I bought this book hoping to learn about subtleties in the solar system such as horseshoe orbits, shepherding satellites in ring systems, etc. I was richly rewarded. The book goes into deep detail on a large variety of secular and resonant phenomena. But a couple of warnings are appropriate.First, the book has a very high density of equations, and having studied physics I've seen my share. The math is not too difficult, really (mostly expansions, transformations, etc.), but the authors do not shy away from showing all the details of a calculation. In several chapters expansion follows expansion until the reader is lost in a sea of similar variables. Without spending much more time deriving the results myself, there was no hope of following portions of their development. The book might well have benefitted from tighter editing in this regard; perhaps more of this detail could have been relegated to appendices so that the physical conclusions would stand out more clearly.Second, there are a lot of errors in the book, both typos in equations and in surrounding text. I easily spotted a number of errors which were obvious even to a neophyte in orbital mechanics like myself. They should not have escaped good proofreading. A Google search for "solar system dynamics errata" (without the quotes) will bring you to a pdf file containing detailed corrections. Kudos to the authors for maintaining such a file! I strongly recommend readers download it and keep it handy while using the book.Bottom line: tough going but rewarding.

As a graduate student in astronomy I highly recommend this book. It gets the job done on a multitude of dynamical topics, and the explanations come in many layers. One can skip to the equations in a relatively easy manner, but in depth derivations are provided.Among these, the best explanation of what an arbitrary 2-body orbit looks like on the sky.David

This book is by far my most used/readable textbook. I call it my bible, since I am constantly referring to it for the most fundamental dynamics. So many sections are incredibly useful for us Planetary Scientists and Astronomers. It breaks down in a very easily understandable way many of the complex dynamics such as Perturbation equations, 3 body problems, resonances, and the all mighty disturbing function. If you are in/planning on entering the Astronomy/Planetary Science fields and this book is not on your shelf as you read this, BUY IT! Small price to pay for something so useful.-Astronomer

I will review them in turn, but browsers should be aware of the others, so they are listed here: See also, "The New Solar System," J. Kelly Beatty, Carolyn Collins Petersen, Andrew Chalkin, and "The Planetary Scientist's Companion," Katharine Lodders and Bruce Fegley, Jr.If one of the other books, "The New Solar System" is lacking in mathematics, this volume more than makes up for it. Although my current interest, the Titius/Bode Law, is given only one page of description, it is a full and fair assessment of this astronomical curiosity. The authors immediately follow this on p. 9 by a statement that sums up the flavor of the rest of the book: "...It is Newton's laws that are at work and the subtle gravitational effect that determines the dynamical structure of our solar system is the phenomenon of 'resonance'." Planets do not circle the sun independently, they influence each other's orbits in fascinating and subtle ways, some of which may take billions of years to evolve.The manifold aspects of "resonance" can be seen in the Chapter headings: The Two-Body Problem, The Restricted Three-Body Problem, Tides, Rotation, and Shape, Spin-Orbit Coupling, The Disturbing Function, Secular Perturbations, Resonant Perturbations, Chaos and Long-Term Evolution, and Planetary Rings.The mathematics appears to be straightforward, but like most perturbation theory, it is not simple. Calculus is essential, of course. However, I welcome it. It will challenge my curiosity and ability for many years to come.This is a compelling, must-have book for the advanced student of the science underlying our solar system and probably of other planetary systems as well.

What few of us realize is just how dynamic the solar system really is.The rings of Saturn were first discovered by Galileo in 1610, but not really understood to be a thin disk of indivudial items until Maxwell in 1859. The rings of Uranus, Neptune and Jupiter weren't really discovered until very recently. Why rings? Why are they spaced the way they are? Why are some of them twisted. And what about comets, some of which have moons of their own?This is the classic book on how things move in the solar system. It is the world of Newtonian mechanics, but brought forward by 350 years of observatiosn.This book does not shy away from the mathematics that really describe what's happening. A bit of calculus, including integral calculus, will be needed to get the full impact of what the authors are saying.

