughout the world still surviving from ancient times. It contains a lot of exposition on the words used in the Bible and the context of the times. The author makes sense of those times and what is meant. He brings in the legends that have survived by oral tradition throughout the world that show amazing similarities with the biblical accounts. He shows by mapping the movement of people groups (tribes and nations) through the various territories how the descendants of Noah spread throughout the earth. He also debunks the so-called contradictions found in the Bible and explores other mysteries like when the book of Job was written. All in all it is fascinating reading.

This is a fun book on several levels. The chapters are fairly short, but they are full of fun stuff. Many of which you would not expect. Racism, evolution, continental shift, how to read Chinese calligraphy, language shifts, etc. It is almost like reading an encyclopedia. Yet never dry as dust scholarly. The author does shoot down quite a few speculations. But is not afraid to admit when she doesn't have a settled answer in places. I really dug this one.

The research is very well done, relying for the most part on Scripture (as it should). However, it is quite laborious to follow and one may find his/her interest and attention span waning. In the final analysis, one can only marvel at the care Moses took under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to record the generations of individuals and peoples that comprise the Word of God. For those anticipating doing research on the topics surrounding this infamous structure, they would be well advised to begin here. You've done yourself proud by undertaking such an ambitious project.,Mr. Hodge.

This was interesting to me, a lot of interesting information about the original peoples of the Bible. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the Biblical accounts of the history of man on earth and origins of nations in history.

There is a lot of information here about directional spreading of Noah's descendants but everything is general. I was hoping for more detailed information on what names Noah's family had in the languages of the other city-states and empires. Perhaps there is no way of knowing available to us yet.

Possibly the best book on the Tower of Babel. As a history teacher, I've read many papers, books, and articles regarding the histories of the ancient civilzations. This is by far at the top of my list. Not only is it very well researched, it is incredibly insightful to many ideas some may have never thought of. This book comes with my highest recommendation..

While viewing this film, I found myself entranced, often moved to tears, by the sheer beauty of the natural scenes and the photographs of them. This is a film one could never get tired of no matter how many times one watches it.Mr. Brandenburg and his wife/helper condensed their daily experience of the north woods of Minnesota into the taking of just one photograph a day, sometimes not settling on a selection until sundown was almost complete.Now that I've seen this video I am impelled to do three things: (1) take a trip to the wilderness areas of Minnesota; (2) send the DVD to a friend who herself is a photographer in the East; and (3) run, not walk, to the proper Amazon screen to order up quick the accompanying book so I may have a permanent record of these beautiful woods in the photographs, great in their simplicity, of Mr. Brandenburg.

I love this book!!! I first saw this back when it first came out in 1998... finally.. way down the road i thought of it again and was very happy to find that amazon sold it....the photography, the words, everything is very well done. This book is great as a gift, coffee table book, or one to look at whenever you want a peaceful emotional escape:))))

My friend introduced me to this book. I am so inspired that I bought a copy to keep for myself. I am a novice landscape / nature photographer, but I photograph people professionally. There is a lot of pictures shown: big and beautiful. The writing is good, and helps to understand the pictures better. I love that fact that author / photographer only took one picture per day!

If you're a photograph nut like my wife, you'll love Jim Brandenburg's magic with his camera, shot in Minnesota. An outdoorsman, Brandenburg goes on a one month wilderness trek, where he will shoot only one picture a day. The photos are amazing.

I saw the exhibition of these photos in the 1990s. The book brought back my responses to the exhibit, although the reproduction quality in the book is not as good as the displayed work.

I watch this DVD over and over. The photographs that Jim Brandenburg conceived of and captured..only one shot a day for 90 days are masterpieces...every single one of them..

A beautiful coffee table book that chronicles a "season" in the north woods. You will look at it over and over and guests will love to view it.
