Could be 5 stars, could be less. Here's the thing, if you were ever played and enjoyed any kind of Dungeons and Dragons, so much of this book will be massively enjoyable. More, the story has some very novel idea and has lots of laugh out loud humor. These kinds of readers will give this a 5 stars. If you never played D&D or similar game, this book will at least in part go right over your head. Those folks will give it a 3 or so.Lastly, some language is just as I remember in college and my days in the Marine Corps. Everything started or ended with F*** and talking some pretty harsh smack was common. Again, this is some great nostalgia, plus really funny if you can get into that mindset of speaking. (Again, this can make it a 5 star book of fun.) If you have neither the nostalgia to relate to or something against swearing, the book will be several stars lower.I really enjoyed this book. A trip down memories lane linked with a good story. For me, 5 stars. But then everyone like me will give it 5 stars for the reasons I point out above. I'm going with 4 stars because that is how it will shake out with readers over all. Perhaps not a love or hate it kind of book, just one that either scores high or doesn't.

It's okay. Good content, though a little bit slower-paced than the first book. Main complaints include serious spelling/grammar mistakes to the point I got the impression the author & editor just didn't care to check for or correct them, worst example being a full page with bad formatting that caused most words to be cut off at the first letter and moved to the next line; also no page numbers printed at all. This wouldn't have been as much of a problem if I hadn't forgotten it on a truck dashboard over a weekend, causing exposure to extreme heat to soften the binding glue, causing the pages to come out and half the book to fall out of the binding upon opening. It's near impossible to try and reorganize the pages now without page numbers, which is very disappointing because I was almost finished reading it. Other than these issues, some funny jokes, decent character development, and a good dose of D&D culture if you're in a situation where you can't play for a period of time like me.

I bought the audio version and giggled and belly laughed all the way through this book! I listened to it while trying to clean house but had to stop and laugh so many times... That was the best time I have ever had house cleaning! I also listened to it at night before bed and couldn't stop. This book is addictive. Slapstick funny, childish, crazy, things you would never expect, but hilarious just the same!These gamers were magical sucked into a game by the game master. Now they are trapped. They are the characters they played in the game. Orc, half-elf, etc. They meet up with others that the evil game master sent over. The story is so great! I am giggling thinking about the story!I bought all four books and can't wait to hear the next book. I usually never buy audio because it takes so long to 'read' because I read so fast I could have several books read in the same time but the voices that are used in this book is so funny in themselves it just adds to it. I adore these books, esp. on audio! I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. These books are probable made for adult males that play D&D but I have never played games and I am a 60 yr old woman and laughing at this silly book. Funny as hell! I think this one was better than book one!

Another great book by Robert.I found myself reading 'over' the jokes and swear words because the story was drawing me in even further than the first. I was hoping this was going to happen and it did. We see more character development, more relationship building, and well, I'm almost making it sound boring when it wasn't. It was just plain awesome.I felt we lost the obvious 'antagonist' but the conflict was still high so I didn't miss that too much. There may have been more opportunity with the Four Horseman but I loved the Millard scenes. Some serious ethical issues were just blown off. Great. Get sick of reading about the pros and cons. Cooper is quickly becoming a favourite but all the characters are great.I'm undecided about the whole 'horse' idea but since another character doesn't like it either, it's all okay — again, clever writing. It works so don't change it.I'd like to see a bit more Chaz development. I think he actually adds a different dimension to the story. But book 3 has been written so I'll have to wait to see if there is more on him. I have already bought it...Again, another great ending and again, poor Tim.

If you have a sense of humor you will like this entire series. Some say the writing is juvenile because it uses potty humor - i disagree, i found the plot twists to be genuine "twists" and yet believable (as far as character development and motivations). Masturbation, sexual innuendos, swearing, and deification are all located within the text and story line - some is gratuitous, but all is within the consistency of who the characters are and how they would act. Using innuendos does not make writing sophomoric unless it has not purpose within the story - that is not the case here. If you are easily offended then you should probably stay away from reading fantasy stories in the first place. Review for books 1-5.

I loved the book! I was on the USS Merrill during Operation Praying Mantis, I was young and only knew the partial stories behind the USS Stark and USS Samuel B Roberts. It was good to finally read the entire story and timeline of events. I do remember the morning of the Sassan bombardment like yesterday. I was in combat sitting at the SLQ-32 and another EW was on the upper deck manning the chaff station said that the oil platform was firing at us but the rounds were falling short. At this point the Merrill had not fired, I can't say if the other ships had or had not at this time, the book stated we fired first. Once we did fire we took that gun out with one well placed round. I also remember the commodores staff calling each ship on the radio and asking for how many rounds from each weapon they had on board. When they asked us for how many rounds of CIWS and we told them we didn't have one there was a long pause. I am sure they were thinking what are you doing in the gulf without CIWS. The Merrill had been the test platform for the Tomahawk and had yet to go into the yards to be fitted with CIWS.

