I bought this book to use with my square food gardening book. It is filled with great tips, and ideas for how to raise garden crops using the vertical method. It is a different way to garden if you have never done this before, but it really works. If you don't have much room and you want to get the best bang for your buck, this book is one you should have. I highly recommend it.

I've bought a few books lately, all in the gardening section. I looked for the highest ratings, but verified the ratings by reading the reviews, both good & bad. Well, I was looking for a book to give more ideas for Vertical Gardening. I already garden, have many different plants.. vegetables, fruits, flowers and fruit trees. I'm looking to utilize more vertical space, so I have more room to grow more.I have only a few sections in my yard where I have a good amount of unobstructed sun, perfect for food growing. My trees are all in containers for now, so that I can continue to shuffle things around, trying to have everyone happy. I'm getting rid of many of the decorative plants that hardly contribute to the pollinators as well.This book goes into Vertical Gardening but I found a good part of it for decorative purposes... covering cabins, trees (which I don't agree with, I think the Ivy chokes them), gazebos or walls. This type of gardening is not very appealing to me. For one, I don't have the land for it. Secondly, I prefer gardening for food and planting for the beneficial insects as well. I get pleasure from the great scents and the beauty of butterflies or bees buzzing all around.The other thing I didn't like about the book, most of the pages have no color. There is a small section with glossy, colorful photos, but they were more for the decorative vines, walls, & fountain views. Maybe about 20 pages worthof colorful photos... out of the 300+ pages. The rest of the pages are Black, White, & Green, however, there were tons of black & white photos throughout... I just wish they were in color to be able to see the detail better, or the colors of the foliage & flowers, there would be a more visible contrast with the trellis or whatever structure they were making an example of. I just think it would make the book a tad more helpful in color. The author does touch on the food that is "growable" vertically, such as mini melons, pumpkins, squash... he lists some growing facts like planting season, typical days to maturity, zones best grown in and the general length or height to expect. That's helpful, so you can plan for specific spacing and avoid over crowding. The book also goes into espalier growing, which is also vertical, but they're trees, again, that's not the area I was looking for ideas on.I don't know. I can't say the book wasn't helpful at all, but it wasn't as helpful as I expected either. I'm keeping it and utilize what I can out of it.

I recommend this book for everyone! Whether you only have space for containers on a patio, a 12 inch space against a south, east, or west wall, or a garden plot with rows and rows, you can benefit from the information in this book. Did you know that you can grow 10 times more green beans when growing a pole snap bean than when growing a bush bean?I grew my first garden this past summer at my new residence, but the garden space wasn't enough for what I have plans to grow. My hubby said we can't make a bigger plot, so I am thrilled while reading this book, realizing that many of my space problems can be easily solved with a little effort and cost. Cost depends on our choices of the materials that we use and I intend to grow bamboo for many of my structures. The author explains various types of bamboo that he likes for best appearance.Other added benefits are the saving of water while growing a lot more of whatever you want to grow, less work of weeding, no more back breaking work picking green beans and such low to the ground, easier pest control, better flavor of produce...and so much more.You can grow in an 8 square foot vertical space what you would normally grow in a 24 square foot horizontal space. My husband says that food taste better when vertical growing and Derek Fell explains that the plants contain more Chlorophyll, which improves the taste of the plants. He also shares how to grow tomatoes on top of the ground and potatoes directly underneath in the tomato root system.This book contains information of how to use various items to build your structures to grow up and not out, which plants produce an abundance supply, and tidbits of wisdom from years of experience and experimentation are sprinkled throughout.My mother gave me an advertisment that she received concerning this book and I am so glad that she did! It's going to prove invaluable to me!

There are helpful suggestions for dealing with problems such as diseases and insect, controlling weeds and otherwise keeping plants healthy. Different sections deal with food producing plants, flowering vines and others best known for their foliage. Color photos in the book were high quality and attractive. While the book is inexpensive, I feel it is well worthy owning.

I sometimes am limited to space when gardening. I was amazed at how many things can grow vertically. This book is very educational and I am glad that I purchased it to add to my collection.

LOVE THIS!!!!! I am combining several ideas in gardening since I have very limited sunlight due to trees. I am even growing a vertical garden in an old cooler on my patio. I can pull it up close to the house if bad weather is coming or out of the way if bbq-ing. It seems easier to keep the animals off, is a little better to see what is growing, can watch for bugs better, seems like it will be easier to harvest and save my back from bending over so far. I have even incorporated an old metal box springs off my grandmothers bed. I place next to the fence and used t-post and straps to hold upright. On the top I planted flowers in pots. I have tied my beans and squash with different colored yarn to keep them growing in there own spot and have stick pinwheels in the sides and shny things in the trees close by. This does seem to be helping with the birds. I didn't mind at first but then the birds started pecking at the produce. Lots of great Ideas!!!!!