I have two grown sons, and though I am not a mother of girls, as a teacher and cheer coach I have personal relationships with many girls during the school year. Throughout my career, I have prayed for many girls (and boys), but this book shows me ways I can better focus my prayers for many specific situations that young people face. Along with the scripture-based prayers, each chapter contains "Girl Talk" activities for moms and daughters (divided into three age groups---little girls, middle girls, and big girls), wonderful and practical ways for moms to engage girls of all ages in conversations tied to the very prayers they have been praying for their daughters. No girls have too many people praying for them, so even though I am not their mom, I will be using this book to help guide my prayers for the many girls I love. If you have girls you love, whether they are your daughters, granddaughters, students, nieces, or friends, this book is a wonderful resource.

I loved this book, as evidenced by all the notes in the margins, underlined sections, and dog-eared pages! I thought it was a fantastic guide for praying SPECIFIC Bible-based prayers for my daughters. It really revealed some weaknesses in my heart and reminded me of important truths that I hadn’t thought about since becoming a mom. Thank you so much for this TREASURE Teri Lynne!

Although their communities are different, they have both grown up with the legend of a crazed former slave, a hermit called "The Madman of Piney Woods." Their friendship is complicated by the fact that Red's grandmother is extremely racist and fearful. The strong father-son relationship between Red and his father is tenderly and honestly created. Relationships between family and friends are realistically complicated, changing, and complex. The horror of Ireland's potato famine, the "coffin ships" that carried Grandmother O'Toole to Canada, and the prejudice faced by Irish-Canadians are brutally brought to life, as is the constant tension felt by the few remaining original settlers of Buxton. Although occasionally somber and heartbreaking, there is great humor, hope, and adventure from Benji and Red. I am a big fan of several of Christopher Paul Curtis books, but this one was just too boring for me. A lot of it was a little too far fetched compared to his stories found in his other books. I was under the understanding that this was a continuation of mostly true story of the town of Buxton in Canada. I am an adult, so take that into consideration.

I loved this companion book to Elijah of Buxton. A tender telling of a good story, and a well-done take on black-white friendship. And a pretty good plot...so it's enjoyable on several levels. And there's nothing quite like this one.

B liked the stories about the civil war. So much history woven nicely into the main stories. Mr. Curtis is a magician with words. His books a delicacy - savor slowly- before digesting the wisdom. Although it is not a sequel to Elijah- it should be shared immediately afterward. Warning to grade 4-6 teachers -as with Elijah there are powerfully graphic images so please read the novel before sharing. Elijah of Buxton, forever my favorite, but boys who are mature enough to follow two story lines will learn deep lessons.

Nice collection of crocheted snowflake patterns. Good variety, not difficult at all. The patterns use chain, slip stitch, single, half double, and double crochet stitches, with a few trebles in some of the patterns. Should be easy for a crocheter with a little experience (advanced beginner, perhaps).But the BEST thing about this collection: It includes both "text" instructions as well as SYMBOL patterns. If you've ever wanted to learn how to read a symbol crochet pattern, this would be an excellent start as you have both types of instructions for each pattern.Another major plus is the formatting. Often, Kindle editions can be difficult to follow due to formatting issues. This one is just about perfect. Each set of written instructions appears first (usually 1 page, occasionally 2 pages), followed on the next page by a photo of the snowflake, and on the following page is the symbol pattern almost precisely matching the photo in size and orientation. You can see the written instructions, match those to the photo and match them to the symbol diagram. As I said, just about perfect.I'll be making a bunch of these this year using metallic crochet threads (I usually work with size 10).

The written patterns are confusing because they are not traditionally written. Charts are clear, so I preferred using those instead. Same as book 2 but still like the patterns.

I purchased the Kindle version and I've made several snowflake patterns so far. Good to follow pattern charts as well, as it makes it so much easier for me.

