How to Think About the Great Ideas: From the Great Books of Western Civilization

From Publishers Weekly

Decades before Allan Bloom famously attacked multicultural education in The Closing of the American Mind (1988), there was Mortimer Adler. A university-trained philosopher, Adler (b. 1902) is the controversy-prone inventor of Great Books-driven college curricula; during the 1930s, he caused such a stir at the University of Chicago that the faculty members demanded his dismissal. Later (1953-1954), he starred in his own TV show, The Great Ideas--and it's that show that gives this book its structure. Composed of transcripts of 52 half-hour segments, the book showcases Adler's ideas about all the big categories--truth, beauty, freedom, love, sex, art, justice, rationality, humankind's nature, Darwinism, government. In each chapter ("How to Think about God," "How to Read a Book," etc.), readers encounter Adler's philosophical instructions and opinions: he argues that the goal of both prison sentences and spankings should be to avenge, to reform and to deter others; he suggests that beauty is not just in the eye of the beholder; and--no surprise here--he confesses that he favors "the ancient and traditional meaning of art." Adler even takes up the subject of whether (and how) TV can be an effective educational tool. In the end, whether or not you agree with Adler, there's no question that the ideas he presents in these chapters are important. After all, they set the terms of a series of cultural and intellectual debates we're still having today--about art, curriculum and freedom. (May) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

"Philosophy is everybody's business," according to Adler. He sought to prove his point in a Great Ideas television series broadcast in the San Francisco Bay area in 1953 and 1954. The programs were filmed, later transferred to videotape and audiotape, and finally transcribed on behalf of the Center for the Study of the Great Ideas; it is those transcripts that are the basis for the discussions here. Adler addresses a wide range of philosophical subjects, from epistemology to evolution, from art and work to law and government, sex, love, and friendship, progress and change, good and evil, war and peace, truth and beauty. In some programs, Adler advances his discussion alone; in others, questions from associate Lloyd Luckman give the reader (or TV audience) a surrogate with whom to identify. The prolific Adler produced more than 60 books over the past 70-plus years; this first volume of the new century is most likely to find readers where his previous general works have circulated. How do you summarize a summary of 2500 years of thought? Great! Mortimer Adler was one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th Century, primarily because of the literally ecyclopaedic nature of his knowledge. I say literally encyclopaedic because he edited the Encyclopaedia Britanica and wrote The Synopticon, a summary of Western philosophy, among the scores of other books bearing his name. He is best known for popularizing the Great Books theory of education. This is based on his own original reseach distilling the essence of Western Thought into 102 "Great Ideas." How To Think About The Great Ideas is a condensation of transcipts of a popular TV show of the 1950's, but the superficiality such an origin suggests does not permeate the book. The TV show covered only 21 of the great ideas, while the book deals with about half of the 102. The somewhat colloquial style will surprise readers who may have read Aristotle, Decartes, or Kant in full. We are not accustomed to hearing about philosophy from TV. But the simplicity of the presentation only serves to heighten the clarity of the ideas. The Great Ideas which you struggled over in college really can be discussed in ordinary language, and this is the real achievement of this book. The ideas build from the basic question of "What is truth?" to a consideration of the nature of man, human freedom, society and even a review of the arguments for the existence of God. Adler himself came to faith from agnositicism in his 80's before his recent death at the age of 98. Even so, the book is more of an invitation than an argument. It is best approached as a string of pearls, a series of thoughtful but isolated studies, rather than an essay in how to approach life or a true philosophical treatise. Refer to the Synopticon the academic treatment. But Adler never wrote just for academics. He believed philosphy is for everyone, and this book proves it. Now that Mortimer Adler has recently passed away, How To Think About The Great Ideas will remain as his exortation for all of us to lead thoughful lives.

