My limited experience with digital photography has been with point and shoot cameras. In my teens, however, I really enjoyed photography as a hobby and had several analog cameras. I just never made the jump to DSLR, forgot everything I knew and have been feeling out of touch.I bought my first real DSLR camera and needed some serious help to get up to speed with operation and terminology. This book was exactly what I needed and got me up and running very quickly. From shutter speed to lenses and filters, I feel that a lot is covered here and the fact that the author uses a lot of images in the book for illustration is helpful as well. Great resource!

This book is a great resource for those who are beginning their learning curve in DSLR or digital photography in general. It is also a great read for those of us who needed a “refresher course” or clarification of photographic terminology. It covers the three main topics associated with taking a good photograph including F-stop (aperture settings), shutter speed, and ISO ratings and how these three variables affect the final outcome of a photographic image. Understanding these variables allows the photographer to plan ahead, create a desired outcome, and feel in control of their camera. His discussions on filters, types of lenses, lighting, framing, focusing, and composition help the reader learn how to achieve a professional quality image. Black also touches on the various formats available when storing, editing, and transmitting photographic files along with some basics on photo-editing programs. I found it very easy to understand. I liked the various what I would call “tricks-of-the-trade” passages that were thrown in to help the photographer to begin to explore the idea of creating special effects. I also appreciated his explanation of focal length which I previously did not understand too well. This book clarifies, what can sometimes be an intimidating field of knowledge, the aspects of digital photography and puts you in the driver’s seat for your journey in creating quality DSLR images. Highly recommend for beginners and as a resource for a refreshment course on the various aspects of photography.

Books on photography are often a boring maze of F-Stops, Appeture sizes and shutter speeds. I have read many books for folks like me new to Digital Photography. I am a computer nerd so I did not need to learn how to move my pictures from camera to computer for post production editing. However the introduction to the mechanisms needed to control how the little sensor experiences the light needed to capture a great picture was something I needed to learn. This book explained the TRIAD of appeture, shutter speed and ISO to a degree that I finally understood it as an equation. Each part of the photographers triad unleashes certain effects that if accessed correctlymake for great pictures. But like any equation the photography triad carries with it certain demons if shutter, appiture or ISO is pushed too far. This is NOT an exhaustive book that will make you a master photographer overnight. The book encourages new photographers to venture beyond the confines of AF = Auto Focus and play with the settings. The book is very liberating as it tells new photographers go out risk making mistakes as you learn the limits and trade offs imposed by appeture, iso and shutter speed in various environments. Photography should be fun because; you use your imagination to create the shot. Sure the world is filled with many things most of them mundane and ordinary. However your camera can use light, angle shade, contrast, saturation, exposure and more to redine the world as we know it.Photography allows us to employ the camera to reshape our perceptions of the simplest things. A door lock for example is something we see every day. However with a macro lens, the right exposure and some creative angles or lighting a simple lock can take on a whole new life as art. I am still a new wet behind the ears picture taker, I am not anywhere near good enough yet to call myself a photographer. I'm barely past the all auto focus all the time stage. The author of DSLR Photography for Beginners LOVES photography and wants to infect this readers with the joy that comes from engaging in the photographic arts as a hobby or an eventual profession. The writer of DSLR Photography for Beginners is more than just a photography book for beginners that outline the parts of the camera and what they do. DSLR Photography for Beginners shares the joy of taking pictures. The author of DSLR Photography for Beginners loves photography and it shows in the passionate way he teaches the subject in this book I'm a computer analyst and I LOVE computers. I still get that Christmas morning joy just starting up a new computer and getting it ready for its tasks. This Brain Black guy who wrote DSLR Photography for Beginners loves photography and for him taking pictures is like Christmas morning joy for him. I learn best from people who LOVE WHAT THEY TEACH WITH A PASSION! I read many Kindle books about photography and they were all informative. It took reading DSLR Photography for Beginnersto make me find the passion to start experimenting with my camera settings, going out and capturing images with almost child like reckless abandon. Heck many of my shots were terrible but a few shots were really awesome well composed and well lit. Best of all I enjoyed creating my pictures even the bad ones. Rather than delet my bad pictures I am keeping them so when I am finally good I can see how far I've come.DSLR Photography for Beginners does more than just teach you about your DSLR it awakens the passion of photography in you if you let it and for $3.99 thats a small price to pay for such a heaping helping of artistic joy!