These patterns seem easy to follow. I love patterns with symbols as that is how my mom taught me to read patterns when I was young. Now it makes it easier to check a pattern when I am confused.

Great for teaching a new generation. The charts are clear enough for beginners. The contrasting colors for consecutive rows is very helpful!

I can follow visual patterns better than written ones so these were great. Very quick and easy. Being able to download instantly to my kindle was another huge plus.

I'm working my way through this one snowflake at a time, and it's my first venture into thread crochet. The patterns are easy to read, and the charts are very helpful. I'm very pleased with my results, and I would recommend this book highly.

I prefer "A Still Forest Pool" to this book; it is brief and concise, and a good way to get a flavor of Ajahn Chah's teachings, for those who just want an introduction. As "Food for the Heart" was written from recorded talks, I found a great deal of repetition of ideas and concepts in this volume, which are stated much more succinctly in "A Still Forest Pool".

This book is a wonderful collection of teachings from Ajahn Chah. The style is very straight forward-no beating around the bush. Some lessons are aimed towards the monks/nuns (as the lesson maybe talks for them) but you are able to learn from them as well. I recommend the book for beginners to advanced alike. The language is easy to understand, without a lot of confusing "Buddhist Terms" there are some but it has a glossary if you need it (which is great if you have to refer back to it in another chapter). This book is easy to break up-meaning you don't need to read it all at once. I actually took about 6 months to read through it-took my good old time :) -I would read some then let the lessons sink in etc.. while I worked on lessons online for the Dhammapada. Then I would come back to it. No problem at all, as each chapter is different-not like a story-but lessons/teachings per chapter. The stories are wide in variety & I think most Buddhist students can take something away from reading this book. I highly recommend it. I also recommend books by Ajahn Brahm.

Like all these books there will be some ideas that you don't agree with or that contradict other ideas expressed in the same book, but it's one of the strongest books I've read in terms of clarity, practicality and simplicity of explanation. Interestingly (sort of), I was simultaneously reading this and Jack Kornfield's "After the Ecstasy the Laundry". Ajahn Chah was Kornfield's teacher, and Kornfield would occasionally make comments about Chah, like seeing Chah towards the end of his life when he was very sick and a short bit about that encounter. Anyway, "Food For The Heart" is a really good book. I think reading just the free Kindle sample will give you a good sense of whether it's the type of book that would appeal to you.

It would be a good book for Theravada and Mahayana students to study and discuss together. Ajahn Chah seemed to have been right at the intersection of the two schools.

Great reading and lessons. A profound refresher of mindfulness and staying in the now. Recommend this and other books by the author.

This is the best Buddhist book I have read on how to observe the mind so that the truth of "no self" finally dawns upon one. If one is serious about Buddhist spiritual practice, with its emphasis on eliminating "I-consciousness," he or she might benefit greatly from reading these talks of Ajahn Chah.

I highly recommend reading this book to anyone and everyone. The teachings of Ajahn Chah are so simple and direct. They aren't watered down for lay people; his message to lay people and monks is basically the same. While reading there where many times when I was genuinley inspired to practice the teachings. While reading there were many times when I thought to myself "Yeah, that really is how things are" because Ajahn Chah states the obvious things in life that we all just don't seem to notice. I have a bunch of Buddhist books and this is by far my favorite.

This pamphlet is short and includes pretty common information. For the absolute beginner to incense, it provides a bit of knowledge and history, but the basic information on making your own incense is, for me, less-than-satisfactory in that it's too basic. I wanted to know about combining scents, creating other types of incense besides plain soaked joss sticks, and the like. I didn't find that here.

Yes! Don't be fooled by this book's humble looks, it is unending useful and informative. Sure you won't have lots of colorful pictures but they aren't necessary and the price is great because it doesn't have a ton of stuff you don't need but everything you do. Looking to start making incense- start here!