A few thousand people in the San Francisco Bay Area were fortunate to have experienced something extraordinary in 1953 and 1954. Over 52 weeks, for 30 minutes each week, Mortimer Adler discussed the Great Ideas on live television, usually with a fellow named Lloyd Luckman. Because of the format, the shows took the form of conversations. This book is a finely edited transcript of those conversations, and they are definitely worth reading. The title perhaps presumes that people know how to think, and offers to guide them in applying that skill to the Great Ideas. Using that hook, even readers who don't think they can think will soon be thinking, and will be glad for it. Think, for instance, about Adler's statement "...adults are more educable than children, just as children are more trainable than adults." Hmmm... then why do we send children to school instead of adults? Adler gives the answer: so they can learn how to learn. I like books that help me think better, and this one does. The focus for thinking in this book is the Great Ideas, a great idea that Dr. Adler (along with Robert M. Hutchins, who became President of the University of Chicago at age 29!) brought to life in the Great Books of the Western World (1952). Not all of the Great Ideas are discussed in this book - only 22 of the original 102 (Equality was added later) are addressed here, though some are discussed over several chapters. That is certainly a step up from "Six Great Ideas" (1981), and it is complete enough, well spoken enough, and well edited enough that any reader will be very well rewarded. The book does not need to be read front to back, and in fact you might want to read the chapter on How to Read a Book before you read any of the rest.I suspect, however, that most will do as I did - flip through and find a chapter or section that seems particularly appealing (How to Think about Beauty; How to Think about Work; How to Think about Punishment) and start there.Of course all this is my opinion, and Adler says that "Opinion is of the greatest importance today in business and in industry." My hope is that this one is helpful to you.

Review

"Mr. Wilson has done an excellent job of explaining the complexities and challenges associated with land boundaries and the related art and science of land surveying. His thoughtful inclusion of pertinent case law follows a logical pattern and his ability to extract key points, is a talent and a lost art. This book should be mandatory reading for all surveyors and anyone dependent on land surveyors such as attorneys, engineers, title authorities, governmental agencies, and state testing authorities." ― Michael Pallamary, The American Surveyor Magazine, Frederick, Maryland, USA "Don Wilson is one of the most respected professional surveyors in the United States. His well-researched book Boundary Retracement: Processes and Procedures is a valuable contribution to the knowledge base of boundary retracement and a tremendous new resource for the surveying profession." ― Gary R. Kent, The Schneider Corporation, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA "Mr. Wilson’s latest work will be a major new resource for land use professionals. The age-old concept of ‘original footsteps’ is linked to detailed analysis of the many methods by which they may be established. Original survey procedures and principles are considered along with best practices for retracement. This volume also includes in-depth discussion of the various elements found in property descriptions or on survey maps. Mr. Wilson includes strategies for evaluating written title documents, and legitimate methods of resolving overlaps or inconsistencies in the written record." ― Kristopher M. Kline, 2Point, Inc., Alexander, North Carolina, USA "Don Wilson, in his customary manner, has tackled a fundamental tenant of our land surveying profession with keen understanding and exemplary explanation. Beginning surveyors, experienced surveyors, attorneys and title experts will be enlightened and further educated as they read and ponder the advice, and case law supported examples, presented in this latest writing by Don. This textbook is a welcome addition to our land surveying library of references and a must have for all land surveyors." ― John "Steve" Parrish, PLS, CFedS, Sparks, Nevada, USA

The Moon Handbooks guide for Glacier National Parks was one of just a few books I could find when searching for help planning a recent trip there. While there may not be many options, it turns out that none were needed because everything I needed was right here. The book begins by briefly introducing the geographic areas of the park, and then offers a few sample itineraries. Once the preliminaries are out of the way, the author proceeds to get down to the real detail of exploring each geographic region in detail. A guide to exploring the sights, recreation options, accommodations, and food are included for each region. The book closes with some more basic information like the best ways to get to Glacier and some history of the area.I found the information in the guide to be helpful, accurate, and fairly complete. It's description of the two hotels I stayed in were spot on for both the positives and negatives. We didn't spend a lot of time in restaurants on the trip but from what I saw this part was also accurate. About the only flaw with the book is that it is printed and obviously can't be constantly updated. When I arrived at Glacier, I learned that a large section of Going-to-the-sun road was closed for the next several weeks and this included the Logan Pass area. I say this not to blame the guide but to encourage people to check with the park rangers in advance to see if there are any road closures that might affect your desire to go.This book is a definite keeper for those planning a trip to Glacier National Park. It also contains information on Waterton for those interested in making the drive up to the Canadian side (and I would encourage readers to do it if at all possible). It's writing is concise and clear, and the information is complete and accurate.