I was safe aboard the USS Enterprise in the Gulf of Oman during OPM. My most vivid memory was pulling into Seattle Washington for fleet week, pick up Tigers and finally head home to Alameda. My most vivid recollection was seeing the USS Wainwright and USS McCormick (Sorry if it's misspelled.) tied up and meeting the actual crewmen in a bar. They didn't talk much about almost sharing the same fate as the Stark. In hindsight almost 30 years later I am certain their thoughts have fomented. I think they were awarded a Combat Action. If you served on the Wainwright I would love to hear your story. Please share.

If you are looking for a discussion of U.S. foreign policy in the Persian Gulf from 1986-1990 this is a very good book to have on the shelf. While technically a discussion of US-Iranian relations, this touches upon many issues that still resonate with all the Gulf nations to this day. Wise definitely did his homework and, almost as important, tells you where to find his documentation. Unlike many historical books, Wise does not try to cram every detail of what he found on every issue, but weaves them into the larger storyline. Highly recommended, especially if a person is interested in modern damage control and/or weapons effects on naval vessels.

Someone who was involved in the hostilities with Iran during the 1987-88 period recommended this book to me, and I'm very glad he did. This well researched fairly handled story of the tensions, mistakes and victories of the largely unknown skirmishes between Iran and the United States during the Iraq-Iran War stands out as an early indicator of some of the problems we face yet today. It also serves as a warning that gutting our military, as has occurred during supposedly peaceful times, and as was done with our minesweepers and response teams after the Vietnam War, can come back to haunt us, as we are seeing again in the Iraq War today. Some peace dividend, huh? Thank God for the brave SEALS and Commanders who used creative ingenuity and sheer guts and skill to outfit and place an oil service barge named Hercules where it would do the most good - striking out of the darkness at the minelayers Iran had denied existed. This is not a pretty story; mistakes at the command level, errors at the presidential level. Ships sunk, Sailors dying. A commercial jet accidently shot down in flames. But this is a story which must be told. It showcases the fear of young soldiers and sailors in harm's way for the first time, the raw kids trained but inexperienced, who see firsthand the hatred of people they don't know. Then there's the grizzled pro, the hardened hero who understands duty, the guy who expects to earn his Hazardous Duty Pay and doesn't ask for reward -- just completion of mission.INSIDE THE DANGER ZONE provides a useful and informative backdrop for the Persian Gulf conflicts of today. Harold Lee Wise has done an outstanding job preparing INSIDE THE DANGER ZONE. Hopefully, this country learned some lessons and will not repeat its mistakes.

Finally, a balanced review of events of those turbulent days. I appreciate the author's development of context when using my citations that reveal the fallacies of the biased articles written about the USS Vincennes incident in national and professional publications by other lesser-stared reviewers of this book.

Harold Wise's account is based on in-depth historical research reinforced by interviews with many of us who were there as participants. At the time, some of the moving parts Wise reveals in this book made little sense to us. He brilliantly brings all those seemingly unrelated parts together, connecting the dots into a coherent historical account that reads like a novel. It is very accurate, engaging, and as fair a representation of situation as I think is possible. I'm grateful to the author for undertaking this work which is important not only to me personally but to all would seek to understand the Tanker Wars.

With exception to one recount, everything inside is spot on accurate. I was stationed on board the USS Coronado AGF-11 in 1988 and remember all of this very fondly. Harold Lee Wise clearly took careful steps in acquiring the stories and information behind this period, especially those coming from Adm. Bersen, Adm. Less and even Gen. Crist. Maybe I was a little less patient with this book, I believe it is a fine product, my problem is I can see the words but if I never here the way they actually sound when pronounced by a native, I will never know if I'm saying anything right. Now if there is a audio sound tract I can purchase it will give the book a five stare raying.

From the great reviews and the book description, I thought this book would come with good subway maps, at LEAST. If you need a guidebook to help you around, don't bother with this book. I am quite disappointed.

Not really a huge choice of travel books on the Ukraine so this one serves my purpose. It's easy to read and contains the information I require.