Bought this book as a gift for a cousin. The book explains the basics well. The example images in the book are all black and white which is very misleading looking at front cover. The writer/seller/amazon should explicitly mention this up front.

To say this book is a real value is an understatement. I would have paid double the cost for this book and still been pleased with the information gained. The book is nicely laid out so you are walked through step by step and not overwhelmed with a lot of information all at once. Instead you read perfectly sized chapters and the author provides great examples using color photos.I think the addition of the color photos was what sold me the most on this book. You are able to look at the photo and fully understand the process the author is describing. If you are planning on buying a digital SLR camera or giving one as a gift- this book is THE companion guide for no stress, fast understanding and a fast start to taking great photos.

The first book that I read by the very peripatetic Dervla Murphy was In Ethiopia with a Mule. It is an account of her 1000-mile trip across the highlands of Ethiopia, in 1967, solo, save for the mule which carried her belonging. For many of us, that would have been THE impressive idiosyncratic achievement of a lifetime. Not so for Ms. Murphy, who sees an obscure place on the globe, and has to go there, and savor it, usually via unconventional means. I gave the Ethiopia book only a 4-star review, since I was annoyed that throughout the long journey she was incapable of loading her own mule, and always had to rely on the "kindness of strangers." That flaw in her travel mode was not present in this book... in fact, she seemed to "double down" in terms of challenges... at the age of 51, in 1983, instead of being accompanied by a mule, it was her (beloved) 14 year old daughter! Ah, that all teenagers might have such an experience.Just the first chapter, an excellent history of the island, is worth the purchase price. It was the largest fertile area of the world that was uninhabited until the arrival of Malayo-Polynesian groups around 900 AD. Various African groups came thereafter. Then the Portuguese showed up in 1500, and then the English and the French showed tepid interest for a few centuries. Only well into the 19th century did the London Missionary Society get serious in sending missionaries, who are often the advance wave of colonists, as all too many colonized have learned. In 1896 Madagascar officially became a French colony, which was its status until independence in 1960. The human settlement and interactions there have been historically unique, but what truly sets the island off, in terms of uniqueness, is its flora and fauna, with numerous species found only there, and nowhere else in the world.Murphy wrangled a visa, and an all-important "permission letter" of the "to whom it may concern" variety from the embassy in Paris. She and her daughter flew there the cheap way - via Aeroflot and Moscow, arriving in the capital, Antananarivo, mercifully called "Tana." The newly independent government's push for autarky means that few things work well; and many things don't work at all. Imports are virtually non-existent. And in particular, for a traveler, the roads are abysmal; in some cases they are passable only on foot. And for sure, the buses don't run on that very alien concept: "time." Rather, they run when they are full... and don't break down.In what seemed to be a couple of months, they covered a large part of the southern two-thirds of the island. The central highlands are the most populous, and the town of Antsirabe (the "Vichy," that is, the spas and mineral springs, of Madagascar) seems to be the most viable and enjoyable. They went to the western coastal town of Tulear, but stopped to see the lemurs on the way, in the Parc National d'Isalo. Due to the lack of accommodation, they camped there. They checked the guest book, and there was only one page of names spanning a decade. (I checked on the internet, and there is now a very nice looking lodge there.) One of the "gutsy" (or crazy?) things they did was camp in the wild on several occasions. From Tulear they had another epic journey by vehicle, spanning days, across the southern part of the island, to Fort Dauphin. And then it was back to Tana, and beyond to the coast, with broken vehicles along the way, and a fairly vigorous hike at the end.Murphy is a keen observer of all, and has strong descriptive powers. She also carries a fair load of erudition, and weaves it into her account. The people, though poor, and in a daily struggle for so much that the "civilized" west takes for granted, seem to be happier, and certainly kinder to the stranger that she and her daughter are. Yet, and Murphy specifically makes this point, the island is no Rousseau fantasy. There is evil and unhappiness there also. She has been criticized for being too "new age." I didn't see that in particular, but I did feel she was a bit reckless in the treatment of her own health, particularly after being cut with a knife. In terms of her observations, I've marked many a passage, one of the best being: "The distortion of human relationships, rather than the building of Holiday Inns or the sprouting of souvenir stalls, is the single most damaging consequence of Third World tourism." Murphy also quoted extensively from Dr. Alison Jolly's naturalist work A World Like Our Own: Man and Nature in Madagascar, which is a book I've owned for 30 years, and have yet to read. Murphy's push will finally remedy that deficiency. Overall, 5-stars.