The content is good for figuring out what you want to do while visiting the park. I only had 2 issues with it:1) being a digital book, I found it hard to "flip" through as I normally would a travel guide. I was able to mitigate some of that with bookmarks, highlighting and note-taking, but that doesn't completely compensate for the lack of physical pages. This also makes it simultaneously easier to CARRY with you but harder to USE when "out there" trying to re-plan a day that just got uprooted.2) The description of the Grinnell Glacier trail was woefully inadequate. It failed to mention the likelihood (which is VERY high) that you won't be able to complete the journey (except for maybe 2 weeks out of the year) due to snow covering the trail that is already treacherous in places.

I got this guide on Kindle and it is horrible. There is no index, so you can't look up specific trails or hikes that you really want to go on. The Table of Contents is very high-level, so you can go to a general area of the book, but after that you have to flip page after page to get to what you want to read - either for hikes or lodging or food. It was really frustrating. Not recommended at all.The guidebook itself is very accurate on the hikes and trails. There is so much breathtaking scenery in this park!

I have another moon guide for Washington/Oregon camping and it's my bible. After deciding on a trip to Glacier National Park, I knew I couldn't go wrong with this guide book. It is just as good, and it will be my bible for Glacier. It's broken up by section of the park and gives details on everything you might want from things to do and see, hikes, tours, shuttles, places to eat and where to stay, and so much more. I'd been having a hard time finding campgrounds in the area, but the first time I picked up the book after it arrived I found where we wanted to stay... highly recommended!

We kept this guide in our car and referenced it often. We found the restaurant reviews to be helpful in deciding where to eat and generally accurate in describing what to expect. We found that when the guide described the menu rather than the hours of the restaurant, then this was the place to choose.Due to crowds, we found that we had to occasionally change our plans for the day. If one location was too crowded to park, we just pulled out the guide to find out what else was nearby. The descriptions of the trails was very helpful especially since we aren't in good shape and needed to be sure that we didn't choose a trail that was too difficult or too long.

This book was the only book we could find that was a comprehensive travel guide to Glacier National Park. It was very user friendly and had the sections of the park easily organized. The restaurants and attractions that were given a "moon" or a must see rating, were spot on. We found the information succinct and helpful and it helped us plan both our days and nights. Almost everything we needed to know was in this book. However, it did lack information on some of the smaller hikes which we were able to find in the park paper, and it had almost no information or pictures of the flora and fauna in the area, which made it frustrating when we saw something and didn't have a way to know what it was. The park papers didn't have that either! This book was invaluable to a first time traveller to the area and I highly recommend it.

This book saved me so much time and money. The author really knows all about Glacier and it's surrounding area. She directed to me to wonderful accommodations and activities I normally wouldn't have checked out. The author even pointed out a close airport that saved me 1 whole day of travel time. The information is very well organized by area, organized by most popular, and even by 'see it in 1 day'. If there is one draw back, there is very little about Browning and the Blackfeet Nation. But for all else, you can't go wrong with this book-highly recommended.

This book is definitely worth buying multiple copies. I have purchased four (so far) to give to fellow educators wanting a great resource for incorporating sketchnoting into their classrooms. This book is IT! It has just enough regarding "what is sketchnoting" with a focus on specific activities to use in the classroom. What I really love is that each of the activities can easily be embellished by creative educators to apply to specific subject standards. So, don't only get one copy of this book for yourself. Buy more and give them as gifts or door prizes.

Really enjoying this book!

I heard about this book literally days before its release at a tech conference in Georgia. I managed to talk our Director of Instructional Technology into purchasing it for our department (as a reference book about sketchnoting). When it came in we were all a little surprised at the size (for the price). It is a small cute square paperback. I took it home over Thanksgiving break and read it cover to cover . This made me rethink the small size comment we all made because had it been any "text'ier", "longer", or "bigger" I probably would have never read it...it would have sat on my shelf like so many other books...I know because I purchased another Sketchnote book which was more substantial in size but overwhelming to read...so I've only looked at the pictures of that one.I LOVED Sylvia's book!!!. It was easy to read and follow and built upon a session I took at the Georgia Conference on sketchnoting. There were so many links to digital resources and great ideas that I definitely feel we got our money's worth out of this "small" reference book. I have it so marked up with notes and page turn downs that we may need to buy another "clean version" for our department's reference library (I am an instructional technology coach in our district).I had already approached a media specialist into doing a four week sketchnoting collaborative project with 5th graders at a school (based on the session I took at the Georgia conference) and this book provided some really practical tips and tricks for the development of our four week project. If you are on the fence about the size or price or purchase don't be! It is a TOP QUALITY resource (and in fact I would say the main "Go To" resource for teachers, media specialists, and instructional coaches looking to introduce sketchnoting in the classroom).Eve @atechcoachlife