"The Illustrated Companion to Nelson's Navy" is a wonderful repository of information about ships, life at sea, and naval warfare during the era of Jack Aubrey, Richard Bolitho, and Horation Hornblower (frequent mention of these and other fictional Royal Navy officers is made in the book, placing them in the real life context). The range of material covered is very broad, and it is attractively and concisely presented, often in a graphical or tabular form. The book is illustrated with hundreds of drawings, paintings and diagrams, many of them from contemporary sources. If you want information about ship types, naval weapons, life on board, battles, ship handling, sails and rigging, watches and bells, rates of pay, distribution of prize money, and seemingly almost anything else you can think of, this is a very handy place to find it. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about the background to the novels of Patrick O'Brian, Alexander Kent, Dudley Pope, and C.S. Forester.

This is a handy supplement to the larger "Nelson's Navy" and worth picking up. I would have given it four stars but for some of the lesser quality "sketches" that make up a large portion of the illustrations. That being said, the book IS a great little quick reference guide.

A good reference for model ship builders and the history enthusiast. Numerous photo's, drawings. diagrams, a good glossary of sea terms.Written as an addition to Nelson's navy the ships, men and organization 1793 -1815. Both books give a very thorough history of the Royal Navy of the time.Worth the price.

Excellent information - useful when reading Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey and Maturin series (starting with Master and Commander) or the Hornblower books.

When the world discovered Patrick O'Brian a decade and a half ago, the immense popularity of the Jack Aubrey novels also engendered a cottage industry of explanatory volumes for those not versed in the history and daily life of the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic era. I've read nearly all those books and nearly all of them have something useful to say about the ins and out of sail-driven warships, the dense tangle of jargon, the naval bureaucracy, the nature of strategy and tactics at sea, and the key players who make up the background to the novels. And that's true here, too, to a considerable extent. It's a pity that the execution is so sloppy with this one. Unlike experts like Brian Lavery and Geoff Hunt and James McGuane and Steve Pope, Blake is not an expert in the field. He's a desk editor at Macmillan -- who apparently declined to publish his book themselves. He organizes what he wants to say under the usual rubrics: The background, the navy, the sailors, the ships, the war itself. He includes numerous diagrams and maps and charts and lists. And he doesn't restrict himself to O'Brian, bringing in quotes and examples from C. S. Forester and Dudley Pope and a number of other authors -- though I spotted a number of errors regarding the literature without even the need to pull of my own copies off the shelf. On the facts of the real world of the Royal Navy, it's not bad.. But it's an illustrated book, and the artwork simply sucks. I've seen many of the illustrations before, in earlier books like this -- that's inevitable -- but here Rowlandson's satirical portraits, for example, are reworked as foggy watercolor washes devoid of useful detail. Some of the illustrations are simply impenetrable (look at pages 103 or 119 or 127!), especially when it comes to uniforms and ship's gear. Instead of an impressionist, Blake should have hired a trained draughtsman. The reader of a book like this wants to see careful, precise, detailed treatments of the subjects that interest him, not muddy sketches or unnecessary re-imaginings of classic drawings and prints. The citations are pitiful, as well; "from a nineteenth-century source" is not a useful reference. It will be most useful to the reader who already is familiar with the subject matter -- much less so to the novice. But for a reference work, I recommend Lavery or Hunt.

When I was much younger and first started reading the Horatio Hornblower books by C.S. Forester, I was blown away by the authenticity, yet puzzled by the jargon - what's a halliard, for example, or a topsail? What does it mean to shorten sail, and what is the lee side of a ship? This book would have helped immensely. It's not overly technical, nor does it swamp you with minutiae, but it gives you a good general overview of the British ships of the Napoleonic era, what the nautical terms are, what life was like on board and a couple of summaries of battles for good measure.This is an appetizer, but what an appetizer it is. If you're looking for more technical specs of ships of the line look elsewhere, but if you're a newbie to the entire historical nautical fiction scene, I can think of few better places to start.

I needed a primer on warships in the age of sail, and needed it on short notice. This was available, so I bought it. All in all it wasn't too bad. The book covered a wide range of subjects, and I walked away with the feeling that I had acquired a good base of information. In this the book excels.Still, for me the heavy use of period naval jargon hindered my understanding of the subject matter, and the illustrations weren't the best. As other readers have noted, there were a number of technical inaccuracies, many of which could have been caught through better proof-reading.Still, all in all I liked the book, and will keep it around for future reference.--Jeff

This book is full of clear illustrations and explanations of the main aspects of naval life and operations. I'm working my way through the O'Brian series and this book is quite helpful when I can't remember a brig from a sloop or whether the topsails are above or below the topgallants. My brother is reading the Hornblower series and he'll get a birthday present of this book. I especially like the references to the multiple fictional series that appear throughout the sidebars and main text.Don't look for long, drawn-out technical specifications in this book. It covers a wide variety of topics at just enough detail to appreciate the historical accuracy and color of the fiction.`