Excellent book, and this month's choice for our book club. We meet in the local library one day a week, and over half of the group is composed of retired teachers so we are all very well read, but the Malagasy language does give us some problems. We have found it almost impossible to even begin to pronounce most of the native words which Ms. Murphy has to use to describe her experiences. Nevertheless, other than creating breaks and causing a lot of laughter, that doesn't detract from the excellence of her (and her daughter's) adventure. On a more personal note, when I first read the book several years ago it pushed me toward reading the adventures of Sir Richard Burton, and then I spent over a year reading everything I could find related to the search for the source of the Nile. I love it when reading a single great book becomes the start of an extended adventure.

Having traveled through Madagascar recently, I found Murphy's book spot-on. Her own journey, undertaken some thirty years ago, still accurately captures the spirit of the Big Red Island. Yes -- much has changed, yet in many respects, the country away from its few paved roads remains unchangeable. The south retains its spirit of timeless isolation. Rice cultivation dominates the central highlands. The west and east contrast with each other in every conceivable respect. Those acute shortages described by Murphy in such detail seem to be a matter of the past; a traveler in today's Madagascar is not at risk of starving, and hunger like that in neighboring Africa hasn't afflicted the country to a similar extent, but for ordinary Malagasy, life continues to be a struggle. Education, medical care, security -- none of these have changed so markedly over the last three decades as to make Murphy's novel a tale of the bygone past.Few travel writers have such an innate ability to go beyond the obvious -- after all, there are many books on Madagascar, and even more in French, but I found few (if any) that capture the essence of the country as well as Murphy. Madagascar is sometimes baffling and often inexplicable. Much of its richness lies underneath its surface: tradition remains a powerful force not just in far-flung villages. The Malagasy temperament, the joye de vivre of its people, the good natured rambunctiousness of their children even after being stuffed into a bursting taxi brousse for 24-hours, the graciousness of strangers -- none of it is easy to describe, yet Murphy does so unerringly."Muddling Through Madagascar" isn't just a story of a long-ago trip through an exotic country; the human element that Murphy evokes, puts the books in the same league as the writings of Paul Theroux or Bruce Chatwin or Peter Matthiessen. It's an inspired, timeless piece of travel non-fiction. As interesting as it is for anybody lucky-enough to have spent time in Madagascar, it is also a remarkable book for the armchair traveler, vividly bringing the world that's Out There into the living room. The experience of traveling, going "there" from "here," all its trials and tribulations, as well as the more obvious rewards, makes for genuinely inspired reading. Today's trend calls for travel writing that's virtually indistinguishable from travel-brochure copy: fluff having replaced substance. Murphy's book takes us back to a time when this wasn't at all the case: her experience is genuine, as is her book, which is precisely what makes it so enjoyable to read.

Book is a little dated, but overall very interesting in telling about Madagascar.

This book was recommended by a world travelers book. Because it was available on kindle, I purchased it. So glad I did! While I expect Madagascar to have changed a bit since the writing, I'm familiar enough with African culture to know it won't have changed too much. I am prepared and looking forward to my own Madagascar exploration!

I enjoyed this book because after visiting Madagascar and returning 5 times it is the most accurate book about what it is really like to be a guest in this beautiful country. I appreaciated the authors respect for the Malagasy people that I have come to love and admire. This is a great treatise in cross-cultural adaptation, wandering through a culture in which you have no clue what the rules and values are about.

Always enjoy Dervla Murphy.

