About the Author
Kathleen L. Howard is a Research Associate at the Heard Museum. She earned a Masters and PhD in History from Arizona State University. Her research interests include the history of the American Southwest and its Native cultures. Her publications include Inventing the Southwest: The Fred Harvey Company and Native American Art (with Diana Pardue, 1996), and Photographing Mesa Verde: Nordenskiold and Now (with William G. Howard and Douglas J. Hamilton, 2006). Diana F. Pardue is Curator of Collections at the Heard Museum. She received the 2009 Curatorial Excellence Award from the Apple Valley Foundation for the exhibit Mothers & Daughters: Stories in Clay. Her publications include Native American Bolo Ties: Vintage and Contemporary Artistry (with Norman Sandfield, 2011), Shared Images: The Innovative Jewelry of Yazzie Johnson and Gail Bird (2007), Contemporary Southwestern Jewelry (2007), and Inventing the Southwest: The Fred Harvey Company and Native American Art (with Kathleen Howard, 1996).

Beautifully illustrated, well researched and well written, Over the Edge is a joy to read. The authors continue the groundbreaking research they first published twenty years ago in “Inventing the Southwest: The Fred Harvey Company and American Indian Artâ€. Over the Edge covers new territory, including sections on the Indian Department in Albuquerque, Mary Colter, many of the Indians employed by the company (my favorite section is the one about Hopi employee Joe Sekakuku), and most especially the Grand Canyon. This book would be a valuable addition to libraries devoted to topics of American history, especially the Southwest.
Lots of information about the individuals within the Fred Harvey Company, the Santa Fe Railway and Native Americans of the Southwest that contributed to the creation of American's idea of the Southwest from the early decades of the 20th century through the next forty years. Much new material, at least for this reader who has a small library of materials on the Fred Harvey Company. Additionally good material on the early days of the Grand Canyon and some of the conflicts with early European inhabitants and the Santa Fe and Fred Harvey companies. Very interesting book for Fred Harvey and Santa Fe fans and those interested in the histories of our national parks.
His successful efforts helped to keep it from becoming yet another water source for Arizona & Southern California. This book is a great way to find out how his efforts to bring tourists to appreciate the Grand Canyon came about.
Excellent addition to my collection of books on the Fred Harvey Company and the Southwest Indian Detours. Loved all the color illustrations!