The audible version of Hidden Figures (showing the images of celebrities Taraji P. Henson,Janelle Monae, Octavia Spencer) caught my attention after I saw it featured online on a website that I was on. I decided to take a chance on it to broaden my mind. I am glad to have taken a chance on the audio despite the not so cheap price. One reason; the narrator shares one of the stories where one of the women admitted to have grown up in Hampton Virginia around successful role models who worked an accomplished living in field of education andor the federal government (NASA, National Advisory for Air Committee, mention of the Langley base in Virginia andor the sciences etc.) . This positively shaped her worldview on what was possible. Many of the women who applied at Langley were mentioned to come from accomplished employment backgrounds in education as well as having mathematical talents. There was mentioned that Langley employed multiple women in the field of computers. One of the women, Dorothy Vaughan is mentioned to have worked as a math teacher in Farmville, Virginia. Dorothy Vaughan’s in- laws were considered part of the financial upper-class in the area and mentioned to own a barbershop, a pool hall, and a service station. Their (Vaughan’s in-laws) activities made headlines at times through such media as what was mentioned in the audible version the Norfolk Journal and Guide. However, Vaughan was mentioned to be a modest person and aimed to carefully balance her family life with her career life. Vaughan’s academic accomplishments resulted in her becoming a valedictorian of her high school and attaining a full ride scholarship to Wilberforce University. The audio discussed that Vaughan performed so well to the point that one of the professors recommended her for a graduate program in Howard University. However, economic conditions after her graduation at Wilberforce University influenced Vaughan to hang up her graduate school dreams and pursue a career in teaching instead. She worked as a waitress at a hotel in Richmond Virginia until 1931 when she eventually moved on to her teaching job in Farmville Virginia. The audio shared that around this time Vaughan attracted the romantic attention of one of the area’s most eligible bachelors in Farmville Virginia. Of course, there are much more informative details in this audio. The Hidden Figures audible version by Margot Lee Shetterly, Robin Miles, and Harper Audio is a worthwhile purchase for people of various backgrounds (racial, socio-economic etc.) because of the theme of achieving success despite coming from a challenging environment/background as well as the abundance of historical information. I admit that I do not discuss my own full/paternal background not out of shame but more out of only knowing/being certain of my late biological mother and some of her background as well as showing some respect for both my adoptive father who is still alive and my late adoptive mother.

My comments are somewhat bias since Katherine Johnson is my aunt. I have seen the movie twice and read the book. My preference is the book mostly because of the additional information provided about Aunt Katherine. Many movie goers who only see the movie will miss out on a number of opportunities to see more realistically Aunt Katherine's nature, attitudes, and life's perspectives on work, family, and race. The movie is done very well and I commend all those involved in its production including the talented stars. It is a case of getting one slice of pie when you could get two slices. I suggest you eat WELL! ATBroady

I saw the movie before I read the book, and I am honestly not sure whether that was a good or bad thing. I loved the movie, and I loved the book, but they are very different.Generally, the book is a very fast-paced and interesting read about the black women who worked at the Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, and their many and varied contributions to the field of aeronautical and astronautical research. It is part biography, part history of NASA, part history of segregation, part history of the civil rights movement, part history of the Virginia peninsula, and part history of women's rights. It is absolutely fascinating.That being said, the book is very different from the movie, so don't go into it expecting them to be the same. The movie is deeply touching, but it is actually fairly inaccurate, and it has been pretty aggressively whitewashed (see re: the Kevin Costner character). I think it is good to both see the movie and read the book, because one of the critical differences, and the difference that I think is missed entirely by the movie (to its great detriment) is the way in which issues of segregation were actually tackled at Langley. The movie makes it appear that enlightened white men of power were responsible for Langley's integration, when in fact the integration of Langley was almost entirely borne organically and of necessity. The book does a good job of explaining this, whereas that aspect of the movie is almost entirely fictionalized. I thought the movie took away some of the women's victories in this area (Katherine Johnson, for example, never went to the "colored" bathroom. She just used the regular, unlabeled bathroom, and no one ever told her not to), but the book gives the women more credit for their small yet trailblazing acts of defiance.One other note: the book actually covers quite a bit of complex scientific detail, but it is entirely readable to the layperson.I highly, highly recommend this book.

I adore this book, extraordinary formulas simple to make, no high flutten foo-foo stuff, simply great sustenance that is so invigorating to see. Incredible book . I adore their delicious thoughts, and I counsel the book every prior week assembling my basic supply list. Cherish it.

I’ve made one recipe from he boom so far and it was great. My only issue is I went to make another recipe today, got the listed ingredients, and when I went to make it there were different ingredients listed in the instructions. So now I can’t make it because I have no clue how much of everything is needed.

What a collection of recipes. There’s something in here for everyone. Regardless of dietary preferences or needs, this book has it all. Why aren’t there more books like this out there that offer an alternative to the usual hard to make, time consuming recipe books out there? Most of these recipes are straightforward, simple enough and most of all, they can all be prepped ahead with minimal effort.

Good value. Good recipes. Pictures are in black and white which is annoying but