#67,930 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

It's odd to read a book expecting to dislike it. But such was the case with Magic Bites, the first installment in a reportedly fantastic Urban Fantasy series. Ever since I inhaled the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning in a week last summer, I've been searching for a new Urban Fantasy obsession. Although it's not a normal genre for me, when it's good, it's good. And apparently, once you reach the third book in this series, it's good.Magic Bites, however? Not good nor even good. It's pretty bad. But I hope it's bad in a way that doesn't bode poorly for the rest of the series. My concerns:1. snappy dialogue: Kate appears to follow in the tradition of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She is always ready for danger, armed with both a sword and a comeback. The comebacks were grating. They are laughable but they don't make me laugh, if you can discern the distinction. I think they were supposed to show that Kate is spunky, a tough girl who doesn't put up with crap. But I don't think most tough girls would react with dialogue seemingly written by a low-level sitcom writer.2. lack of overarching plot: I've realized that my obsession with the Fever Series derived from its careful plotting. Each book built off the previous book so that by the time we reached the final book, I probably ripped some pages as I tore through it, desperate to solve long developed mysteries. Sadly, there doesn't appear to be a long-term game at play here.3. overly descriptive writing: I don't read Urban Fantasy for writing. I just don't. As long as the prose is readable, it's fine with me. As I said before, I'm here for crazy plots and interesting characters. The writing isn't bad here. Ironically, the problem is that the writing tries to be good. Scenes are bogged down by long sentences describing the scenery of the room. No no no. I just want the action please! It's the same annoyance I'd feel if the director of a straight-up action movie paused for a contemplative, minute long shot of the landscape. My bright spots:1. Kate/Curran relationship: if you remove the yucky comebacks, the conversational combat between these two characters is promising. They are both strong personalities and I predict the clashes between them as they get to know each other more will be awesomely explosive.2. Supernatural world of Atlanta: I'm into the mythology of the series. Basically, sometimes the world runs on technology, other times it runs on magic. During those magical times, bad stuff tends to happen, bad stuff Kate needs to clean up. Even the supernatural creatures are seemingly scientific--there are shapeshifters who become that way by contracting the Lycanthropic Virus.Onward, to book two, Magic Burns, hoping my bright spots grow brighter and my concerns fade to obscurity

In this stunning sequel, Kate Daniels is tasked with retrieving a set of stolen legendary maps for the Pack, finds a ragtag child with a missing witch of a mother, and must halt a disastrous war between two powerful mythical gods before the entire city of Atlanta is destroyed. Suffice to say, Kate is a busy girl and finds herself in oodles of trouble and awkward situations.BTW, did anyone else notice that MAGIC BITES refers to Pack as “shapechangers” and then from the second book on she calls them “shapeshifters?” Not that it matters or affects my enjoyment of the series, I just found it notable.WHY YOU SHOULD ADD MAGIC BURNS TO YOUR TBR LIST:--The second Kate Daniels novel introduces us to staple secondary characters Julie and Andrea. These ladies play crucial roles in the Kate Daniels series and become important people in Kate’s lives. My feelings for Andrea tend to waffle as the series goes on, but Julie continues to hold a special place in my heart.--Speaking of secondary characters… BRAN.I wish he played a larger role in the series, but alas, he only appears in MAGIC BURNS. Even so, he’s quite memorable. He’s this guy who trades his mortality for chance to play hero for his goddess and never looks back. I find myself completely smitten with the man. He’s mischievous and flirty and oh so yummy.--The Kate and Curran banter is exquisite. Curran goes a’courting and Kate is blissfully unaware, uncomfortably aroused, and irritated as hell.“You shouldn’t provoke me.” His voice dropped low. He suddenly looked slightly hungry. “You never know what I might do if I’m not fully in control of myself.”Mayday, Mayday. “I shudder at the thought.”“I usually have that effect on women.”Ha! “Is that before or after they pee on themselves and show you their furry bellies?”Snort. They’re highly amusing together. Laugh out loud funny, even. I could just eat them up.All-in-all, MAGIC BURNS packs a powerful punch as Kate cleans up magical disasters, battles it out with all sorts of undead, kicks major ass, and ventures further into the world of the shapeshifters. Kate Daniels is one of my favorite special snowflakes and I always enjoy a coming back into her world. This series is recommended to literally everyone. EVERYONE.