As an educator in her 19th year teaching I decided to try sketchnoting for the first time this year. I used to notice students doodling during the day or during student presentations. Using their own strengths I wanted students to doodle what they were learning. When looking for a structure to teach them I came across the work of Sylvia Duckworth. Her book clearly outlines the purpose and rationale for how to integrate sketchnoting into our daily lives no matter how old we are. For someone who does not consider herself an artist this book was a perfect way to organize lessons with manageable time frames for students to become skethnoters themselves. Using this book along with online resources provided we are off and running. Students are also devouring it. This is a fabulous book for any educator or business library!

I have been a fan of Sylvia Duckworth's wonderful sketchnotes and have watched her skills and style as a visual notetaker in the world of education develop over the past years. This book shares a wealth of information with hints on how to create your own sketchnotes. I love the practical examples of how to draw simply and effectively. The book also has lovely examples of how to make decorative fonts and an icon database to help you when you get stuck for ideas. It also includes QR codes that link helpful videos. My students have been enjoying using the book for ideas as they sketchnote, too! This book is an essential reference for sketchnoters!

Have you heard about Sketchnoting and are wondering how to begin.....then you NEED this book! Sylvia breaks down the basics of visual note-taking in an easy to use format for all ages and abilities. This book has been my go-to working with my kindergarten class. They LOVE using visual-note taking/Sketchnoting to "show what they know".

This is an awesome book. Sylvia Duckworth does a phenomenal job teaching the basics of sketchnoting. This book is a great resource to have!

Sketch notes are so fun! Sylvia’s book is fantastic! Loved her webinars & YouTube videos that she launched for this book!

