I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my niece, but I read it (translating into Spanish) to my Cuban grandparents, who were truly delighted by it. The story is fun, the pictures are beautiful, and it gives you a snapshot of the familial bonds and culture of Cuba!

Beautiful, vivid illustrations, the words so reflective of Cuban life.

A little boy and his family are headed to his cousin's zero year birthday celebration. To get there, they must convince the old family automobile, Cara Cara, to make the trip. Cara Carr has been fixed multiple times through trial and error and creativity, but she still runs. Like many of the other old cars the boy sees on the streets of Havana.Definitely read the author's note in the back of the book about why Havana is so full of old cars and how people work to keep them going much longer than people in wealthier cultures. An interesting look at how one person's trash is another's treasure, and the power of ingenuity. It should also make readers pause and think about their own materialism. Kids who like cars and tinkering should LOVE this. I'm not super into cars but I appreciate the message Engle intended and I know this will find an audience. I also like the peek into a foreign culture. The illustrations are quite something too and make sure you read the illustrator's note on why the cars won't look 100% authentic.

A boy and his family get their old car running and head off to Havana for a celebration in this book with startlingly beautiful illustration and rich text. You will come away from this book with a deep appreciation for the stubborn persistence of Cuba's people and the lush beauty of their land.

All the Way to Havana by Margarita Engle, is a realistic fictional poem that takes the reader on a road trip through Cuba. I just love all of the sound words which describes the the cars engine; a great way to teach the literary concept, onomatopoeia.These words made me think of my husband and his uncle. When my husband has an issue with one of our vehicles, he describes the noise in which the car is making and his uncle, an automotive genius, will already begin to think of what could be wrong. It is very impressive.Here in the story, the Papa continuously strives to make this antique car run; which is common in the country of Cuba. The books final pages includes an author's note, that tells us pre-1959 cars are extremely popular in this country, as the people are succumbed to both hardship and poverty. In addition, they consistently maintain these older cars with a lot of perseverance and creativity. The young boy in the story, likes to assist his Papa with fixing Cara Cara in hopes that one day it will become his.

I really enjoyed the trip this picture book takes through the Cuban countryside and into the city of Havana. It is easy to identify with the narrator, as he gets squashed in the backseat by all the passengers! Engle makes the question of whether or not the narrator and his father can get the car to work a suspenseful one, but as the journey gets underway, we don’t feel pity for the family for having an old car, but rather excitement for everything they see along the road to Havana. The bright colors of the cars alongside the blue of the sky and ocean make the pictures very attractive and illustrator Mike Curato adds plenty of detail to the vehicles and the scenery in Havana. The figures in the pictures can sometimes look a little flat, but it was nice to see an Afro-Latinx family featured—an unfortunate rarity in a lot of picture books. Both the author and illustrator include notes at the end talking a little about the background of the story and the process of researching the illustrations.

Beautiful illustrations by Mike Curato! As a daughter of a father who's spent years renovating and restoring classic cars and who loves to draw them, I totally have an appreciation and connection to the art in the book. ExcellentThis book is a powerful treatise which I would classify as very advanced. Dr Lennox is at his best here but the average Reader may be overwhelmed by the exceptional intellectual treatment, detailing and footnoting of this work. Still, in my opinion, a valuable read and a great resource for anyone wishing to explore the world of science as it relates to religion without the propaganda which we are overwhelmed with in what is deemed "Higher Education"

A very good book, methodically laying out atheism’s claims and demolishing them. Covering a wide range of the pertinent topics from today’s controversies, Lennox handles each with a mathematician’s precision and a humorist’s charm. Highly recommended.

There are a lot of cute projects in here, but there are no instructions for sizing an item up or down. This obviously doesn't much matter for things like scarves, but it would be nice to be able to make the mittens and socks in various sizes, and unfortunately, I am not adept enough at knitting to know how to adjust the patterns myself. For example, the hedgehog mittens on the cover "should fit an average child of 7-10 years", which is disappointing to me as a 31 year old woman who wants to wear them. :(

I got this as a gift for my mom who is an advanced knitter. I am fairly disappointed as I was hoping for more patterns like the one featured on the cover. Having gone through the book now, I would say that it is about 75% scarves (with critter faces and tales) and the rest largely hats and socks. There are only two patterns like the one on the cover - the hedgehog mittens and fox mittens. They are both adorable and my son immediately said he'd like the fox mittens. This will come down to personal preference, but my mom makes adorable mittens and fingerless gloves and I thought this would expand her repertoire. It's misleading when a book cover features the cutest pattern, but it is not representative of the majority of content. And since "Look Inside" is only a sampling of what you will find inside I hoped for (many) more mittens.

There are a few reasons that I was disappointed, but what contributed most to the lower star rating was the lack of sizing options.Something else is that all of the patterns are variations of the same basic scarf/mitten/hat/sock patterns. I really consider it more like 3 or 4 patterns with about 30 variations.

I'm somewhat disappointed in that so many of the otherwise clever patterns are written for bulky/chunky yarn and large needles, which are not my preference. There was no way to determine this from the "look inside" format.

This book has some seriously cute designs, however, most of them are geared towards little kids. Still, they're cute and look pretty easy to work up so I'll probably get some use out of the patterns.

I agree with most of the other 5 star reviews. Love it! The only thing I did not like was the fact that the stockinette stitches all curl & I wanted my scarves to be flat. I am a fairly experienced knitter, so I changed the stitch choices to seed stitch (faces) & twisted rib (bodies).Now I get flat scarves and texture at the same time. I am absolutely thrilled with the results.

I have always been drawn to photography, especially that of landscape and nature. I first came across Dr. Elliot McGucken’s photography on Instagram. From there, I went down a rabbit hole and discovered his work. Aside from books, there are multiple means of viewing his work online. It is all stunning.Right now I would consider myself the most amateur of photographers. Coming across Dr. McGucken’s work not only inspired me to become more involved in my own interests, but also inspired me to learn more about photography.I found this particular book title in his postings on Instagram and immediately checked it out. I didn’t even have to look at much of the sample to know I wanted to purchase. As an aspiring photographer, and for any aspiring or professional photographer, reading this book and looking at Dr. McGucken’s work helped me understand how to use my camera (Nikon D810...the book is also helpful to people using Canon and Sony) in various locations and conditions. One of my biggest problems at being someone who has never taken a photography class (or has never even sat with an expert before) is understanding various f-stops, shutter speeds, aperture settings, ISO settings, etc. I have never been the best at combining all of these settings to make really great art. He has taken all of this information and laid it out next to each photo in the book. Regardless of whether or not you want to take photos in the same locations (which l am lucky to be able to seek some of these places out since I live in California), you can still find places with similar lighting, weather and geographical conditions. No matter what you are looking to do, there is a picture in here with an explanation that can assist.Dr. McGucken also lists techniques to use to take the best shots. He reminds to always shoot in RAW, use tripods and use timers. He is also very personable about sharing photographic experiences with others. He encourages the user/reader of this book to shoot pictures they can share with world, remember the beauty in everything, and always respect the nature in which you are shooting.And if anything else, just buy the book for the absolutely gorgeous photos that are within. Dr. McGucken has an eye for nature and has a true teacher’s heart when it comes to sharing his expertise and passion. The best part is that this book is digital and easy to use so if you decide to go to any locations in it (most are national parks, monuments or historic sites without cellular or WiFi), it will already be downloaded to your device!Happy reading and happy explorations!