I went as a Peace Corps Volunteer...a university teacher there. I wasn't a 22-year-old. I was going on 80 and had traveled a lot, even around the world, and alone. I was quite savvy in getting around. Oh, I armed myself with a guide book (not this one!). Plus a short "culture" book. I wasn't going as a two-week tourist. I was going to live and work and observe in that puzzling country for a full hitch of 27 months. Those two books were okay. They helped me as I traveled around that vast country on my bits of time off.Then one day at Headquarters in Kyiv I was looking through the "leave one / take one" bookcase in the Volunteers' lounge. And I stumbled on Linda Hodges' book! In five minutes I realized it was far better than the two books I had. And snatched it. From that moment it was always in my bag when I took off.I still have it. That was the second edition. This is the fifth edition, and just out. Her first one was excellent, I'm sure. Her second was terrific. Well, this one beats it. I can tell that she has polished and polished it, so to speak, making it as comprehensive as possible, as topical as possible, as helpful as possible, and most of all, as objective as possible.Ukraine split off from the U.S.S.R. in that unbelievable year of 1991. So her first edition must have been one of the first significant ones on the market.Being objective is always a huge challenge, even for a journalist, whose professional mandate is objectivity! One's own culture, own upbringing, own beliefs and predilections can jump in and distort. I hate to use that word, distort. But you know what I mean: may warp, or fall short, or mis-explain.She is a second-generation Ukrainian living in Iowa, the child of immigrants. She is a food and travel writer. She became interested in Ukraine because it was her ancestral homeland. She found the place so interesting that that is how she got the bug to write about it. And what a bug that has been!I understand totally because I have the identical background, but French. This is why I appreciate her challenge all the more.She loves Ukraine. That comes through clearly. That's why she went there the first time, then returned. So, joyfully she tells us all about the impressive culture and inbred talents and attainments of Ukrainians, and they are a great many. Their bravery and tenacity and even heroism in getting through the horror of Sovietism, and then setting off on the perilous transition to real democracy and dog-eat-dog free enterprise.In such capitalism you have to compete! And that isn't easy when you've lived for decades in a dictatorial and often indifferent totalitarian society that tells you every move you can make, and every move you must not make!Despite this understandable fascination that she has for the country, she is careful about pointing out the many problems of modern Ukraine. She laments the often ineffective leadership. The pervasive scheming and corruption. The nasty inflation. The thorny problems of effecting changes that are proper and right and correct. The struggle to get with it. She is indeed objective.But as she notes, and as I have observed for myself, Ukraine is making impressive progress on many fronts. It is true: by and large the Ukrainians are good and endearing people. Talented and hard-working. Creative and principled.The land is beautiful and fertile. The economy has robust elements based on skilled manufacturing and world-famous agriculture. When I went there, I thought it might have half a dozen institutions of higher learning. It has hundreds! Its literacy is as high as ours. It has fine libraries and symphony orchestras and splendid museums.Its villages are charming. Its countryside offers countless Kodak moments. Its great cities can rival many great cities in the world. I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my niece, but I read it (translating into Spanish) to my Cuban grandparents, who were truly delighted by it. The story is fun, the pictures are beautiful, and it gives you a snapshot of the familial bonds and culture of Cuba!

Beautiful, vivid illustrations, the words so reflective of Cuban life.

A little boy and his family are headed to his cousin's zero year birthday celebration. To get there, they must convince the old family automobile, Cara Cara, to make the trip. Cara Carr has been fixed multiple times through trial and error and creativity, but she still runs. Like many of the other old cars the boy sees on the streets of Havana.Definitely read the author's note in the back of the book about why Havana is so full of old cars and how people work to keep them going much longer than people in wealthier cultures. An interesting look at how one person's trash is another's treasure, and the power of ingenuity. It should also make readers pause and think about their own materialism. Kids who like cars and tinkering should LOVE this. I'm not super into cars but I appreciate the message Engle intended and I know this will find an audience. I also like the peek into a foreign culture. The illustrations are quite something too and make sure you read the illustrator's note on why the cars won't look 100% authentic.

A boy and his family get their old car running and head off to Havana for a celebration in this book with startlingly beautiful illustration and rich text. You will come away from this book with a deep appreciation for the stubborn persistence of Cuba's people and the lush beauty of their land.

All the Way to Havana by Margarita Engle, is a realistic fictional poem that takes the reader on a road trip through Cuba. I just love all of the sound words which describes the the cars engine; a great way to teach the literary concept, onomatopoeia.These words made me think of my husband and his uncle. When my husband has an issue with one of our vehicles, he describes the noise in which the car is making and his uncle, an automotive genius, will already begin to think of what could be wrong. It is very impressive.Here in the story, the Papa continuously strives to make this antique car run; which is common in the country of Cuba. The books final pages includes an author's note, that tells us pre-1959 cars are extremely popular in this country, as the people are succumbed to both hardship and poverty. In addition, they consistently maintain these older cars with a lot of perseverance and creativity. The young boy in the story, likes to assist his Papa with fixing Cara Cara in hopes that one day it will become his.