Dr. Schut's book is an excellent one that I can easily say that when I got to the end, I was rather surprised. I hadn't been keeping that much track. This is the kind of book I wish I had had when I was in high school and dealing with issues of doubt and such. I have seen enough damage done by people who are critical of the medium of video games but have not engaged with it.For my part, I am going to turn 37 later this year and yet I still consider myself a gamer. My favorite kinds of games are RPGs. I am still bothered that I have not got to play Breath of the Wild. Final Fantasy is another favorite series of mine and it's my wife's hope that somehow we can save up enough money or find someone generous so that we can get a Nintendo Switch so she can play the new Pokemon games.Like me, Schut is also a gamer. He has seriously wrestled with the arguments on both sides. His favorite games seem to be ones like Red Dead Redemption and Civilization. He also does not deny at all that he is thoroughly committed to Jesus. So what does he say about the games?Schut does say we need to listen to criticisms. Take time to pay attention to what is being said. At the same time, we should be hoping for critical evaluation and not self-righteous evaluation. Also, we are living in an age where games are more and more common, including games on our IPhones and Kindles and such. Many people who would likely never play a video game have no problem playing something like Words With Friends for instance. There's also games that are popular such as Candy Crush which has now become a gameshow, and Angry Birds, which has had its own movie. He also speaks out against our attempts to Christianize everything. Something is not automatically Christian because it mentions Jesus. Many of us would say the Chronicles of Narnia are Christian, which indeed they are, but you will not find Jesus explicitly mentioned anywhere in them. Our Christian material is usually preachy and we're very good at reaching ourselves, but not everyone else.We also have to pay attention to what kind of medium a video game is. One noted difference is that it is interactive. No matter how many times you read The Lord of the Rings nothing new will happen. The story will be the same. No matter how many times you watch the movie, nothing new will happen. Every time you play the game, something different will happen. Of course, there can often be some overriding parameters set for you by the designers of the game, but you have great freedom and influence on the story. No two playings will be the same.He also does get into the topic of a demonic scare. I was pleased to hear like me, he had a great interest in Dungeons and Dragons as well as Magic: The Gathering. For me, in high school, my friends and I didn't care for the school lunch at all, so rather than have lunch, we'd go to the library and play Magic all afternoon together.Unfortunately, too many people have brought into scare stories about such things. Consider the Pulling Report for instance. People who latch onto this do a disservice to those who play the games. Most people who are playing these games are for the most part the same as any other interest. It's sadly the few that no doubt have other issues going on beforehand that are emphasized. This naturally gets us into the question of violence in video games. Schut doesn't shy away from this one, though he does say each person needs to evaluate this for themselves as well. It could be that part of our world is we live in a fallen world and sometimes violence could be what needs to be done. One aspect of this I was considering is that if I'm playing a game like Final Fantasy, one could consider reasoning with a human being, but if a hungry carnivorous creature is coming after me, reason will not work.Another issue is game addiction. Games do have a tendency to draw us in, reward our achievements, and make us want to do more. There will be a little bit more on this later, but let's discuss how it relates to addiction. Can some people get addicted? Yes. Still, there is no proven condition like this. Many people do learn to manage their time well. The question is not what do you do, but what do you not do? He also says a temporary obsession is okay. When Breath of the Wild came out, many of my friends were indeed engrossed in that for awhile. (And I hate them for it in a loving Christian way.)What about sexuality in video games? It is only in the world of video games that a woman can go into battle wearing pretty much a bikini and count that as armor. Video games are usually a world dominated by men, but there are plenty of female gamers. (My wife is playing Pokemon as we speak.) The representation on the other hand can be quite different. Women are usually eye candy. There are some exceptions, such as Samus Aran, but we only need think of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider and the obsession with some people on finding a nude code for her.Now to what I said there would be more on later when talking about addiction. What about education? Video games could be a great source of education. For instance, when I studied Greek in Bible College, we used a program called Parson's Greek Tutor. I would like very much to get my hands on this again as the interactive format made it much easier for me to learn the material and at the time, I was moving ahead of the class even. Every round was a game and I wanted to get perfect and would settle for nothing less which made sure I learned the material very well. As one working on learning the language now, I look back and wish I still had that.Video games can be used in such a way for us today. There is something real in the concept of edutainment. Ask a gamer about the information they need in a game and many times they will know it because they have to know it to play well. It is practical knowledge for them. But what about concerns about the digital age killing our minds? To some extent, this is true. To another extent, the digital age is here to stay and we have to do the most with it that we can. Every new medium brings with it changes. The print medium brought changes as does the internet medium and the video game medium. It's easy to strike at the medium instead of the human sinful tendency.Schut also has a section on Christians in the video game industry. Many of these are dedicated people and want to do the best they can. They see their work as an act of service to God in trying to make the best game possible. There are few explicitly Christian video games, and this could be a good thing as sadly, many of those are just awful and only reach those of us who are already Christians. Abandoning the industry will only do for that what it does for Hollywood. We need Christians in every field being salt and light. No discussion would be complete without the social aspects. I remember years ago getting together with my brother-in-law and some of his friends. No doubt, I was the youngest one there, but we spent all of one afternoon playing Goldeneye together. In Charlotte, I would get together with some friends every Sunday night. After some time playing Super Smash Brothers Brawl we would go bowling. When it came time for my bachelor party, all we did was bring the Wii over to a guy's apartment complex who had a big screen and played Smash Brothers all night long together.Games have had a way of bringing people together and uniting them. Gaming conventions are places where people can very often be themselves and form friendships easily. It could be that the gamer today is no longer the single guy sitting in his mother's basement. If you're a gamer, you owe it to yourself to read Schut's book. It is a gripping looking at a neglected medium and one that we need more of. I appreciate that he sent me a copy for review purposes and I look very much forward to interviewing him on my podcast about this.In Christ,Nick PetersDeeper Waters Apologetics

For those new to critical writing about the medium of video games, Kevin Schut's book provides a very nice introduction that any adult reader will find accessible. He recognizes the challenge of writing about video games for both outsiders, avid gamers, and everyone in between, and he strikes a good balance throughout. As someone who plays a lot of video games and tends to stay up to date on the games industry there were very few times I felt Dr. Shut "dumbing down" for the sake of those who don't know games as well. Rather, I was often surprised and pleased with his thoughtful and fair discussion of the issues of violence, game addiction, fantasy and "escape", and the purposes of video games and those who make them. I was confronted with some new ideas from time to time, but more often I came face to face with ideas I as a Christian gamer consider often, but never had never seen so eloquently stated, deeply-explored, or well-supported as in this book. For Christians who love video games this book is an important one, but a lot of the most valuable insights for me would likely be valuable for people of any faith persuasion. His concise summary of the state of the games industry and the ways it is changing in chapter 8 is one example. Another that comes to mind is his treatment of the important question: What do my actions in video games mean for me in real life? This book was entertaining as well as educational, and it brought me as a Christian gamer to a deeper appreciation for the medium I love, reminded me why games move me, and how asked me to consider how I can better follow Christ in my own life.