Concise and informative. I wanted to know more about what various options would bring to an incense blend and this delivered. I'll refer to it often.

My Review: The Edge of Lost is the kind of book that plunges you into its world and was so engaging that I read it in two sittings. It has two storylines, one being much more dominant, that finally converge towards the end of the book. The book starts in 1937 with a frantic search for a little girl who has gone missing on Alcatraz island. Then the book shifts back a couple of decades to Ireland and the main story which focuses on the tumultuous life of a young Irish boy, Shan Keagan who makes his way to America with the hopes to lives his dreams as an entertainer.Through Shan's eyes the reader gets a clear view of the immigrant experience as he moves to New York City. He's an easy character to like and you can't help but root for him and the cast of secondary characters and the descriptions of New York City are vividly depicted. While the reader gets engrossed in Shan's life the question of what happened to the missing child on Alcatraz still lingers.I'd classify this book as a lighter historical fiction read. Sure, it deals with some heavy situations (immigration, prohibition, prison, loss ...) and had some great writing but it still kept that lighter tone. The only thing that lowered my rating of this book is that while I adored Shan's story, the storyline that focuses on the missing girl (the last third of the book) fell a little flat to me. I guess I was expecting something grittier since it was set on Alcatraz island and more substantial since the missing girl is the focus of the book description. Also, towards the end of the book some of the twists felt far fetched and things wrapped up a little too nicely. But in the end this was still a very enjoyable read and I liked how the two storylines were brought together towards the end of the book.This is a coming of age story about about family - in all its forms, the immigrant experience and taking advantage of second and third chances. This is the kind of book that "grows" on you. You might buy it because of the reviews. You might buy it because of the description summary that sounds so mysterious and incredible. But when you read it, you find out it's a well written story about an orphan that you want to feel sorry for but don't because he doesn't feel sorry for himself. He just picks up and keeps going. He's grateful and good to the people who help him and that's what makes the difference as the story unfolds. It has several mysteries to resolve. What happened to his father? What happened to the brother? and as the review summary implied what's with the little girl on Alcatraz? This is a slow but wonderful read. I never got bored with it but it did not race to the end. (That is for those of you who want a lot of action and a fast read). It's just a story about a boys/mans life that has many interesting turns, some good, some bad, all of them woven with human decisions.

As a reader, finding a new remarkable storyteller is a joy. “The Edge of Lost” is the second novel written by Kristina McMorris that I’ve read and I’m pleased she happened along. Her work is compelling and moving, and her research into background material is remarkable. Research is essential if I’m to enjoy historical fiction.Shanley Keagan is a product of early 1900 Ireland. Life is not easy and early tragedies send him to the United States where, as a precocious 12-year old he begins making pennies in the dives and pubs of New York City. He works as a comedian and vaudevillian performer, getting quiet snickers and some limited notoriety. An Italian family takes him in to replace a son that died and he becomes a family member with the parents, their daughter, and son. He soon becomes Tommy Capello, being informally given a deceased boy’s name by the family.A crime leader who appreciates his work in the club also informally adopts him. The bad guy also employs his pseudo brother, who rises to be a high-powered capo.Family turmoil and unfortunate association with underworld figures eventually land Tommy on the Rock of Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay. He has settled in for his long sentence when he discovers an escape has been planned for him and, because he has befriended the young daughter of a brutal prison guard he decides to attempt it, taking her along. That’s it for disclosing the storyline.McMorris does a masterful job of studying family relationships, the disturbing association of criminals, the culture of prison environment, and behavior of the upstanding when caught up in unsavory situations. The characters in her novel are realistic, complex, and driven by human behavior to which we can all relate. The pacing and continuity of her story never becomes too complex to weaken the reality. One must continue to read, ignoring other more pressing issues such as eating and sleeping.I strongly recommend that you pick up her books, settle in for an entertaining read, and return to your normal living pattern when the reading is completed.