I really enjoyed the trip this picture book takes through the Cuban countryside and into the city of Havana. It is easy to identify with the narrator, as he gets squashed in the backseat by all the passengers! Engle makes the question of whether or not the narrator and his father can get the car to work a suspenseful one, but as the journey gets underway, we don’t feel pity for the family for having an old car, but rather excitement for everything they see along the road to Havana. The bright colors of the cars alongside the blue of the sky and ocean make the pictures very attractive and illustrator Mike Curato adds plenty of detail to the vehicles and the scenery in Havana. The figures in the pictures can sometimes look a little flat, but it was nice to see an Afro-Latinx family featured—an unfortunate rarity in a lot of picture books. Both the author and illustrator include notes at the end talking a little about the background of the story and the process of researching the illustrations.

Beautiful illustrations by Mike Curato! As a daughter of a father who's spent years renovating and restoring classic cars and who loves to draw them, I totally have an appreciation and connection to the art in the book. He debated Richard Dawkins on "The God Delusion" in the University of Alabama (2007) and on "Has Science buried God?" in the Oxford Museum of Natural History (2008). He has also debated Christopher Hitchens on the New Atheism (Edinburgh Festival, 2008) and the question of "Is God Great?" (Samford University, 2010), as well as Peter Singer on the topic of "Is there a God?" (Melbourne, 2011). John is the author of a number of books on the relations of science, religion and ethics. He and his wife Sally live near Oxford.

Is there any contradiction between God and science and what is the bases of scientists’ positioning in this debate? How the author of the book, Oxford University professor of mathematics and other distinguished scientist holds up the believe in God in our times?Surely the title of the book itself, is intriguing and invites you to read it and find the answer that the author gives for these crucial questions. Professor Lennox in this book provides the readers with a broad spectrum of scientists that hold one of the position: either the science has buried God, or the opposite position that the science is a proof of the word of God. He provides these opposite positions for a various of topics starting with the scope of the science and continues with other topics such as the nature and scope of evolutions, the origin of life, the genetic code and its origin, even going into the philosophical legacy of David Hume regarding the violation of nature laws in miracles.Each chapter is a discussion on a new scientific topic. Professor Lennox starts each chapter with 2-3 contradicting quotes from known scientists. After that he goes in detail discussion of the topic, and scientists positioning on the topic. As a believer in God with all his soul and his mind, professor Lennox with a clear writing and a neutral tone, highlights that arguments against God and faith in God fall short in their foundation, and in majority are not substantiated by the science itself.I admire the depth of knowledge presented in this book by professor Lennox. Furthermore, he makes it clear from the very beginning the false premises of God- science debate, by emphasizing that this is not a science- faith debate, but a war of worldviews. Through the pages of the book, professor Lennox provides numerous quotes of scientists that refute God not based on their science and the scientific results but based on their faith that there is no God. Professor Lennox keeps a very high standard and do not denigrate the scientists that do not share his faith in God, but based on the facts of science and logics, he refutes their foundations.

The first time I heard of John Lennox was listening online to his debate against Richard Dawkins. Not only was he able to stand up to Dawkins's arguments, but he concluded with a sterling appeal to the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the final proof that God exists and has revealed himself to us. Dawkins responded that he was "disappointed" that Lennox would bring that matter up in a scientific debate, but I was encouraged. Later, hearing Lennox in person speaking in Washington State, I was further impressed by his knowledge, fluency, and ability to explain complex ideas to a popular audience.John Lennox is Professor in Mathematics in Oxford and Fellow in Mathematics and the Philosophy of Science at Green Templeton College. In addition to being a leading mathematician and philosopher of science, Lennox is a committed Christian and an outspoken apologist. In addition to debating famous atheists like Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, Lennox speaks to popular audiences to encourage their faith in God and the biblical revelation.This recent book presents a strong case for God as the intelligent, powerful Creator of the universe. I recommend it to all who desire to argue for the existence and work of the God of the Bible. Oxford mathematician Lennox concisely shows that "science vs. religion" is a myth and how many skeptics of religion have misused science for to support their personal beliefs. Lennox brings together many disciplines of science - though much on biology - and shows belief is not only compatible with science, but a logical conclusion of what we observe. As he shows. God is not an alternative to science, his existence explains why science can explain. A very accessible and wide-ranging book that is solidly rooted in facts and reason. People who really want to find answers and not rhetoric should start here. ExcellentThis book is a powerful treatise which I would classify as very advanced. Dr Lennox is at his best here but the average Reader may be overwhelmed by the exceptional intellectual treatment, detailing and footnoting of this work. Still, in my opinion, a valuable read and a great resource for anyone wishing to explore the world of science as it relates to religion without the propaganda which we are overwhelmed with in what is deemed "Higher Education"

A very good book, methodically laying out atheism’s claims and demolishing them. Covering a wide range of the pertinent topics from today’s controversies, Lennox handles each with a mathematician’s precision and a humorist’s charm. Highly recommended.