Perhaps a book written by a Christian about games, but hardly any scripture used at all in light of Schut's views. Already states in the preface that he will lean towards being for gaming, rather than the argument against. Understandable and made okay cases. However, a lot of what was said about God and relationship, etc, was very skeptical and a little skewed to me. I am someone who enjoys games once in a blue moon if I'm bored, but honestly, this book did not really help enlighten such ideas of games being good, especially if you are a follower of Christ in His fullness.I wouldn't really recommend. Maybe buy a used one, but it didn't give much insight if you're a gamer or play games. Doesn't give good theological evidence. At all. Just more info. Okay book.

I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about how games are an effective media, from the Christian perspective. I was super excited when I got this book, and I carry it with me everywhere because it is such a good read. This book is worth every penny! I love that he covers Christian games as well as secular games. I also liked that this book just came out this year, so the information is very current. From reading some of the other reviews before I bought it, I knew that he was very careful to be balanced, which is great, but I was also glad to see that he gives his opinion as well as sharing both sides of information so that you can make your own decision. There is a lot of solid information in this book, and I know it will be a great reference for me to have forever!

Michael Corradino breathes new life and effectiveness into healing patients with electroacupuncture. Dr. Corradino provides real and clear teachings based in his own research and clinical practice to benefit both the Eastern and Western physician. Stay ahead of the game - read this book. Wonderful book - a must have if you do estim. Clear explainations of neurology allowing you to extend your understanding of acupuncture. Great evidence based treatment protocols.

Gives us a scientific explanation of why acupuncture works. Teaches a vocabular that doctors and other healthcare practioners can understand and relate to. The principles can be applied to any issues I see in my practice, not only pain, but emotional, and internal medical. A must have and understand text for anyone practicing acupuncture in the 21st century.

I wish more acupuncture books were written like this one. The topic is focused, in this case on a electro stimulation acupuncture (EA), covering both theory and practice with the right amount of examples and treatment patterns. The author covers the anatomy of the main branches of the nervous system showing how distal points and local points align with both western medical understanding and eastern medical treatments of diseases using acupuncture. The description of the type of nerve endings and how to they can and should be stimulated (frequencies and milli/micro-currents) to get the desired results is by far what makes this book most useful. There is a little redundant information in the book, but probably this is well placed for future reference rather than reading. While this book is geared to those use EA in their clinic, I think it would be useful to any acupuncturist to help in understanding the efficacy needling techniques.

Excellent anatomy illustrations.

Clear and consice

Great book, lots of great info relevant for Licensed Acupuncturist!

Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression, by Mildred Armstrong Kalish

From Publishers Weekly

Kalish's memoir of her Iowa childhood, set against the backdrop of the Depression, captures a vanished way of traditional living and a specific moment in American history in a story both illuminating and memorable. Kalish lived with her siblings, mother and grandparents-seven in all-both in a town home and, in warmer weather, out on a farm. The lifestyle was frugal in the extreme: "The only things my grandparents spent money on were tea, coffee, sugar, salt, white flour, cloth and kerosene." But in spite of the austere conditions, Kalish's memories are mostly happy ones: keeping the farm and home going, caring for animals, cooking elaborate multi-course meals and washing the large family's laundry once a week, by hand. Here, too, are stories of gossiping in the kitchen, digging a hole to China with the "Big Kids" and making head cheese at butchering time. Kalish skillfully rises above bitterness and sentiment, giving her memoir a clear-eyed narrative voice that puts to fine use a lifetime of careful observation: "Observing the abundance of life around us was just so naturally a part of our days on the farm that it became a habit." Simple, detailed and honest, this is a refreshing and informative read for anyone interested in the struggles of average Americans in the thick of the Great Depression. From Bookmarks Magazine

One of the most endearing qualities of octogenarian Mildred Armstrong KalishÂ’s Little Heathens is that it runs counter to what the memoir, sadly, has too frequently become—self-indulgent, self-promoting gossip. Despite circumstances that could easily have left her embittered, Kalish, a retired English professor, recalls her formative years fondly. Through simple, honest prose punctuated with "her old pagan rhythms" (New York Times Book Review) and a host of memorable examples, Kalish performs her greatest feat, which is to make some of us under 80 just the slightest bit envious—crazy to say, but such is human nature—that we never experienced the Depression-era challenges and triumphs so lovingly recounted.Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc.

I could peripherally identify enough with this author's experience having spent the first 10 years of my life on farms in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in the 50's. Twenty years later than the time period of this book, but we were very poor. I was in second grade when my parents, four older brothers and I left Pennsylvania for a series of rented farms in Wisconsin, some without electricity or indoor plumbing. Winters with frost on our bedroom walls, hot stones at our feet and quilts piled so heavily we could hardly turn over. To this day I need a cold room to sleep properly. So many of the values she speaks of in this book were also taught to me. This book kept my interest all the way through. Highly recommended.

An amazing book! A memoir, plainly told, of a farm childhood in a small Midwestern town. The details of everyday life were in part a revelation and in part a reminder of stories my grandmother had told me. The current generation of young people should read this book to get a clue about past generations.Older generations should read this book to remember the treats and travails of a much more difficult life. Mildred Kalish is a keen observer and an expert writer. Never self-pitying,never cute, never condescending, never sentimental, always clear, her balanced prose opens a door to yesterday. This book is a treasure!

My childhood, also rural, was not as harsh as Mildred's and was without the disruption of half year in town and half on the farm. Helping with the vegetable garden, laundry, 4 H animals, sewing, cooking, baking, canning and church activities were all similar. We lacked cousins in the area, for my Dad`s sisters had settled in other parts of the country after college and my Mom was an only child from Iowa who met, fell in lve with Dad during college and married after a year of teaching. Our hands must not be idle, for the devil awaited such opportunities! Reading was a treat and a joy! Mildred yearned for cottonlike Wonder Bread like the town kids had, so did I. My brother and I, salt shaker in pocket, sat in the dirt and ate tomatoes warmed by the sun. We sang around the piano as my Mother played and accompanied us in her full, rich alto voice. We listened to war news, while Mom knit socks and sweaters for boys in the Army and Navy, suffered through rationing, feared invasion over our hills....All considerations for someone born 11 years later. I am grateful she wrote her memoir!

I come from a long line of men and women who "worked the land" and this book gave me such a great appreciation for the generations that came before me. My father and mother were teen-agers living on farms during the depression and even though they were not in Iowa, I suspect, Nebraska farming was much the same. The story is told with great humor and intelligence, candidly and without judgement. I believe that the author held her early years in high esteem, as she did the people who molded her personality during such a difficult time. It was such a pleasure reading her story that I bought multiple copies to share with family & friends that I think will appreciate the trip down memory lane.

I absolutely loved "Little Heathens". Mildred made farm life so real and so appealing. From milking cows to pot-luck dinners, I was mesmerized with the everyday events of farm life. This family had it all, not ease and luxury, but solid family life, with grandparents and parents who had good values and knew how to "grow up a family'. Times were not easy in the days of the depression, but to see how people handled life when there were no conveniences like we have today, makes one know that the conveniences we do have today have made us soft, and taken away something very important in growing up and learning how to work.

I read portions of this book to my teenage granddaughters who think that helping out in the kitchen for under half an hour is oppressive. What our past generations did at very young ages to contribute to their families lives and how early they worked in various capacities is amazing. They were know at early ages for their character and work ethic, unlike today when some hold their first job at 20 years of age. There is a great deal of ingenious information from those who made do with what was at hand. Pack this one with the "survivor" kit of duct tape and jugs of water. If it doesn't help you survive, it will surely entertain you.

I absolutely love this book! I had it in paperback but gave it to a friend. I bought it on my Kindle so I could read it again and again. It's such a fun book, serious too, but told in a manner that is sweet and caring and so down to earth. It takes the reader back to such a different world. Hard work, family values - it's all here. But there is also much humor. Very few books make me laugh out loud or laugh until I cry - this one does both. Love your story, Millie!

This book is great. My mom read it in her book club and recommended it to me. She grew up on a ranch in Montana about the same time Mildred Kalish was growing up on a farm in Iowa. Mom was struck by the great number of similarities in their lives in rural America during the 20s and 30s. Mildred is a great story teller. She gives you a realistic picture of life in those days.
